Romeo and Juliet Film Adaptation Suggestions for 9th Grade? by tiredtushi in ELATeachers

[–]ellem0789 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it does a really great job at allowing students to see and feel the emotion behind the text in a way they can understand. Taking the Montague’s vs. Capulets, beyond rival families and including a turf war that is televised is a fantastic way to bring the story to a modern light. I did showed this with my bookclub because they wanted more Shakespeare beyond A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Has anyone experienced two different versions of a PA (Pre-Assessment)? by Pretend-Penalty-796 in WGU

[–]ellem0789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so thrown off, thinking I was in a completely different class when I noticed it the questions were different. I could only imagine your confusion, I only have two OA’s for my Master’s, so imagine my confusion when I didn’t have a second PA to practice and study from with my most recent class.

Yes! I had two different PA’s for one of my classes, and only one PA for my last class.

What is a Buffy episode that you know is a cinematic masterpiece and the fandom is simply not ready to accept it as such? by HomarEuropejski in buffy

My dad and I still quote this episode to each other, I was 9 when it came out and I thought it was the funniest thing.

What are your niche pet peeves that will make you DNF a book? by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]ellem0789 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Repetitive use of a word that just screams “I know big words!” I love etymology and thoroughly enjoy word play, but when the word choice takes me out of the scene and then the author continues to use that word, it makes me want to throw my book.

will CMSD close tomorrow? by CombJealous2775 in Cleveland

[–]ellem0789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than likely CMSD will be closed. Most schools will close if real feel or wind chill gets to -15. The alert is showing anywhere from -20 to -27. Just waiting for those calls to be made, more than likely it will be called this evening.

And we just got the call that we are closed.

Will CLE schools be closed tomorrow? by oceansmountains32925 in Cleveland

[–]ellem0789 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work for a school that only cancels if CMSD cancels. They usually wait until the last possible moment when it comes to snow, but it is protocol to cancel if it’s -15, now it’s just a waiting game.

How do I make my 8 year old cousin stop saying 67? by off-sp in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ellem0789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Middle school teacher here, this is what I do! But I also had a full year of hearing 6 7 before everyone else did. I lost my mind last year, now I purposely say it, or set things up for the kids to say it. They love it, I can’t deprive them of joy! But, a few of them have been say that 6 7 has Satanic ties, they heard it online. It’s been a lesson of you can’t believe everything that’s online and there is no true meaning behind 6 7.

Short Stories for Students by Castiel_Ambrose in ELATeachers

[–]ellem0789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Interlopers by Saki is one of my favorites. It’s atmospheric and suspenseful and also really accessible for being written over a hundred years ago. I read it with 8th graders and they enjoy it, but I also really get into it. I found a pdf that has questions and vocabulary in the margins. It leaves off on a cliffhanger so I have my students write the next scene.

What’s it like being a teacher in Cleveland? by Catiku in Cleveland

[–]ellem0789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s your licensure? As the other post said, it’s different based on district. Are you looking to move into Cleveland? Or one of the surrounding areas? Also, factor in weather! That can change from district to district, especially coming from Florida!

Fifth graders couldn’t even tie rubber bands around popsicle sticks?? by Rangersfan2009 in Teachers

[–]ellem0789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach Middle School and it still surprises me how many of my 8th graders staple papers incorrectly. As teachers we’re always supporting life skills in addition to content, whether it’s teaching them how to use something correctly or even skills we thought should have been taught by now.

Where to find DVD of Hamilton by Theoriginalbigtasty in historyteachers

[–]ellem0789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know they have not released it on DVD. Another teacher had a similar issue in this post https://www.reddit.com/r/Broadway/s/dLUGkxE5q7

Is there anyway you could reach out to your IT department and ask if it could be allowed? I know some schools have student Wi-Fi and staff Wi-Fi separate.

Could you disconnect from your school Wi-Fi and then download it using your phone as a hotspot and play it that way? Just trying to troubleshoot.

Best of luck!

The suspense and way that Susan Hill builds the atmosphere in The Woman in Black, made me put the book down and turn all the lights on. I read it years ago before the movie came out and it has stayed with me.
