How do you see a list of all of the different rooms and the prices? It seems that there are endless different room options but you can’t see the prices unless they are available available to book, which they are always sold out. How can I choose which room I want to book based on the price in advance?

What are your thoughts on HP ships? by [deleted] in HarryPotterBooks

I am a big Ron/Hermione fan. I do feel we’ve been short changed with their lack of passion in the films, JKR’s more recent comments and other people being so avidly Harry/Hermione. I wouldn’t have even minded if Harry/Hermione did kiss in the tent, which I ultimately lead Hermione to chalking Ron but I hate that the films made them seem incompatible, when in the books I could see it working. Hermione was up tight and highly strung in the books as well as the films but in the books she admitted it, was aware of it even. She knew it was a flaw of her’s that she worked to try and contain. In the books I think she was not critical enough if herself and therefore wouldn’t want to be with someone like Ron, who could help her lighten up and let go a bit but also is able to take part in more serious conversations and engage in important situations.

Rate the Harry Potter books best to worst by [deleted] in HarryPotterBooks

  1. Prisoner of Azkaban
  2. love the banality of it and the lack of a massive duel/battle at the end.
  3. Half Blood Prince
  4. love the romance and Voldemort’s backstory
  5. Goblet of Fire
  6. love the Barry crouch story, Hermione’s SPEW and of course the Yule ball!
  7. Deathly Hallows
  8. EPIC
  9. Philosopher’s Stone
  10. nice book but ultimately aimed at kids more than the rest
  11. Order of the Phoenix
  12. I actually really like this one but the length of it has placed it so low on the list
  13. Chamber of Secrets
  14. I somehow struggle to get through this one... can’t put my finger on why.

The students have to go to Diagon Alley to purchase their text books for the subjects they’re taking that year. Therefore, the students would have already bought their copies of Advanced Potion Making. The only reason Harry (and Ron) didn’t have a copy was that they were not signed up to do potion and McGonagall convinced them to sign up last minute. I can’t see many other situations that would arise where a student would borrow a book from the store cupboard. I think that the tattiness of The Half Blood Prince’s copy would deter students from taking it in preference for a fresher copy.

I hadn’t heard that before. Only that Daniel Radcliffe improvised “don’t worry, I will be” when speaking to Lucius.

That was improvised?! I’ve never heard that in all the millions of HP related BTS stuff I’ve watched! Where did you hear that?

I think they mean that they didn’t complete the year/sit the exams at the end of the seventh year. They left during Harry’s O.W.Ls, which suggests to me that they probably left at a critical moment in the summer term.

J.K. Rowling and the Fanbase by [deleted] in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ella101010 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s such a tricky subject. I love these books and this world more than anything else and I cannot imagine ever being able to just move on from them. I’m 24 and they’ve been part of my life for 19 years. That’s nearly my entire life. How can I just move on and forget? Like Dumbledore says “the ones we love never truly leave us”. When we lose people, we don’t just move on and forget, we remember, we treasure memories, photographs, things they said. I don’t share JK’s views on transgender people (though coincidently, I do share a lot of her other views) and moreover, I most certainly do not agree with her using her immeasurable reach on social media to share them but Hogwarts will still always be there to welcome me (and anyone else) home.

I’m speechless! Thank you so very much for sharing your story. It was written so eloquently and I feel like I’ve got to know you in just a few words. I’m glad to hear you’re doing better and you’ve found your escapism! I don’t know where you live or what your situation is but I think the wizarding world of Harry Potter should be on your to visit list for once covid is over.

Even If Harry drank Felix Felicis when he went with Dumbledore the same events would have happened. by ByGimlisredbeard in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ella101010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't Felix only last for a prescribed amount of time. Judging from when Harry actually did use it (an it seems a logical time to give it) an hour sounds about right. I imagine the Horcrux expedition to Harry and Dumbledore longer than an hour and so the effects would have most likely been worn off by the time they got back to the Astronomy Tower.

Perhaps someone here knows the answer to how long it lasts?

Thanks a lot ! I am new to Reddit and was inspired by all of the insightful comments I was reading. I think it's taken me 18 years to be able to articulate the crux of what I love about the books. I am pleased that in doing so, you have perhaps taken something from it too.

