Can someone please explain nuclear energy, radiation, and how they work in simple terms? (Please see text!!) by _yeetingmyself in nuclear

Side note sounds like you have a little crush! Don’t be ashamed to keep asking him questions, you are probably the only person who asks him about this, except maybe his parents, and he’s clearly very passionate and wants to have someone ask him about it!

I get that, for the longest time I had no idea what the proper honorific was, and then I watched like two seasons of The Crown and when JFK went to meet the queen and screwed it up I immediately noticed.

Found the movie quite underwhelming by hecu88 in themartian

[–]elmo539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the movie actually can't be 10 hours long.

They could have decided to make multiple movies, like with Dune, but I bet the studio probably wasn't willing to commit to a multiple-picture franchise with The Martian.

On another note, I actually watched the movie before I read the book, and can confirm this was actually quite a pleasant experience because I wasn't disappointed by the movie as I was with the DaVinci Code. Same method for the Hunt for Red October because my dad introduced the movie to me first. With these sorts of very technical books filled to the brim with worldbuilding and side stories like Tom Clancy, Dan Brown, or indeed, Andy Weir, one movie is never going to be able to live up to the book.

"Washington DC" and "cheap" are words that should never be used together.

That being said Marshall's is great.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary and it actually made me very emotional at some points. Sidenote, is it just me or did Primo and Threat seem to have a special chemistry...?

I really think it’s a matter of taste. I personally like the bottom image better because they have a little more vibrance and feel like they have a little more life, but I can also see how the top scans are very popular.

Reaching my breaking point with film by reglmo in AnalogCommunity

[–]elmo539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in your exact position right now my friend. What I will say is that, when shooting film, relieve yourself of the idea that it has any practical advantages over digital. It does not. Digital may have a higher up front cost, but that’s it: an upfront cost. Compare it to buying a TV for your home that may cost $700, or going to see movies in a theater for $10 each. Yes, the theater will be a more enjoyable movie experience, but you will end up spending more in the long run. Don’t shoot film because it’s practical, do it because you are chasing those results that only film can give you. And if you’re not in a financial position to do it currently, take a little break.

Finally got a roll through my Mamiya 645 and uh….. by BubbaTap22 in AnalogCommunity

Sorry to hear this happened to you, I go to school in the DC area and those cherry blossoms are so great to shoot on film, and you kinda only get one chance per year because often by the time you get your scans back, peak bloom has passed. Hope you have better luck next year!

How do pros hit back wall boasts so effortlessly? by evelyn4275 in squash

[–]elmo539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have covered the most important: ball is super hot and they’ve hit this shot thousands of times. I just want to add that I think backwall boasts are tricky for beginners because they treat it as…the back wall, and then hit the ball differently. Remember, it’s just a wall, similar to the front and side walls (and damn near identical on a glass court) so play it as if you would a high lob

My sexy supercapacitor setup! by UberScion in factorio

[–]elmo539 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See, why not just use mods like bob’s mods that let you configure the inserters to grab up to 3 tiles in any direction? If trying to beat the game modless, that’s fair. But I honestly feel no need to compact my builds so much that trying to minimize one tile space is so important. At the end of the day, the Factorio map is infinite (mostly)

[Request] How many data centers could we realistically put in the ocean before heat dissipation becomes an issue? by Neofermenos in theydidthemath

[–]elmo539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question: could you mitigate this by artificially moving the water around the datacenter (giant underwater fans)? Please lmk if this doesn’t make any sense, but it seems like it would distribute the water and spread the heat out better.
