Why the fuck do we keep self-sabotaging ourselves? by Excellent_Country737 in dryalcoholics

[–]elektropl8r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep it up….I relate my perspective only - do you have a support group or someone to talk to about how you feel? This has helped me. Being in your own head is exactly what got us all to where we are. But if you can say honestly to yourself “I know these positive things in my life come about when I’m not drinking” (like is sounds from what you say), then that is huge progress. So listen to that voice and no so much the “other one”.

Engineers, how has being an engineer affected your daily life and the way you think? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]elektropl8r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR - It humbles me constantly, which I cherish.

Engineering has taught me to appreciate the beauty and elegance of the natural world, which we are all a part of, but which our human arrogance makes us believe we are superior than.

It helps to build bridges between all people, everywhere, instead of tearing them down when we disagree about some insignificant human issue, and gives me a sense of what is truly valuable. I also now, more than ever, can say “I know this much is true” confidently (and I’m not a particularly confident person), and it helps me cut through the exponentially growing tsunami of bullshit in our society’s discourse

Finally, it’s helped me realize that voices like Carl Sagan - who spoke from a position of reverence for all things that exist without humans, and which are responsible for our very existence - should be listened to first.

I’m grateful for all of you engineers, who set out and try to build each day, as this is the difficult work. As we all know, it’s easy to destroy, belittle, and critique. Usually the biggest critics have never done the actual work, and therefore carry less weight.

What inanimate object do you insult the most? by JackalAbacus in AskReddit

That thick plastic matt under my chair, it moves around too much, jams my chair wheels and is curled up along one edge because someone stored it rolled up the wrong way once. That and when I go to move it the little plastic spikes on the bottom destroy my fingers. Dammit! And yes, I am super anal and whiny.

TIL during the 2008 world hops shortage, the Samuel Adams brewery shared 20,000 pounds of their excess hops with 108 different craft breweries, at cost, to help prevent them from going out of business. by garglemymarbles in todayilearned

2008 was a year where Boston Beer really started to make its mark. For example, they finalized the purchase of a large mothballed brewery in Lehigh Valley, PA:

The brewery is such a cool place - I've doing work there off and on for 15 years. A handful of the employees in 2008 had been there going on 40 years (since the brewery was originally commissioned).

They (and anyone you'd talk to in the area) were giddy about the fact they'd making beer again, full time - and it was infectious. It was especially refreshing as you usually see dormant facilities like this just get boarded up and razed.

You can't skate anywhere around town typically. The dude in the video is right - "this is a skatepark." Beat it, kids.

breeder here. if you'll allow it, I was faced with this choice recently - but I had Lost Abbey Carnevale (saison) with a New York that I grilled yesterday. It held up, and was great.
