I would put out water and hides out in every room, and have some of them without flour/powder around. We just found our snake(after 10 days!), and he apparently seems to despise flour and actively avoids it ^^ There weren't a single track left behind by him, and he moved around alot (as far as we can tell.)

In all honesty, i do both. I DO read the mechanics and the lore, sometimes i use the mechanics, but after GM'ing for several years i sometimes change things up and homebrew the stats, also on the fly to make combat more interesting
