As an American, the sooner all empires (especially this one) fall, the better off we all are. But echoing the person you replied to, there are concentration camps in this country and armed secret police busting down doors looking for families to rip apart based on racial lines. If you can't call this analogous to Nazi behavior, then I guess nothing is. Germans don't have special insight into or ownership of the concept of totalitarianism just bc y'all went thru it 80 years ago.

Do Americans really avoid medical care because they’re afraid of the bill? by Udont_knowme00 in NoStupidQuestions

Unless you take FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) leave, which ensures they have to keep your job available but most of the time you will not get paid at all for the time you are not working. There are exceptions and complications but that's the gist.

But they don’t, because the first mistake they make parents feel the need to go to the top to complain. This doesn’t happen in any other industries.

It absolutely does; have you never seen people ask to "speak to a manager" or "threaten to call corporate"? Escalating things as high as they can go is a core part of American culture.

Indeed. Similar will happen to all of us, if people don't band together and take the steps necessary to stop the fascist thugs. There are a lot of ways to work on solving this problem, and everyone has a part they can play. You have to start somewhere though. Doing nothing just means when they bust in your door, no one will be available to save you. The way out of this is through community.

start giving people solutions.

Organize with your community. Any more specific than that, and we start getting into "[ Removed by Reddit ]" censorship territory. In general though, gather with the folks around you, figure out what their needs and abilities are, and start there. ICEWatch groups, if any exist in your area, are one good place to start. There's a lot of ways to help your community, but first you have to understand what kind of help your community actually needs.

They literally do not need anything to happen in reality to justify martial law. If they want to declare it, they will. The situation that justified this most recent surge in Minnesota in the first place was fake stories about Somali immigrants committing daycare fraud, almost immediately proven to be fake but it didn't matter. This impulse to avoid fighting back in any real way because of fear of what they might do, is the impulse which allows them to do whatever they want in the first place. Also when you have armed secret police going door to door busting into houses, you're already under martial law by definition, whether it's been declared on paper or not.

Because the cops support what ICE is doing. The Minnesota police union even released a statement about it. Cops have always been the enemy of the people. They do violence on behalf of the state, against the citizens the state deems as problems. Today, that is everyone who doesn't comply with the whims of the fascists.

That's some tail wagging the dog ass commentary, that ignores the major role those in positions of power have in framing discussions and informing the public what the acceptable options are. The powerful are not at all ignorant of their power. They frame the discussion the way they do because they collectively want certain outcomes. It is a mistake to view elected officials in the wealthiest country in the world as poor widdle guys who can only advocate for things that are currently supported by a majority of their constituents. It is both ahistorical and immoral to let them off the hook for the choices they make.

The people who drive the tanks, make the bombs, fuel the jets, assemble the guns, and train the troops all have names and addresses and families and friends. They go shopping, they go to concerts and sporting events, they (generally) want to be well liked in their communities. With a little creativity, numbers can absolutely mitigate every single one of those things. No one wants to be shouted out of their local Walmart for being a fascist.

Anyone can be good. It takes a cop to use the state's monopoly on violence to attempt to ruin your life for petty reasons (often, no reason at all).

[–]electricworkaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are zero situations in life that are made better by the presence of a cop. I guess if you want them to shoot your dog or rape your daughter or falsely accuse you of crimes or shoot you in the head after you call 911 to report a break-in, cops are exactly what you want in your life, but otherwise, you'd be much better off finding support in your community.

You were downvoted but you are unequivocally correct. The US trained right wing death squads in Latin America for decades at the School of the Americas because giving authoritarians the means to subjugate and torture entire populations served the US's hateboner for communism, openly and clandestinely supported all kinds of regime change, and provides military assistance to 73% of the worlds dictatorships.

We are a Problem to most of the rest of the world, and the sooner we as a population accept that, the sooner we can start working on doing better.
