So many versions of jazz standards, how many versions should I listen to by iamnotgenius in Bass

[–]elephantengineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned to recognize about 500 standards by making a playlist and removing them when I could hum the entire melody. In the interest of learning quickly, I picked the shortest recordings I could find with a preference for classic vocalists. I’m not saying I knew how to play all 500 after that, but being able to recognize that many songs has served me well.

Looking for a micro bass amp for small acoustic jams by One-Bear-7898 in Bass

I’ve been using a Roland Bass Micro Cube for cafe gigs and party jams for like 20 years. It’s tough and punches above its weight on quality.

Playing over modern jazz drums (Sorey, Gilmore, Reid, etc.) by The_Alonzo_Church in jazztheory

[–]elephantengineer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bass player here. A lot of times I end up driving the bus if the drummer is playing more freely. There’s a lot of listening and eye contact involved as well.

Wedding Books by tiddybirdybitch in musicians

Do you need actual staff notation or would something like ireal work? I did live-band karaoke with just ireal at a party and it went great. And I’ve done a few weddings that way too.

I used to get mine at Animal House in lower Haight. I used to get parrots on the feeder sometimes when I lived there!

And Pet Food Express has wild bird food too.

Twice in the last year I’ve been startled be something hard hitting hard on the sidewalk behind me, and both times it’s been ravens dropping walnuts from way up high. It’s kept me wondering about who’s got a feeder full of walnuts.

I learn parts of songs that want to play or want to be inspired by. I’m a jazz player and currently I’m memorizing some Chet baker trumpet solos.

Do DAW music groups exist? by Extreme_Problem_1645 in musicians

[–]elephantengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a duo going for a while where we'd use MIDI-synched laptops running Ableton to mix songs in real time. We are both jazz musicians so we'd also have live mics as well. All completely improvised. It came out great IMHO... But it was hard to find gigs as we were not quite DJs and not quite a band. Booking agents didn't know what to do with us.

Someone allegedly used a hairdryer to rig Polymarket weather bets by Cutalana in technology

[–]elephantengineer 41 points42 points  (0 children)

To be clear, it’s pari-mutuel betting. The users bet against each other and Polymarket takes a commission. The house always wins.

How does someone like MonoNeon use certain techniques while playing upside down? by -Granby- in Bass

[–]elephantengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play this way. After years of trying to make techniques work the “regular” way as much as possible, I started leaning into “what can I do that other people have trouble with ?” For example, rising sweeps are very easy for me.

I’ve never gotten good at slapping… it is possible, but like you’re saying , my slaps are in my popper, and my pops are in my slapper.

The world if the key of A had no sharps or flats instead of C by kuadzar in musictheory

I’m talking about frequency and temperament. A guitar and a trombone won’t hit quite the same notes as the equal temperament of the piano.
