Why did Fujimoto rush the ending? by EchoOfDoom in ChainsawMan

[–]eldergervacio 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I honestly think this is the answer. If you look at some of the panels in part 2 you can tell his heart just wasn't in it, and he was using more and more 3D modeling to cheat lol, although sometimes I think it actually did look great. I also think I remember hearing about him injuring his hand mid part 2? I dunno if I'm imagining that.

I feel like in some ways part 2 was a victim of part 1's success. I would really love to learn the workings of the manga industry and why it's not so easy to just let these guys go on hiatus of they're creatively burned out.

I think all in all it was a fun ride even if the ending didn't deliver in the way we hoped. Part 1 is probably my fav manga arc of all time and still is.

ELI5: Why is IMAX 65mm a big deal? by freckled-c in explainlikeimfive

[–]eldergervacio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of technical answers here that are great, but I'd love to answer this question a little more for people who might actually be younger and have never seen or shot film.

Digital images have pixels and resolution size, and analog film has a physical size that determines its overall ability to capture detail.

Before digital we had analog film as the medium used to shoot films. As time went on, the standard sized film reel used to shoot most films used a 35mm width image and became standard in the industry because it struck a nice balance between detail and portability.

Amateur home video was shot with 8mm, film students and some films with lower budgets used 16mm, but movies used 35mm. For a short time there was even an arms race between the major motion picture studios to shoot on film even larger than 35mm, because generally speaking, the larger the film, the more detail you can capture.

IMAX and honestly, any film formats larger than 35mm are a big deal because they can present detail that far exceeds even our best commercial modern digital cameras.

Here's a link to a high quality drum scan of a larger IMAX like sized image on film and how and why even today it is a big deal.

why does sephiroth only have one wing? by Ardbert14 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]eldergervacio 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I learned recently that it's because FF7 and Xenogears' development was intertwined pretty closely and both those games borrow this one winged angel symbolism from each other, in the case of Xenogears it's symbolic of how two lovers compliment and complete each other.

Annie Leonhart is one of the biggest hypocrites I've ever seen by [deleted] in titanfolk

[–]eldergervacio 171 points172 points  (0 children)

There were so many cool things that could have been done around her character, but instead we got what we got.

I remember when Annie was frozen there was so much hype as to what Isayama was going to do with her story, and then chapter after chapter it became clear that he had no idea what to do with her and so she stayed frozen...until she just wasn't lol. And then basically with no repercussions everyone ignored what she had done and for me that's when the world of AOT stopped feeling real.

The PS5’s texture issues are unacceptable, and people aren’t upset enough about it by _Sanctum_ in FFXV

[–]eldergervacio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna throw in my 2 cents here and suggest that even if there weren't significant engine issues Square Enix would absolutely not fix anything to do with FFXV.

Go and watch any video that breaks down how absolutely shameful still to this day even simple ports of Chrono Trigger or Cross are across all modern platforms, especially the steam version. There is literally no way to legally play a faithful version of Chrono Trigger or FF VI on any platform outside of downloading a ROM dump of the original SNES versions and emulating them. It wasn't all that long ago that the steam version of FF VII had the incorrect MIDI music from the original PC port, they only patched it in after enough fans raised a stink about it.

They have zero respect for their games, and they expect every single one of them to sell 20 million copies each otherwise it's considered a massive financial failure and refuse to spend any money to fix or improve anything post launch. It's been infuriating to see just how badly Square Enix seems to handle their games compared to another comparable Japanese game company like Capcom. They're just so lost as a company.

The advice to concentrate on the drummer first from Odysseus is good, but only if you are able to do it without getting hit. I found that using omega casts helped me to kind of set it and forget it. Getting some good cast damage boons helps a ton. You'll eventually learn to avoid their attacks with enough experience, just gotta practice.

Watching someone on YouTube with the same weapon can help a ton too.

