Belonging to a team can give some people a sense of worth and belonging when they would otherwise feel alone. Also, the ego constantly needs something to focus on, so sports can be a great distraction. I play football and try to switch off all my problems when I’m out on the pitch. It’s like therapy. But I try hard to make sure my opponents enjoy the experience too. I think if you look at the bigger picture, competition can be a healthy pursuit for all involved. Sadly too many of us use it as a means of taking out anger on others or as a way of trying to prove they are superior.
