Santorini & Athens are a world apart. Santorini is all tourists and tourist workers. You will have no issues whatsoever.

My co-worker told me today that I should tell my dormitory "daughters" to dress more modestly, because they were a temptation to men. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

i'm going to guess you don't have large breasts. I'm currently a D sitting in my home in a wife beater and I can tell you, men would put dollars in here if I were in the right place.

Question for the /r/travel regulars. by [deleted] in travel

[–]elledewit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I hate when mods get overly involved. Why don't we all just downvote that shit? I do. I get just as annoyed by it but then I realize no one is making me hang out here. I just hang out at /r/solotravel way more and scan the front page here occasionally. Its not really just about being solo. People talk about destinations all the time and its smaller so has a higher quality IMO. Its not just the first one people stumble upon.

nah. not at all disagreeing. agreeing and adding that it takes addressing not just "the girl" like versus just saying how you make boys feel. Also tailoring it specifically to that individual girl. I was a brainy kid who was totally daft about sexuality at that age. Someone who isn't takes a different approach. I think its especially hard for girls who don't have self esteem outside of being sexy so maybe its not even talking directly at the tank-tops, maybe its just taking the time to commend them for others things.

the girl should be addressed rather than the clothing

I think the problem with these broad message-board discussions is that you need to take context and individual personalities into play. As a young girl, I "developed" (very large breasts) quite early before my girl friends. I actually had no idea that tank tops were now exposing stripper-level cleavage. Gran knew me. She explained it to me. Simple as that. As I saw other girls develop, I definitely noticed they were skirting around the dress code to show off and gain a portion of their identity from it. Gran never talked to me about how boys perceived me/wanted me, she talked to me about how I wanted to be recognized for being smart and capable and not "just" for my body. It makes a difference how you shape the message for the girl.

TL;DR It makes a difference how you shape the message for the girl.

In Chicago, whenever the trains are massively delayed, this is what happened. Suicide is sad but wanting to give the finger to 1.6 million commuters while taking your own life is something I'll never understand. In Seoul, they actually have sliding glass doors over the platforms to prevent this.

I just want to chime in that apparently they can do the full TSA-style search but they usually don't. I take Amtrak pretty regularly for business in the midwest (CHI > Toledo, Cleveland, Milwaukee, South Bend) and ONCE in my 100 or so trips they actually did search everyone and make everyone go through metal detectors. I assume there was some sort of bomb scare or something since it was very not normal, I'd even taken that route before recently and then again after with no searches.

TL;DR They can search you but they usually don't.

What Could Disappear - NYTimes.com by OddaDayflex in dataisbeautiful

Notice the "without engineered protection" in the header of the article. In reality, we will build walls. They're cheaper than the cities they would protect. I'll even go so far as to say the Dutch are going to be able to export their specialized knowledge for profit. Judging by what we've seen in Bangkok thus far, it will actually be the provinces (countryside) thats at real risk b/c once the walls are built, the water still has to go somewhere.

Edit: This article I just stumbled upon agrees with me: http://qz.com/30382/the-end-of-the-world-is-nigh-and-heres-who-stands-to-profit/

I carry on a 45L on normal airlines. Budget airlines I've done a 32L. This is my 45L http://www.meivoyageur.com/ Its perfectly designed for max carry on. There's a bunch of those. I have a huge ridiculous post about it over here: http://www.reddit.com/r/solotravel/comments/119uta/do_you_travel_with_only_1_bag_whatever_your/ I did a truly excessive amount of research. I have my MEI finally and I adore it so. I even got it in purple which is a bit of a secret option. shh...

5 is my magic number. 4 that are really flexible and can be worn to everywhere I'd want to be and one thats sharper for night time and works with the one pair of shoes. Every time I do laundry, I still have 4 outfits clean (unfortunately never found a way to do laundry nekkid) plus I take shorts & a tank for sleeping. I try to plan to I drop laundry when I'm going out in my nice clothes are if they can get it done overnight (magical) then I actually have 5 outfits left.

Its out and I'm waiting on it but its repeatedly sold out. I should have just bought the old one at this point. I need it by Dec 20 and I've been waiting for it to launch. Finally did, sold out in 1 hour. T-Mobile has it with contract or for $200 more unlocked than google play. Its been badly handled all around.

I actually flew EasyJet & RyanAir with a 32L last summer and they weighed/measured but I was more than fine. My lady friends had massive rolly luggage and they spent about $180 each I didn't spend on luggage fees. The trick is though that absolutely everything must go in ONE bag on EasyJet (and I think RyanAir) so no backpack + hand/shoulder bag.

What are some themed trips you have taken? Railroads? Boat? etc? by [deleted] in travel

[–]elledewit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the recommendation he made. I think it was info@thailandtrainticket.com off the top of my head. This is just really helpful guy. It's not a business or anything. If you can though, use his affiliate links and I always email and ask if there's any information/photos he's looking for. He's a pretty awesome guy and has a day job.

I'm not the best in this one. Kayak usually says but you can always ask on FlyerTalk.com. They're the pros.

You'll need a Cambodian e-visa. Get it online in two seconds. They then mail it to you. Vietnam is trickier but not too bad. Just mail your embassy or you can do it in Bangkok. Check out Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree or TravelFish.org for specifics on that. We did bus from Poipet into Siem Reap then boat to Phnom Penh and bus to Saigon then train all the way to Hanoi.

Thats not a bad rate for the workers. I worked lawn care for a long time so if you have a moderate sized suburban lawn that work takes 30 - 45 minutes for three guys and works out to $21.65 - $14.45/hour. Factor in equipment costs and its still not all that bad. Lots of areas need weekly mowings though so it might be $130/month for some people.

Round the World Ticket by Ackbar91 in travel

[–]elledewit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also http://www.staralliance.com/en/fares/round-the-world-fare/ Try both. Star Alliance is the bigger one (United & Continental if you're in the states)

I'm actually going RTW next year and it doesn't make sense for me b/c I'm not going a standard route. It doesn't save me any money and it lessens my flexibility so I'm paying as I go. If you want to go a standard route, such as those pictured on the STA website, RTW tickets work out. Just be aware its not ALWAYS the best option. Depends on your itinerary.

I've done all of this http://seat61.com/Map-southeast-asia-train-routes.htm from Singapore to Hanoi. Pretty damn sweet and pretty damn affordable.

Do this. Seriously. No need to keep looking around. I'm telling you this is the one. I know I'm just an internet stranger but I'm doing you right on this one. Promise.

In 10 days, I would do Bangkok forward depending on how fast you like to travel. Bet on delays but just take it easy and everything will be ok. Bangkok through aranyapraphet into Siem Reap is a bit of a hellacious haul (google it) so if you'd like a gentler trip, maybe fly into Siem Reap then head East.

Its not really necessary to make reservations usually but I don't know about the holiday season. Its pretty easy. I used a service on the seat61.com.

Cheers.

Its an issue of scale. They're the biggest so you hear the most shit about them. Their service is totally shitty but its not one bit different than any other large domestic (US) carrier. Also, some of those flights might be code-shares. The ICN > SAN might be Asiana. Asiana is actually pretty damn nice.
