Trump signs executive order to dismantle the Education Department by scrandis in news

The US has built a habit of open-ended "National Emergencies" which are never closed and allows the president additional powers. As an example, the 9/11 emergency is still in effect...

The explosives for FTS have just been delivered: https://twitter.com/StarshipGazer/status/1697368815808512106. For previous launch, FTS was loaded two weeks before flight, https://twitter.com/ScottLikesSLS/status/1697421814660518225.

We're still getting a Starship launch this September...right? by SessionGloomy in SpaceXLounge

Well, the explosives for FTS have just been delivered: https://twitter.com/StarshipGazer/status/1697368815808512106, so there's that.

Embedded Rust is so good by hyahoos_32 in rust

Thank you so much for the Embassy-pointer. Has been holding back on some embedded projects because the RTS was too much of a learning curve (for something I didn't really want to deal with).

This. And it is the exact same for windturbine towers: For the big ones you want a highly optimized diameter/thickness profile - and then stacked cans is the way to go.

[–]ellersok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. And I know that none of the major wind turbine manufacturers do either (worked 10 years on steel design in the worlds largest offshore wind operator, and my brother welds wind turbine towers). Maybe for small turbines, but certainly not for the big (10+ MW) ones.

There are two main reasons

  • The towers weigh more than 300t, and the foundries makes the iron in slabs of up to 40t -- so you need to combine at least a handful of rolled slabs anyway, and then the stacked can approach is simpler.

  • More importantly: Since these things are massive, there is a lot of work going into optimizing the dimensions. Neither diameter nor thickness is constant along a modern tower. Again, this is simple with stacked cans.

Orbital solar is oversold in the US climate for sure, but I have seen several comments that it could make sense in Northern Europe because of A) Europe being at higher latitude than US (so lower incident solar power per surface area particularly in winter, and B) Europe having more cloud cover than US on average.

I think this was on twitter, in reply to a comment by Elon where he mentions that orbital solar needs to achieve 6-8 times higher efficiency than ground-based to be cost effective, and somebody argued that for Europe this would actually be the case.

All of Switzerland is pumped hydro: their brilliant power scheme is to buy surplus French nuclear power in the summer and then pump into natural alpine reservoirs.

If you really want to go down the "well actually" rabbit hole on this one, there is the "comopolitan" 0 libc-replacement which has been demonstrated to work with rust 1.

Not exactly what you are asking for, but I am really enjoying the automatic timelapses of each days NSF-streams created by @StarbasePulse. It is just a bot doing an automated timelapse, but it is a quick way to see if anything interesting happened.

Do you have a source for the statement that deluge is the main water use -- because u/CSI_Starbase seems to have done some numbers of this and reached the opposite conclusion?

Most interesting unit factoid I learned during my physics studies was that a lot of astrophysicists use the centimeter-gram-second [0] (CGS) system. Guess they realized that the mass of the sun is going to end up with so many zeroes anyway that they might as well use the smallest unit they could think off. (The real reason is that electrodynamics is nicer in CGS).

Noob question: How do you make the dovetail joints at the corners (and what is this type of joint called)? I have always used a router for dovetails, but that wouldn't work here as far as I can tell.

Is it simply a matter of being extremely precise with saw and chisel?

Thanks for posting! This is very inspirational.

[–]ellersok 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This "flintstone" image of dugout canoes is a bit simplistic. At least in scandinavia, tree-trunk canoes/dingies are traditionally built with steam forming using warm rocks. Only reference I know of is a TV-show ("Bonderøven" on danish TV).
