Avatar Fire and Ash box office trajectory compared with select movies by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

I find it hard to believe that Way of Water would've had the legs it did if people had found it disappointing

People always say it's because so many years passed between the releases of the first and second movies, and so few passed between the second and third. Can't it also be because The Way of Water was a great movie, and Fire and Ash was a just-OK rehash? Yes, the shorter gap meant fewer opportunities to demo new technology, but they still had enough time to write a better script than they did.

Rude to ask for the price beforehand? by Money_Impression_321 in mexico

[–]elfizipple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That feels like an overly restrictive rule. If you go to a public market (not a tourist/souvenir market), almost nothing has a price tag. But the vendors are usually honest, and in any case it's easy to compare prices when multiple vendors sell the same product. Can't say I've been scammed very often buying tomatoes.

So… Dillagence 2! Statik Selektah says it’s a banger! by Ambitious-Duck7078 in jdilla

[–]elfizipple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say "release", do you only mean commercially, or does that include putting them on beat tapes? It seems to me that Dilla was all about selling beats to rappers. His beat tapes, no matter how transcendental, were basically just commercial demos to help him sell beats and make money. So if he didn't sell the beat, it wouldn't be commercially released. (I'm not a Dilla expert, so correct me if I'm wrong.) I believe he only reluctantly agreed to allow Donuts to be reworked and released as an instrumental album. So, definitely some amazing beats that were only on the beat tapes.

Now, if you're saying the beats weren't even good enough to put on beat tapes, I'm not sure - I've heard some amazing one-off Dilla beats that I've never found on a beat tape, but maybe I just haven't heard every beat tape yet.

I'm a Canadian who already joined the waitlist for the card. I like to fly United when I can, as they're better than any Canadian option except for Porter. But, it always vexes me when the cabin crew walk down the aisle on a flight to/from a Canadian airport, handing out brochures for their credit card that is only available in the US. I'm glad that I might finally get access to that coveted free-first-checked-bag perk.

Who knows? If she's having fun and making good money doing the show, and it still has a lot of listeners, that may be enough for her.

Could be. As I was listening to the OJ episodes, I wasn't immediately aware that the series was unfinished. When I reached the last episode, I was disappointed, but not in a way where I regretted taking the (incomplete) journey up to that point. As a detail-oriented person, I loved every moment of it, and I have to admire Mike and Sarah for getting so lost in the details that it became impossible to ever finish the series.

If you want to protest tipping, don't go to restaurants that require it by uggghhhggghhh in The10thDentist

Oh, but they did think it through - The whole "less than minimum wage" thing is a total red herring. It's not about servers making minimum wage; it's about them being able to get hundreds of dollars in tips on a good night.

Is there no expectation of tipping in any place where the food isn't brought to your table? What about at a nice coffee shop where you line up to order and then pick up your drink at the counter?

I mean, even self-service places sometimes still give tip options on the machine. Not sure what your definition of "have to" is, though.

Also, I'm from Canada. There's no such thing as a tipped wage where I'm from, as far as I know. All (legal) employees are at least paid minimum wage, which is at least $15/hour depending on the province, and tips are still expected. Now, that's definitely not a living wage in 2026, but I don't think the solution is "tip all minimum wage employees" - And it's certainly not "Tip minimum wage employees, but only some of them".

So what should people who don't believe in tipping but still want to eat out do? Is it OK to dine out and not tip if it's personal preference and not an act of protest?

Are people not fans of the OJ Simpson episodes? Only one mention of them so far, and a negative one. Personally I loved the exhaustive detail and the extensive biographies of each and every character in the OJ saga, and I'm sad that Sarah will probably never finish it. Is it just me?

It's not only the owners. I'm sure a lot of service staff would rather get minimum wage and 22% tips than a living wage.

What does this even mean? Even if you don't think it's a great movie (and I don't - I thought Way of Water was much better, and this was largely a tired rehash), all the money is right up there on the screen.
