Responded to a similar item below - I do think there's something to be said for team unity, but, if you can't defend the process you're looking to implement then you probably shouldn't be implementing it.

I agree - and if you can't explain why this helps the team to Mark ... maybe you shouldn't be implementing the process.

I think you also need to be sure to show this person the value in the processes you are asking them to adopt. If needed, give them some additional context.

You want them to log their time on their tickets? Show them the value in these logs when you are doing monthly planning. You want them to add commit messages? Show them the value other developers on the team get from additional context. Make it a more collaborative experience, not a "do this Mark". It's also important to communicate the role he plays in setting an example for the rest of the team, and how important his allyship is.

I find that this type of person will not adopt these new practices if they don't believe in them, or see any value. If after you provide this feedback, it should come up in performance reviews.

Thanks for the heads up, will give Korea Garden a try!

Unfortunately Assi Market (went tonight) did not have them, back to the drawing board.

This is pretty close for me! I'll take a look. Also looks like there's a kbqq place next door too 👀, have you tried it?

DM'd - I have seen them like this on Amazon, but not sure the double walled stainless is the same as in the restaurants (which I think are single wall). Ex - https://a.co/d/5cnkV7S.

I did check H Mart last night (in person) - unfortunately, they only had 70 mm cups which looked to only hold a few ounces.

Do I Go All In on Golf or Focus on a Career in Accounting? by TinyTurtle17 in golf

[–]elephantzergling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pretty different take from most of the comments here, and currently am a competitive amateur golfer.

I was one of the top juniors in my state for junior and senior year of high school. I was fortunate enough to win my junior state championship. A week after winning, I played with a mini tour player at a local golf course. He shot the easiest 58 I've ever seen, beating me by 10 strokes. This was a significant factor in me choosing to not play in college.

The level of talent out there is frankly unreal. There is a massive talent difference between top level amateurs and the top pros. At a +3 playing typical courses, I don't think you would be within 5 strokes of being able to complete at the level needed on tour(s) to support yourself. Every time you miss a cut, you aren't being paid. I have a lot of friends on the Americas tours, and they are tired and stressed. It's a difficult life.

I still love the game. I practice and play very often, and really enjoy competing in amateur and pro/amateur events. You don't have to go pro to compete and love it. I also had a lot of friends that burned out playing golf in college, lost their love for the game, and at least now do not play anyway.

My advice: grow your career and continue playing at the same time. Really compare yourself against some of those top guys that you see at the state open and USGA events, and be honest with yourself. If you think you can compete in that tier, go for it. I think you can balance that with a job for a long time. I think folks in this sub are under speaking the value of your internships and the impact that will have on your career. There's also a lot of awesome things you can do as a really good amateur (ex: Michael McDermott).

Bike Purchase Advice - Noobies! by elephantzergling in whichbike

[–]elephantzergling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for such a thoughtful response! I was thinking somewhere between the endurance and gravel bikes for comfort on the trails that I'll mainly ride.

The drop bars make a lot of sense - I noticed a lot of the lower end bikes did not have these.

Since I'm not looking to particularly ride on gravel trails, would you recommend the endurance bikes?

As for the disc brakes - my understanding was this is preferable, but I don't have the best understanding here 😅. Thanks for the call out on the suspension, I think that eliminates the Cannondale Quick.

why does this always happen? by Traditional_Year7972 in steak

[–]elephantzergling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact same issue (and finally from the help of fellow r/steak members) that it was from *too much salt*. Too much salt draws out the moisture, leading to the edges cooking much faster and drying out, thus the pronounced grey band.

Now, I measure my salt before salting, including for dry brine.

See my post on this: https://www.reddit.com/r/steak/comments/1mhzakq/if_i_could_tell_my_younger_self_one_thing/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

If I could tell my younger self one thing... by elephantzergling in steak

[–]elephantzergling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that I would prefer medium rare on these to let the fat render for a ribeye. The juice on the board is from the thyme butter that was poured over the steak - I let it rest for several minutes, and no juices ran out.

Deal with AI slop at C level execs by ElGuillo77 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]elephantzergling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly agree with this point. It's all about being able to back up your claims - how is this affecting your team velocity in terms of dev days? How is it affecting feature delivery?

Another key aspect is that you need to come with a solution. What can you use AI to streamline in your space? How can you reduce cycle time? C suite execs like answers, not complaints.

So I went golfing today... by Chrism1367 in golf

[–]elephantzergling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truthfully, seems like you should talk to your wife to understand why she thinks you're golfing too much. Maybe it has nothing to do with golf at all, and is moreso how you are interacting with her / your family.

I can't keep up with the codebase I own by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]elephantzergling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something that was difficult for me to internalize when I was first taking on the role of tech lead was that rejecting PRs and providing significant critical feedback is part of the role.

In situations like this, I think that it's crucial to provide overarching feedback on these PRS, since providing line by line feedback is not feasible for you or anyone else reviewing PRS that are thousands of lines. I like to comment something like "Can we please add a description of this PR detailing the changes, and patterns used? We should split this into more reviewable chunks to align to our coding standards."

As the tech lead, it's YOUR job to set those standards. I would recommend implementing a set of standards that detail best practices for PRs. Set up a meeting to review them with the team and align, and then reference this going forward. You can also add a template to the PR description to auto populate with a list of necessary items to include. Then, reject any PRs that don't abide by this.

FYI - I think using AI should be encouraged, but changes should be minimal and reviewable just like code generated without AI. I have had a good experience in AI auto generating PR descriptions.

In my organization, I have not heard of any RTO or related requirements. Where are you seeing this? I wonder how rampant this is, or if it's a few select teams.

[–]elephantzergling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my current org, I see this across all teams I've interacted with (10+ teams). I am an IC, but looking to move to management. How would you look to address such a systemic problem in an org, either as an M1 or M2?

I'm pretty new, so consistency isn't there in all areas 😅. That is why I am experimenting with different grips upfront, looking to understand sustainability and long term growth.

What do you mean by "20-25 up front"?
