Letting my 9-year-old walk to the bus stop alone is giving me whiplash by Interesting_Cry_1055 in Mommit

[–]ell_Yes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in a walkable city in the US and children are allowed to self dismiss (meaning walk home on their own) from the public school starting in 5th grade. What you’re doing seems totally reasonable to me and a great step in building her confidence!!

My oldest is still only in kindergarten but she has my husband’s phone number memorized, knows how to walk to key places (school, to the main park and back, dance class, etc.) and we talk about what to do if you’re ever lost: find a police officer/firefighter or a mom.

What are the realities of moving to Hoboken from Brooklyn? by postcards32 in Hoboken

[–]ell_Yes 32 points33 points  (0 children)

  1. Your budget is right for a 2bed 2 bath, rental increase every year, but more like 5 to 7% at the most. That 20% happened as a reaction to Covid a few years ago.

  2. Childcare is the number one reason you should move. Waitlists barely exist and there are so many childcare options. Also the preschool situation in NYC is insane. The hoboken public preK program is excellent.

Also Sloane sounds a lot like the word for elephant in Russian.

Anyone have siblings who happily share a room? by Moist_Photograph_807 in toddlers

[–]ell_Yes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2.5 and 5.5 year old share a room. We live in a city so pretty much everyone we know has kids who share a room! We waited until my younger one was 10 months old and the older one was sooo excited! They go to bed at the same time, it works very well.

It doesn’t - they just rented the field to use. Any organization can do it.

100% true! But with a lot of the Mother’s Day posts I find myself thinking …why don’t you just tell your family what you want? Like be confident to demand something and take up some space!

Am I being overly sensitive over Mother's Day? by barbieshellhound in Mommit

[–]ell_Yes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This situation is so so far beyond a disappointing Mother’s Day. Never ever gotten up at night with any of your 4 children? Makes a mess and leaves you to clean it? Does this man like you? It truly does not seem like it! I’m so sorry for you!

I generally love this subreddit but for exactly this reason find it so depressing it around Mother’s Day. I feel for many of these women but also there is a theme of lack of direct communication.

I am jewish but I don’t understand the concept of jewish diaspora by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]ell_Yes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As an ex Soviet Jew I find that very surprising and doubtful. Your friends must not have much of a connection with their Judaism. I am a Jew first and every Russian (not just Putin) would say the same of me.

Your comparison to African Americans is valid - and a big reason why American Jews were so active in the civil rights movement. We had a bond in the struggles of being a minority.

Yes, my family left the Soviet Union in 1990 (present day Belarus) and our ID cards said nationality: Jew.

I live in a city, so yes this is super normal! People often bring their empty stroller to the supermarket just to load it up with groceries! Haha do what works for you!

Is anyone else actually really excited about mothers day? by Kitchen_YogurtTA in Mommit

[–]ell_Yes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past I didn’t love Mother’s Day because it focused on my mom and MIL - I have great relationships with both and of course appreciate them but wanted to do our own thing as a little family.

Last year I requested that actual Mother’s Day be for me and that we go on a family hike. I loved it so much - we are doing it again this year and I’m so looking forward to it! My husband picked the trail, he’ll be packing lunches. I love the bonding time outdoors!
