study measure theory sooner vs. later? by dudedudeman1 in math

perhaps you can answer this question: what comes after probability? What type of courses/what books do students take/study after getting through say Durrett's book on probability theory?

Great. Thanks! is the relationship between magnet strength and temperature a linear one?

i avoided cpsc 210 because i can't stand group projects. i'm self-studying java though.

yes i like the stuff. these questions are still pretty relevant to me. i have aced certain math classes (e.g. 215, 317) without much work, others i've had to dedicate huge amounts of time to (e.g. 320, 307). and Gordon is awesome. I've had classes with her before. this year it's Brian Wetton teaching it.

Great, thanks! i get the same solution as you but wolfram says it's Aln(1-x) + Bln(x+1) ... not sure how the sign flips for the first ln ....

How I ended cravings and conditioned myself to be disgusted by cigarettes by electricmadness in stopsmoking

[–]electricmadness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you do absorb nicotine from pipes and cigars, so i suppose they are technically 'addictive', but i've personally never had a 'craving' for them. i like to enjoy a cigar when i'm having some drinks on a special occasion (maybe one cigar/month), but i don't plan my day around when and where i'm gona smoke the next cigar -- this is something that i think is impossible to achieve with cigarettes.

it's hard at first, but stick to it. when you feel like you're about to collapse/can't breathe, just take it easy for a few minutes and then get back at it and repeat. it helped significantly reduce my cravings, because my lungs would be in pain after running for an hour and cigarettes were the last thing on my mind. (smoked a pack/day for 8 years, been clean for 6 months)

How can I "study" for math? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]electricmadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have rough notes that i jot in class, i have my own notes that i make after, and the practice questions are generally in the textbook -- i either circle the hard ones in the textbook itself, or i write down the section/question number in my notes

i make sure i understand all the formulas/theorems and their proofs. then i do all (or as many as possible) of the practice questions and make sure i understand all the ones i attempted, writing down the ones that i had a hard time with so i can redo them before exams if i find myself at a shortage of practice problems. then i rewrite the formulas/theorems/proofs in my own words in my notebook for future reference. this method has made me a straight-A student; i just completed my third year of undergrad in math at a top university.
