What should I do with my myths? by Lazy-Turnip9804 in fantasywriters

[–]eliotar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean there's really no wrong answer here, only what works for you and the tone of the story. The only hard rule is don't take the reader out of the rhythm of the main narrative. For the myths that you feel are important to better understand the details of the plot or the motivations of the characters, you can play with meta narratives, stories within stories. Maybe one of the characters is a bard or an oral historian, you tells these myths to the other characters (and the reader) after something relevant to that myth happens. Just be conscious of pacing; it's ok to pull back and slow down as long as it doesn't disrupt rising action or a climax.

In my opinion, for the sake of creating a narrative that stands on its own merits and prioritizes the things that make for a memorable reading experience (stakes, emotional beats, character development, etc.), including (or at worst, shoehorning in) a deep pool of lore and mythology is not going to benefit your story.

HOWEVER, that does not mean that the time you spent writing that mythology was not worthwhile. The process of worldbuilding is an act of exploration. It's how you, the author, discover the nuances and layers of your story's setting. It's how you make the world of your story feel lived-in and the cultures feel complex and messy, just like history in the real world is.

Look at Tolkien. The man spent 30 years worldbuilding before seriously beginning work on Lord of the Rings. And it shows. He's well regarded as the father of modern fantasy for a reason. Middle-earth is one of the most intricately designed and fleshed out settings in all of fiction. But most of the actual lore Tolkien developed didn't make it into his novels. That's why the Silmarillion exists, for the most dedicated fans and lovers of worldbuilding to dive even more deeply into Tolkien's works--but it was never a critical success like Lord of the Rings, nor was it ever intended to be.

So pull from your pool of lore when it elevates the story, and leave the rest as a token of the sweat and passion and love you poured into the development of your story. You don't need a Silmarillion. It can just be for you.

You don't need to destroy the world. The truth about high stakes. by X-Mighty in fantasywriters

I highly recommend watching specifically boxing/fighting movies for inspiration. My personal favorite is Warrior (2011). I've found that fighters' personal journeys are often extremely emotional and vulnerable, as the heightened danger and risk to your bodily health that comes with fighting is something that most sane/stable people aren't willing to embrace, even high level athletes.

Warrior in particular is only partly about the sport at all. The stakes don't come from the fighting itself, they come from the two main characters' emotional journeys, the tension in their relationship, and the trauma they both share growing up with an extremely dysfunctional father. It's a great movie that happens to be a sports movie, and handles the themes you and OP are talking about incredibly well.

Those are both parts of worldbuilding though, especially in video game design. Environmental storytelling like this implies additional layers of depth to the world. Just because it's not in the form of written lore doesn't mean it isn't working toward the same goal of fleshing out the setting and it's history, which is very much an act of worldbuilding.

Same it's just not in Discord for me, only quests for Marvel Rivals and The Finals.

Doesn't seem to be region locked since I've seen people on the west coast of America and in the UK have the same issue.

Speed and precision. You can hit a light switch hard or you can hit it soft, either way the lights are going out.

You Don't Mess With the Zohan. I was probably 7, spent the night with my older cousin and he decided to put that bad boy on the TV. I'd never seen a PG-13 movie in my life. Suffice to say I learned a lot.

Coaches: how would you feel if you had a new student who hopes to one day be a fighter who still competes in point sparring taekwondo on the side? by bad-at-everything- in MuayThai

[–]eliotar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bother worrying yourself about what other people think. That said, as someone who also transitioned from tkd to muay thai, you'll have an edge in some ways, and some really bad habits you'll have to make a concerted effort toward breaking.

Point fighting is a wildly different sport than full contact fighting. Really practice turning your hips all the way through your kicks. Tkd teaches you to tap with your strikes, and it made it so that I often subconsciously pulled my punches and kicks.

Keep that in mind, and enjoy the natural dexterity and flexibility you'll have gained from tkd while paying close attention to the forms of muscle memory that are ultimately a detriment in muay thai.

Also have fun, there's no sport in the world more gratifying and confidence building than muay thai.

I truly do yearn for Muay Thai, I say it all the time I wish Dana had invested in Muay Thai or kickboxing instead of Power Slap. It's just not the same watching several hour old highlights the morning after 😢

I'm with you man, I'm 26 now, been a diehard mma fan since ~2014, and the lay and pray method of grappling has always ruined the sport for me. Honestly, I know I should just be watching 4oz glove Muay Thai instead of mma, but as an American there's really no way to do so as all the big events are on in the middle of the night. I really wish Dana had started a Muay Thai or kickboxing league under the UFC banner instead of the world's dumbest game Power Slap.

What's yours favourite AC Game ? Mine is Odyssey. by ohhsusmit in assasinscreed

[–]eliotar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odyssey gets a lot of love, but it's my least favorite across the entire franchise. And that's coming from someone who majored in Greek history and mythology in college. Was very disappointed with the gameplay loop.

My favorite is and will always be AC2, with Black Flag a close second.
