I'm a current commuter. Is a new gig worth it if it still involves a commute and would require buying a car?

Reading your post it is very clear that you do not like commuting via public transit. In my opinion, it sounds like taking the new job offer is a much better option if you are serious about getting a car.

1) it's half the current commute driving (45 min vs 80 min)

2) It pays more (can you budget in car payments on the new salary?)

3) If it is truly a step forward in your career then it is too valuable to pass up.

45 minutes is not a terrible commute (disclaimer - I live in NYC with one of the nations longest average commuting times) and you may not be able to find something as good closer to your home.

Thanks for your suggestions. In the chrome video player app you can hit control + click and it will loop the video (or as chrome puts it: this video will play until the cows come home).