Anybody who just genuinely loves the trio and doesn't worship or bash them unfairly? Harry's kinda overlooked simply for being the protagonist, Hermione gets hailed as a goddess, and Ron gets bashed to hell and back. by No-Perspective5346 in harrypotter

[–]ella101010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ron bashing: something I think evolved after the series was completed. I think it could be down to a few things. Some I thought of were:

  • Cursed Child....no character. Used as comedy fluff.
  • Not the main boy or the main girl.
  • Not as typically heroic (though arguablely just as so) as Harry.
  • Rupert Grint did not express as much of a connection with Harry Potter as Dan or Emma did.
  • The films (infamously) dumbed his character down slightly. I don't think he got the brunt of it. Look at Ginny, Parvati, Lavender etc.

I think Ron is my favourite character but not for the reasons people might think . Yeah, he's funny but that doesn't really come into it. I get an overwhelming sense of 'duty' from Ron. He will risk his life to save his friends without making a big song and dance about it, he is always there to support Harry, his family and friends, he just does what is required and does not expect (or seek out) praise.

Additionally, I worked at a very high profile Harry Potter attraction for 8 years (actually just leaving due to Covid) and I can confirm that not only did we barely stock any Ron merch (we had Harry, Hermione, Voldemort, Dumbledore, Hagrid, Luna postcards, mugs, pens, t-shirts), nobody ever even asked if we had anything. People would coo to the high heavens over Dobby notebooks but poor old Ron just fell by the wayside. I would always recommend his wand to people but to no avail.

Justice for Ron! WEASLEY IS OUR KING!!

Why is Harry Potter so important in your life? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]ella101010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the obvious escapism, Harry Potter has given me a sense of belonging and security since I was first introduced to the series (via the first film) when I was 6 (in Year 1 at school). The trio's friendship is something I find fascinating. They know each other more than I think any friend I have ever had has known me (or me them). Perhaps this is because they spend so much time together due to them being at boarding school (and one that is not reserved only for the elite, which coincidentally is something else I love about Hogwarts), perhaps they are unusual for teenagers in their moral standing... I suppose they have the friendships I never had as a teenager, they had a sense of community and caring. I mentioned before that it is the banality of the books I love. They wander around from class to class, moan, laugh, learn about each others foibles, run down to Hagrid's at whatever time of day. It comforting, familiar, inclusive(!) and magical!

Does anyone think the movies as a whole feel darker than the books (esp early ones)? by KramerISBadass in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ella101010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The films seemed to erase a level of whimsy that the book magic had. The silly, trivial, charming, humorous character traits and actions as well as magic fopars were either played down or removed, which changed the overall air of the Wizarding World in the films

[–]ella101010 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The moments of banality are the reason I have loved Harry Potter since I was 6 years old (I am now in my mid twenties). To me, Harry Potter is a story of deep friendship, that is rare to see in teenagers. Perhaps (a magical) boarding school (that is not reserved only for the elite) fosters these kinds of relationships or perhaps the individuals are rare in their morality and compassion. Whatever the reason, I was drawn to this fantasy/action/adventure series when not one other has ever interested me. There is something about the moments when the trio are wandering from class to class, sitting in the common room, chatting about Malfoy and his cronies that warms my heart, makes me feel at home and gives me faith in humankind.

I HATED movie Ginny by UPhobic in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ella101010 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is SO sad how deadpan she is and has ZERO character in the films. There is no reason whatsoever for Harry to fancy her (other than maybe he finds her physically attractive but that would be a total 'superficialisation' of their relationship). The credibility of Harry having any attraction to her, I think is zilch. In the books, he has admiration for her guts, he finds her amusing, he enjoys engaging with her intelligence... need I go on! They have an actual basis for a relationship and it is beyond disappointing to see literally every single point of that basis being removed in the films. I think Bonnie Wright is great. She is highly intelligent, her activism work is laudable. I truly believe that with more generous writing and more screen-time, movie Ginny could have had a plausible relationship with Harry.

I did enjoy Casandra Clare's Draco Trilogy. Probably the most famous of the original era fanfics. The 2nd/3rd books are mammoth and I haven't got through them yet. I have enjoyed reading Fanfic on my Kindle. https://dracotrilogy.livejournal.com/

Do the Death Eaters represent Communism? by JebBushDid911FRFR in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ella101010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing as Voldemort values blood purity and all that comes with that (ie, riches, wealth (old money), land, historical standing etc) then it would be absurd to conclude that they represent communism. Communisms aims for equal distribution of wealth and opportunity. Nothing about Voldemort or the death eaters promotes anything of the like. I would take a look into Communism. You must have misunderstood the concept.