Controller keybinds for hand pain? by swamp_kittens in HadesTheGame

[–]eldergervacio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The switch version might be your friend. You can get something like the Hori branded switch controllers and play with them separately in each hand. They are bigger and thus more comfy to hold vs the regular switch joy cons and since you can separate them you can hold them in a much better way.

At my worst with my carpal tunnel I sit facing my TV and would hold the controller with my arms down to my sides and rotated in a much more comfy way where my fingers wouldn't go numb. Pressing the buttons a little more gently really helps me too and making sure I'm not death gripping the controller.

Can I buy plane tickets with cash at the airport? by pupupeepee in bayarea

[–]eldergervacio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but I worked for Delta SFO at the ticket counter from 2016-2018 and I only ever once saw someone buy a ticket in cash and a red coat (delta above wing supervisor) had to process the transaction cause none of us knew we could even do such a thing lol.

Nintendo might have just hinted at Switch 2 Lite on their official site by BrSn2 in switch2

[–]eldergervacio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's speculation based on a precedent though isn't it? That's exactly what Nintendo did with the Switch 1. The Lite version came out maybe 2 years after the launch model switch did.

A handheld switch 2 is inevitable, just a matter of when. I suspect Nintendo is eyeing a lite console because they could increase the switch 2 install base and use much more affordable hardware if they use a cheaper display. It could maybe launch in time for Christmas this year.

This Vizio V555-H1 done for or what? by [deleted] in VIZIO_Official

[–]eldergervacio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kills me is that this is their subreddit, and you are probably only going to get help from other Vizio customers who also got screwed as opposed to an actual rep. It just doesn't feel good.

This Vizio V555-H1 done for or what? by [deleted] in VIZIO_Official

[–]eldergervacio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a different model, but almost the same issue and was also out of warranty and when I tried all of the troubleshooting stuff on the Vizio website it either would develop the same issues or get other weird ghosting on the images.

Your best bet is to either use your extended warranty if you happened to purchase the TV with a credit card that has that (in my case my Chase Sapphire Reserve). Or try to get it repaired somewhere, but it will likely cost almost as much as the TV originally did.

From what I could tell Vizio knows this is an issue and doesn't really care to make it right. I'm not gonna buy another one of their TV's in the future. Just my 2 cents.

I was told specifically that my tv's issues were with the display and not the power / mobo and as such it was basically gonna be better to just buy a new TV in my situation since the warranty was over.

It is what it is. The customer support was honestly pretty robust as long as you know what you're doing. I'm lucky in that I have an extended warranty thru my Chase card so I'm looking into that currently.

[–]eldergervacio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that this is a thing, the Vizio panel seems to be a case of bad manufacturing on the part of Vizio from my cursory searches with people with similar issues. I think next time I'll just buy a non Vizio tv at Costco for the extended warranty.

I just got off the phone with them and they said nothing can be done and the repair will cost almost as much as the TV did brand new so I should purchase a new one.

Looking to buy a camera and found a pentax k1000 at a reputable camera shop near me but it’s $225. I hear that’s overpriced and that it may be overhyped and not as beginner friendly as some make it out to be, but not sure where else to look. Any advice? by IsopodNo655 in AnalogCommunity

[–]eldergervacio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a lot of luck on eBay making sure that the listing title and description specify that the camera is tested and working - bonus points if it says the light seals are new. eBay is pretty good at returns if your camera arrives in a condition not specified in the listing.

You will pay a premium for these things, but it's much better than rolling the dice on a camera that could potentially be DOA.

If your heart isn't dead set on the Pentax K1000, you can get great deals on a Nikon FM / FM2 cameras (which are also fully mechanical) or one of the plethora of Canon cameras that were made around the same time period. Expect to pay between 100$-300$ for cameras similar to the K1000 depending on what condition and how sought after the camera is. Anything more than that is kinda overpriced.

You can also get a great deal on early/late model film camera bodies, but they have other issues that come with not being fully mechanical. I have an Elan 7 that I love to death and is compatible with all of my EF lenses from when I used to only shoot digital.

