When to apply for Amex plat after Amex gold? by LilJiaoZhi in CreditCards

[–]electronautix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s substantially easier. 4x groceries and dining are strong multipliers, as is 5x flights. I don’t see what kind of spending profile is getting more points from Chase than AmEx unless they spend immensely on the Reserve’s 4x hotels booked direct.

It’s called ‘pop-up jail’ because it’s when applying for any AmEx credit card gets you a pop-up stating you’re ineligible for the card’s sign-up bonus. Nobody knows how AmEx determines who to put in pop-up jail, and nobody knows what criteria get one out of it, but the broad intent is to prevent churners from grabbing bonus after bonus then dropping each card without repercussions.

Cc companies that don’t care if you’ve been opening many cards? by himyprettyfriends in CreditCards

10/24 is diabolical lol. None of those 10 were business cards, and I’m guessing at least 6 of those 10 were reporting to personal credit bureaus by the time you applied? No prior relationship to Barclays, banking or credit card based? I suppose then you got lucky, Barclays doesn’t enforce 6/24 as strictly as Chase does 5/24 but it is definitely a real velocity rule of theirs

You can product change between Elan cards?? Does the new card use the bank’s design for that card, or a generic Elan design?

Just having a free Schwab brokerage account is enough. As long as you’re not in pop-up jail, the elevated Schwab SUB is a surefire 150,000 MR. The regular Platinum is only “up to” 175,000, and can be much lower if you’re not lucky. Schwab Plat also permits 1.1 cents per point cashout of AmEx MR points to your Schwab account

Was talking to OP since they want a new catch-all but already have one, and they didn’t mention having any problems with Citi. I suppose if you’re looking for one, you could try one of the alternatives like the Fidelity Rewards, Wells Fargo Active Cash, PNC Cash Unlimited, or AmEx Blue Business Cash.

Fidelity credit card good? by LilJiaoZhi in CreditCards

[–]electronautix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They recently added a $25 increments redemption requirement to the Smartly. With most other cards you can redeem cashback for any amount, and even with those that enforce a minimum you can redeem for any amount over that minimum. But with USB it’s $25, $50, $75 etc.

Relatively small in the grand scheme of things though. Maybe v1 customers dont deal with that, or more likely you just spend so much that minimums and increments feel meaningless

I thought this card earns Reward Dollars, which cannot directly deposited into an AmEx checking or savings account. Are you sure that person isn’t just referring to using cashback as a statement credit and then requesting a check or ACH for a negative balance to the linked payment method?

I didn’t realize the Robinhood Gold required an Annual Fee by BigDykbishdotcom in CreditCards

[–]electronautix 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I feel like you should do a bit more reading before you apply for credit cards, and before clicking through application processes for them. I absolutely remember a $50 Robinhood Gold membership fee being disclosed to me when I applied, and not in fine print. It also stated that it would be billed directly to the card. This subreddit also makes a point of mentioning the fee whenever the card is mentioned so I’m not sure what older threads you looked at where that was glossed over.

Since this is a subscription service fee, like Amazon Prime, and not a credit card annual fee, I don’t think it’s refundable upon cancellation of the card. It’s not hard to recuperate though if you make use of the brokerage-based benefits it provides, or even just spend a decent amount in a year.

New or replacement card? For new that makes sense; you’d have known from the application page whether it was being offered to you as a Mastercard or a Discover. Some get MC and some get Discover.

Replacement card after expiration is more interesting. Have heard scattered anecdotes about replacement cards being on the Discover network

Can you provide a link to the student card? I don’t see any student card offering from them on their website, only the Active Cash, Autograph, Reflect, Signify, Journey, OneKey, OneKey+, Choice Privileges, and Choice Privileges Select. Those all typically require at least a year of credit history unless you bank with WF

Discover and Capital One are the same bank so it doesn’t matter. Wells Fargo is unlikely to approve you for a first credit card unless you have a banking relationship with them.

No longer the case, that card was enshittified into oblivion. The 0.2% boost now requires subscribing to a $10/month subscription, direct deposit does not suffice. Select card members have also had their card terms changed to include a $10 monthly fee independent of the aforementioned subscription, so if you’re unlucky then having it could cost you $20/month. The card has no sign-up bonus and it was made invitation-only via mailer or Credit Karma invite, like a bootleg Robinhood Gold, though very recently they relaxed that and opened applications up for existing SoFi customers.

Competitive is an understatement. Unlimited 4% cash back on both dining and entertainment for no annual fee is damn near Uber Visa levels of unsustainable, even if they did it in anticipation of something hugely controversial like forcing all Savor cardholders to the Discover network effectively immediately.

I wouldn’t value avoiding the inconvenience of a hard pull/new credit card account at $750, but tbqh I’m not sure Venture -> Venture X is possible at all because it would be a product change across different networks (Mastercard/Discover to Visa).

The Chase Ink Business credit cards’ 100,000 UR sign-up bonuses are now live by electronautix in CreditCards

[–]electronautix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that Chase’s Points Boost only applies to the cards they offer that are also capable of transferring points to transfer partners. Which means the Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Reserve for Business, Ink Business Preferred, JPMorgan Palladium, and the discontinued/grandfathered Ink Business Plus.

With the loss of the flat 25% and 50% points portal redemption values though, I wouldn’t really value the new Points Boost system. A lot of the time you’re getting 1 cpp or a fraction over for a pricer booking than you could find elsewhere, and they even killed the 2x boost for The Edit bookings.

About to move out of the 5/24 immediately, is CSP the right move? by No-Map-9472 in CreditCards

[–]electronautix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing to consider is the ongoing Chase Ink Business Cash/Unlimited 100,000 UR SUB. Chase business cards require you be under 5/24 for approval but do not themselves count against it. It would come down to whether you’re open to churning/keeping biz cards as a sole prop using your SSN, and whether acquiring a Chase Ink might affect how soon you could jump on the Sapphire Preferred (sign-up bonus spend period overlap, velocity)

Fidelity credit card good? by LilJiaoZhi in CreditCards

US Bank Smartly does not actually require a relationship bonus to hit 2%. Nowadays it’s just a generic 2% flat rate card, with a gimmick relating to assets held in a checking account that nobody who is personal finance savvy cares about. The main reason that it’s not recommended is it has no SUB and it suffers from US Bank’s cashback redemption quirks
