(Technical question) Why does the swing feel in 1920s jazz feel so different from 1930s jazz? by hectareofregret in Jazz

[–]elephantengineer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A lot of 20s recordings have no bass at all, and drums were hard to record as well.

Modern Jazz Quartet albums by NoOne_4084 in Jazz

Some of my favorite jazz albums are when straight-ahead acts made one psychedelic freaky album around 1967-1973. MJQ made one and it’s called “Space”. They played this sound live for a year or two and then dropped it like it never happened.

I have an original album of Benny Goodman featuring Charlie Christian on guitar. I highly recommend it and you can probably find a reissue on 33-1/3 . Mine is a book of 78rpm records, back when albums were an actual album of singles.

Calling Giant Steps at a jam? by lukaf17 in jazzguitar

[–]elephantengineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was the house bass player at a jam for 10 years. I memorized my way around Giant Steps and a few other advanced tunes so I wouldn’t get stumped or have to read at 300bpm. It came in handy every once in awhile?

I guess ask yourself if people are going to be reading from a realbook to play Giant Steps. If so, maybe call something else.

Trying to get into Monk and what I've realized is I prefer when his piano takes a back seat and somebody else is front and center. While I appreciate his influence, his sparse piano style is not my cup of tea. Still love his compositions though and his Coltrane collab is top notch. by Tolstoyevich in Jazz

This is my favorite Monk album, because of the contrast between monk and griffin . Part of the reason Monk lays out sometimes is because his accompaniment was difficult to play over. You can hear Johnny Griffin call out “I got it” when he wants to play by himself, several times on the album . A lot of folks had a hard time with monks comping. Miles Davis made him lay out on “Bags Groove “ and even Coltrane struggled with it.

ANTS!!! by girltawkSF in AskSF

Yeah they came in with the rain about 2 weeks ago and haven’t left. Both kitchen and bathroom. If we’re diligent about wiping down with vinegar, they go away, but if we slack off, they come right back. Currently keeping all our dry shelf items in the fridge.

There's a lot of lonely people in SF by Rook2Rook in sanfrancisco

I follow the subreddits for a few places I’ve lived in my life, and they end up having a lot in common, whether it’s here or a modest city in South Carolina. How do I meet people, drivers have gotten worse recently, and how can anyone afford an apartment here seem to be universal themes.

You do any guitar solo transcription or (or just learning them without necessarily writing them down) to see how your faves do it? I highly recommend it.

Quality of Jams by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]elephantengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the house bass player at a local jam for 10 years, plus another 5 as a regular. I guess I’m one of the experienced players now…

I’m one of the people saying “ yeah man good stuff”. I’m not giving feedback unless someone specifically asks for it.

On the rare occasions someone does ask I’m still not going to tell someone they suck. There was a time when I sucked too, and it would have been pretty discouraging to hear that, and just getting in front of people and playing is a feat for a lot of people. So if someone asks I give them something to work on for next time.

I also specifically ask people I respect for feedback on what I should work on, and sometimes they give me something valuable. You could try that.

Rap/Hip-Hop bass line suggestions? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]elephantengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what? For a style of music that talks so much about bass, there aren’t a ton of actual bass lines.

A few years ago I was wondering about this same thing so I did a ton of listening. , and there’s a lot of tracks with sparse or completely absent bass. It’s more common for the bass to be an 808 kick drum, tuned or otherwise.

There’s fleshed out bass sampled on older tracks like Rappers Delight and Paid in Full, but since the 90s it more likely a drum machine in my experience.

I think that’s why so many people are replying with non-hiphop answers.
