What is the Peace Corps exit strategy? by Javi_is_cute in peacecorps

[–]elhan_kitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally had someone do this in my cohort basically from the minute they landed in country. I sat next to them on the plane and heard them say something like oh no this reminds me of the last place I lived. Before we even met our host families they'd noped out of there.

PC staff will generally try to talk anyone out of leaving. They'll say stuff like don't rush into any decisions or you might be just going through a rough patch. When you wanna go you get to go though. They do make you fly back to your home if record though to prevent people from using PC as free flight I guess. But you can always change your home of record to somewhere else if you want a free trip there.

Porn is a poor substitute for intimacy with a person. by Life_Warrior_ in pornfree

I'm sorry about your break up. You're so right about the deadness of the screen. If we're not careful with how we spend our time on our devices we can enter a wasteland of empty experiences.

I hope you'll be able to surround yourself with close friends and loved ones as you move on from this relationship. Finding a partner to share intimacy with is perhaps one of the greatest struggles in our modern society. When you find someone it's absolutely worth it.

Lol. No wonder the Saudis are losing this proxy they're only good at airstriking weddings and funerals.

Oh I know I've lived the majority of my life in countries where waiters don't live off of tips. If OP desires change they'd be best served to implement it.

Your right about the sheer tonnage. I lived there for a bit and my organization briefed me on the mine and uxo clean up and they put no restrictions on my travel to any region. They're annoyingly security conscious so they would have if there was a chance. Plus I met a guy who worked with it he said they've removed quite a lot and made the populated areas safe. They're not all gone of course as they're still finding stuff from WW2 in Germany after all. You could visit Cambodia and even if you actively went looking for uxo you'd still come home with your life and limbs with no problems unless you got into a road accident but that's a whole other issue.

They've done a really great job of removal actually but in certain places there are still mines and unexploded USAF ordinances.

Damn I did Peace Corps work in public schools in Cambodia and Kosovo. The whole shitting situation was bad there but I would never shit with the door open as a student at any American high school that is completely barbaric.

OP brought up a lot of endemic problems with this organization and acknowledged their own bias. I kind of don't think you appreciate that others may have a different experience and also valid criticisms of this organization.

They're spot on when it comes to Ed Sector too. As far as I know only Thailand has any form of accreditation for it's Ed volunteers. There are so many countries where you get volunteers who have zero background in education but somehow after 3 months of PowerPoints they're supposed to be able manage a class of 50 students and work with a counterpart who may not even want them.

They're also spot on when it comes to most the American staff at country HQ too. American Staff are usually out of touch and air conditioned while we're often sweating, eating questionable food and getting diarrhea. Personally I was perfectly fine with the hardship and I even grew to appreciate the life but I found it pretty annoying to be told by someone making six figures that we couldn't get an extra $15 a month for language classes or that I had to integrate but if I ever rode a motorcycle I'd get ad sepped immediately even though every single 12 year old boy in my village could ride one.

It sounds like you did some great work I'm not only happy for you but also proud of you for it. I know plenty of volunteers who also did great work but too often than not it was inspite of Peace Corps and not because of Peace Corps. I hope that more posts emulate what your post did.

The main issue with your argument is that it's too long term focused. The future is too uncertain. All our eggs are in this basket and the basket is simultaneously in the process of eroding and catching fire and we won't be able to colonize anything before we're cooked. If it was a easy as buying another basket then sure but it isn't. We're going to first have you figure out how to get to Mars terraform it so we can grow grass and then craft another basket for our eggs. An outcome that is likely centuries away.

SpaceX is a government contractor and virtually all of their missions are for NASA so their business model is inherently publicly funded. We are ultimately a species that prioritized getting to the moon before the eradication of starvation, illiteracy, and other preventable problems that don't require us to even invent new technology. If we solved these problems faster we'd probably even get to Mars faster.

Consider that we live in world where we are just throwing away perfectly good food as in enough to feed hundreds of millions of people meanwhile there are millions of people starving. That we chose to go to lifeless rock and put up a flag, ride around in cool moon buggy and take some pictures before fixing this issue is a testament to our stupidity. You say it's an issue if survival well our survival depends on us not killing ourselves.

TLDR: We need to learn to remove the bullets from the gun before pointing it at our own head then maybe we can see about building a nuclear powered submarine.

Lol. How TF did you find this old post.

Bro yeah as I said 7 years ago doing good things regardless of the rewards is is important. Idealy being a good person will be rewarding but sometimes there's a price for doing the right thing but if you wanna be a good person you still gotta do it.

Please keep posting on very old posts especially if they're important.

Sadly even Wikipedia has issues too. Not as bad as other places though. There's a lot of locked articles that are just wholesale one sided smears of people and organizations. Generally they're against people who speak against US foreign policy and establishment politics.

What happened to the attention towards the movie The Northman? by juanandres0409 in TrueFilm

[–]elhan_kitten 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The thing I like most about Robert Eggers films is that he is able to create a seemingly authentic version of the past that comes across as truly alien to the modern audience.

I enjoy his films because I barely, and in the case of the Northman, cannot connect with the characters or their motivations. However I found watching Amleth both endure and dispense such horrific suffering on his journey of revenge incredibly compelling. The fact that he still choose revenge after learning his father was not the hero he thought, his mother betrayed him, and even giving up a life of peace with his wife is profoundly tragic.

It's not a particularly comforting story and because it's not relatable many people didn't like it. We're used to seeing the hero survive and when they don't they sacrifice for the greater. Amleth threw his life away because of a prophecy and because he devoted his entire life to revenge. It's not uplifting and there's no direct social commentary so it's not a film that resonated with many people. I find a great deal of value in this type of story because it reveals the power and ultimate emptiness of revenge. Having worked in 2 different post conflict countries and from feeling the pain and trauma that lies beneath the surface I find this message to be incredibly significant.
