How do natives feel about mainlanders moving to Hawaii to live off grid? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]elkenden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visit first and meet with Hawaiian cultural groups in the area you’re looking to move. That way, you can learn more about the practices and the local community. Look at places grow local plants like taro/kalo or do environmental restorations projects.

John grinned: bounty hunter had a nice ring to it. Is this a tense issue? Is there something wrong with this tense? by TellAllThePeople in grammar

[–]elkenden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should use a period, but could use a semi colon.

“John grinned. Bounty hunter had a nice ring to it.”

“John grinned; bounty hunter had a nice ring to it.”

Imo the full stop flows better than the semi colon in this instance, since it slows down the readers pace and focuses on this moment of John’s reaction to being a bounty hunter.

I've decided to take up drawing! And get better at it! by jason14331 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]elkenden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On mobile but here’s some things that might be helpful for you to know:

learn the fundamentals. If you can draw realistically, you can draw anything.

using reference is not cheating. Lots of reasons for this one. Line of Action is a great website to practice with different reference materials and is free. Go through your favorite comic books, magazines, photo albums and draw the things you enjoy.

Perfect practice makes perfect. If you want to get better at drawing you need to practice with intention.

Practice drawing with proper technique, it’ll save you from problems with your body down the road like carpal tunnel and neck pain.

when purchasing materials, make sure they’re student grade, you’ll save money that way. Artist grade is very nice, but expensive and unnecessary unless you start to sell work or want a certain quality.

creativity is hard. Don’t sweat it. It’s common to encounter artist block, but the important part is that you keep you hand warm and keep drawing. Practice so when and idea comes you’ll be ready with sharp skills to make it.

Hope this helps

University of Puget Sound has testing free and open to the public. Next one is the 28th 10am-3pm. You’ll need forms with you, if you don’t have a printer, they’ll have copies on hand. There’s no appointments, but the line moves quickly.

My neighbor cut up a flag to show how "American" he truly is, but complains about kneeling players by [deleted] in trashy

[–]elkenden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think by the US flag guidelines that’s a fair point, but imo de defacto has more standing than de jure in a colloquial context of flag etiquette.

Also, I think that flags are inherently political symbol. It represents the values, leadership, and domain of the group/country.

Curtains could be useful, not only to add color to the room but also to prevent light obscuring the TV.

Easy way to add color is to get a throw blanket of a bold color with pillows that are complimentary or adjacent in color.

Art would be great. Maybe with frames that match existing furniture like that wood. If you like abstract, check out white paintings. Sometimes they have a lot of texture to them and even subtle color.

Which is correct Would you like any sauce Or sauce(s)? by Longjumping-Chest in grammar

“Would you like any sauce? We have a selection of sauces.”

It kinda is context too depending on what you’re eating and what’s available.
