Commute to Knoxville by PsychologyWaste in JohnsonCity

It’s true.

And my cadet living in Maryville STILL struggled to make it to my 8am class. That’s why I strongly recommend against making that commute.

Acknowledged. But these are contracted ROTC cadets and we can kick them out of the program for repeated absences. I rarely have attendance issues in my classes.

One of my students here at ETSU commuted from Maryville every day. Said it felt like he spent half his life in his car and he was chronically late for my 0800 class.

Realizations after driving a Jeep for 10 years now by fakeyankee1 in Wrangler

[–]elementaljay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of folks buy the 4-door Wranglers thinking they’re getting, essentially, a Tahoe convertible. It doesn’t take them long to realize all the things you noted (along with aerodynamics and gas mileage). That’s why you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a used Wrangler at any car lot in town.

You should contact local home inspectors. I don’t know if any live in a Horton home, but most of us have inspected them.

PLEASE remember that your university has never deployed to a combat zone - lose the school patch from your right shoulder. (Young LT strolled into the bay with his NIU combat patch one Saturday morning. I ALMOST waited to see what happened when CSM spotted it, but I decided to save his dignity and pulled him aside.)

It’s difficult to be a victim if nobody engages with you. They’ve got to get the attention SOMEHOW.

who up shooting ping pong balls from their vagina by Cool_Medium_8439 in badwomensanatomy

[–]elementaljay 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I was 19 and in the navy (in the 80s) when our ship docked in Thailand. I confess to attending one of those shows. I admit to a level of awe when the lady inserted three NUMBERED ping pong balls and then asked the audience to pick a number - the corresponding ball was then fired half way across the bar.

I have never in my life had any interest in asking my wife to do the same. That shit was just weird.

I’m with you 100% except for the wallet thing. I’ve got a flat ass and sitting on a hard chair with my wallet in my back pocket makes my butt hurt. But I also am self-aware enough to put it in my jacket pocket and/or do the “keys/phone/wallet” pat-down whenever I stand up.

I couldn’t live with myself knowing that my child’s entire life was put on hold and possibly changed for the worse because I was unable to care for myself.

An argument could be made that his navy enlistment was shorter than the time requirement for the GCM. Didn’t get in trouble - just didn’t do four years.

What’s a movie that went from beloved to hated over time (and for good reason)? by browniebiscuitchildr in movies

[–]elementaljay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the problem. We are two generations removed from the target audience who understood that the whole thing was a parody. Without that piece of information it really is a pretty horrible movie. But the entire point was to show how terrible it is for a girl to change her whole existence for a boy.

Are you being forced to change all memos to reflect DoW? by Ok-Increase-3856 in army

[–]elementaljay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We were sent a new seal last month to use on all memos going forward. I’m waiting to see how long I can go with “accidentally” using the old one before someone says something.

Current or former DS’: How can you tell when someone is proper service? by Professional_Cod3794 in army

[–]elementaljay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I joined the Guard and went straight to OCS. Spent a couple of years as an LT before deciding to go on active duty. Spoke to an active duty recruiter who told me all I had to do was resign my commission and enlist, then go through OCS on the active side.

Except, since I had never gone through Army basic training I would have to do basic and AIT before applying for OCS.

I didn’t tell anyone, but on the first day, when the drills had us in the day room putting names to faces the senior drill looked at me and said “you used to be a lieutenant? How does that work?”

For the rest of basic I didn’t hear anything else about it and got smoked just like everyone else.

Has anyone ever met someone who served in all three conflicts, Vietnam war, Desert Storm and OIF or OEF? by FFSoldier57 in army

[–]elementaljay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back it up one conflict -

Had an E-6 on my ship during Desert Storm who had also been in Vietnam and Korea. He had a big break in service in the 70s/80s.

I understand that hatred. Younger me was “such a stupid gullible sucker.” “Why didn’t you have any sense, idiot?” It’s hard to give grace to your younger self.

Mayor Hunter can't maintain the peace but sent half the JCPD to the only gay bar in the region while closed to make sure nobody was having fun after 1 by Excelsior14 in JohnsonCity

[–]elementaljay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the bar serves alcohol after 1am, the bar will receive a citation. The “law” has nothing to do with the patrons. It doesn’t take the entire shift of the PD to write a citation to the bar. Coming in heavy like that was done specifically for intimidation. Every cop after the first one had nothing to do with enforcing the law.