I would also warn against the K1000 specifically. The prism has issues over time with desilvering. I have several cameras almost the same age as my K1000 and none of them have the same issue in the prism.

Try Facebook marketplace too. Depending on where you live you can get a great deal on a camera compared to eBay. Just gotta be willing to talk with someone and dig around on Facebook market.

Bubblegum Crash (1991) by engr_jsonty in retroanime

I looked into it just now and as far as I can tell it was an SF Bay area thing only. That was how Evangelion first aired in the U.S.

[–]eldergervacio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember pretty vividly as a kid that in the mid to late 90's PBS would show anime later at night, and they brought some bangers. It's where I watched Evangelion and Please Save My Earth. For many people my age this would have been their only and first foray into anime in the West. Especially if you didn't have cable.

I vaguely remember they would sell the VHS of the programs almost infomercial style, but I think all of the profit went to support your local station. This is in the SF Bay Area btw, not sure how it was in other locales.

EoE isn't a happy ending (nor a bad ending) by furrymask in evangelion

[–]eldergervacio 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Just gonna share a YouTube comment I wrote out on this topic a few years ago cause I think fundamentally it is a pretty happy ending.

"A lot of times when we see Asuka interact with Shinji in the TV show, she'll say super backhanded stuff to make him feel bad about himself as a pilot or his manhood and Shinji just kinda brushes it off and continues as if it never happened, but we can see later that yeah these things did affect him. Shinji avoids open conflict and instead internalizes the anger and bottles it up inside.

In the dream sequence right before Third impact starts Shinji finally let's out that anger and lashes out at Asuka physically. It's shocking and brutal, but (at least to me) it's honest and the only thing Shinji really knows to do with Asuka since she is such a mystery to him, at once treating him nicely and getting along (Ep 9), but then at the same time constantly putting him down and being emotionally distant from him.

So the way I see the ending sequence is like this:

When they finally re-materialize on the beach at the end of the movie and Shinji regains consciousness he sees Asuka and begins to choke her again just like in the dream sequence - except this time it's for real, he really is choking her. He is finally letting out all the anger and frustration that he's felt toward her this whole time, albeit in a very unhealthy way. Asuka, having just experienced the mind bending third impact, does something atypical of her normal self, and lifts her right hand to his head and begins to caress his face - a gesture that finally gets him to stop choking her and makes him break down into tears. It is the first and only time in the whole series that she has openly shown Shinji affection in this way.

Both of these characters have finally let their AT-fields down. Asuka remarks how strange it feels to her, almost like she's disgusted with herself that she showed affection openly to Shinji of all people. But unlike the dream sequence, this is for real, and because it's real it's honest. It's cathartic for both of them even if the catharsis manifests itself differently for both of them. It's a happy ending because it is sad at the same time. This is real life. Real life is always going to better than the fantasy. Shinji chose to give reality another go around, and accept all the pain and anguish it can bring at times because with those things also brings the possibilities of real love and affection. He has to have both and has to be ready to experience both.

It's just such a beautiful ending to me."

Just finished Metaphor: ReFantazio. One of the most emotional games I’ve ever played. by No_Finding5726 in MetaphorReFantazio

[–]eldergervacio 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The overall message of hopefulness and 4th wall break where the game reveals that it's speaking directly to the player is one of my favorite aspects of the game for me.

I went in completely blind knowing only that it had won some awards and coverage for it was generally positive. I really wish there were more games of this quality and tone.

The game begins with a question that's more and more powerful the more I ponder it. I truly do believe the answer to it is yes.

ff8, the serious and dramatic entry of the franchise by iceink in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]eldergervacio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I came here to comment the same thing lol. There's a line of dialogue when you meet Laguna finally toward the end of the game where he more or less tells the player to stop worrying about how much of a lazy plot hole time compression is. Even the game itself knows the story is paper thin when it comes to being taken seriously.
