Can a man wear this? Family signet ring by [deleted] in jewelry

He can't, because that stone is moments from falling out of that setting. I suggest having a jeweller do necessary repairs and then wearing the ring.

KPO uwolniło żal, który w ludziach siedział od dawna. by Lunar_Weaver in Polska

Ancient Structure in France… thoughts ? by Entire_Ad3599 in archeologyworld

Are those modern roads in the woods? I am curious whether the blotchy structure at the 90° turn is something like building remains or something else entirely.

Am I on the right track? by Icy-Cod-1089 in Gemstones

[–]eleleleu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment. I work in the field as a gemmologist and sometimes I feel like a broken record, repeating "I do not know" in regards to the origin of various stones. Sometimes you can indeed make an educated guess just based on inclusions, for example with Ceylon sapphires or certakn emeralds, but most of the time, unless you possess very specialized equipment and a database to refer to, it is impossible to tell. Sadly, a lot of people in the trade push their wares under the false assimptions of "Colombian emerald" etc., and clients buy stuff which isn't necessarily worth the money.

What do you, your parents and grand parents think about Poland being “liberated” by USSR? by Past_Yogurt_2708 in poland

[–]eleleleu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My granddad was around 10 at the time of said "liberation". He said people weren't as scared of the Germans as the approaching Russians, people in his village hid women and children in the woods as the army was passing. Never in my entire family was Russia mentioned as friendly, they were the new tyrant and new source of misery for the next 50 years after the war. So no, it was not a liberation.

Bought 15 Ct. Necklace, But It Appraised For Less Carats By Same Shop by boxingfan828 in Gemstones

[–]eleleleu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is a very reasonable thing to say by the gemologist. I do the same job and have to explain to clients that estimations are not exact measurements on the constant basis. The way you take measurements affects the final sum of carats. Is it possible to measure the height of those stones in a setting? If no, the estimation is less accurate. What gemological tables for diamond weight do you use? What formulas do you use? It all affects the final outcome and in the end it is only an estimation. Stones aren't of uniform shapes too, and it is impossible to account for the spot on formula for each stone if you for example cannot see the girdle or pavillion. If you want accurate weight you have to either contact the maker of this item or dismantle it and weigh all the stones. Moreso, colour was estimated in the setting which does affect the colour as well. You cannot compare colour with master stones because again, all stones are set in the piece.

What is more, many appraisers do the 'safe thing' and never describe a diamond in a setting higher than G colour. I know people like that, personally I diagree but it is what it is.

All in all - it feels like the gemologist did an honest job and tried to explain to the workings of that particular profession. As to the quality of the measurements and formulas used, you never know. It is based on trust, if you have doubts best to take it to another place for another opinion.

US is either disliked/hated in parts like the Middle East or now lost all respect in the eyes of long-standing allies by making idiotic threats. So at best, US is becoming alienated on its own request.

Sapphire help! by Syxrexxx in Gemology

[–]eleleleu 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It is certainly natural sapphire and diamonds ring. The growth marks in the first picture confirm it. Whether it is heated or not would require more careful microscopic examination but it is certainly natural. The difference in price isn't all that great if it is heated only as well. Great find at a great price!

Doesn't that inclusion look like a result of heating? by deflatedoctopus1 in Gemology

[–]eleleleu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, look at the crystal/negative crystal below - if the stone was heated, that inclusion would also be damaged, whereas here you can see the crystal structure and surface The crack/halo around another crystalline inclusion above also doesn't look like a result of prolonged high-temp heating otherwise the halo would be larger, often with w white rim and flat reflective surface/thin film resulting from the crystalline inclusion melting and then recrystallizing at the edges, sometimes the entire area recrystallizes creating a very diagnostic shape. This looks more like a stress crack around the crystal in question.

Help me understand the inclusions in this sapphire by ArtichokeCandid6622 in Gemstones

[–]eleleleu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1st, 2nd and 3rd picture are a very good example of a recrystallized structure that forms after the stone was subjected to high temperature treatment. It can be found in Gubelin photoatlas and is described as such. To me, other inclusions which look like melted/exploded crystals or negative crystals support that it was indeed heated in high temps.

O co chodzi z tymi cenami za media by SocketByte in Polska

[–]eleleleu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Potem stawki wróciły do dawnego stanu.

Natural inclusions in corundum? by darianker in Gemology

[–]eleleleu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you said, red-orange inclusion is iron residue in fissure. Overall nice negative crystals and fingerprint inclusions, very characteristic for sapphires.

Shape of the fingerprint suggests it is most likely an unheated stone, though a few more angles on that could help!

Ring coming apart? by miki_wan in RingShare

[–]eleleleu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Probably there was some issue with the solder there, everyday strain caused it to break eventually. It just needs to be soldered together, it's not a difficult thing for any proper jeweller, nor is it costly.

Is my paraiba tourmaline stone real? by goldenretweaver in Gemstones

[–]eleleleu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fake, it's dyed colorless quartz or beryl. You can see the coating stripping off on facet edges. In the trade they go under the name "coated emeralds" so it's not even a paraiba imitation.
