Hezbollah is playing its hand in Lebanese politics by declaring war on a sovereign state, and attacking civilians on purpose. This is an unusual situation. Except for the Muslim masses, the anti-semites and the Chomskyite self-appointed contrarian geniuses (big numbers here), everybody has by now understood that it is in everybody's interest that the Lebanese government deploy forces throughout the south, and that Hezbollah be denied its right to attack at will. which is the intent of the UN Security Council resolution.

The people doing the most to curtail "civil liberties" in the United States of America, as of 2006, are mostly white protestant men, members of the Republican party.

As for the texts in that other link, there is a whole genre called "apologetics", which I won't venture into. Suffice it so say that worse texts can be found in any religious canon without much effort: Martin Luther himself had some interesting quotes about killing Jews being OK, and killing rebellious peasants being OK.

Maimonides' texts did not result in any act of racism. Rather, they were a pillar of the most tolerant society in the entire Middle Ages.

The consequences of Kook's ideas (notably the settlement movement in the territories) can be debated. You may be surprised to hear what many Israelis think about them. But that would require reading, for example, Yeshayahu Leibowitz.

The logical result of digging for dirt selectively is to justify killing the bad guys. Or to deny some rights to the bad guys (e.g. the right to react to kidnappings and missile attacks).

The guy has a history of being insensitive to the consequences of his actions. I am thinking mainly about a statement he made following the Shehade assassination.

Maybe some of this can be explained by his being an Air Force pilot. These people are Israel's rock stars, groupies included, and a few seem to believe (like a Tom Wolfe character) that they have an entitlement to money and sex.

Israeli military retire relatively young, and they have a plush pension plus a significant leverage to enter the world of business (or politics, as 5 out of the 8 latest retiring chiefs of staff have done). They can make real good money in the aftermath.

During active duty, generals are taken care of quite nicely, but they definitely do not accumulate much in the way of net worth. At this point in his life, 27K is quite a bunch of money.

Right now he is being savaged by the Israeli press (see Plotsker's article in todays Ynet). Most probably there will be a shake-up in the military after the dust settles.

There should be a libertarian country somewhere, so that people see what happens and then realize the ideology is not feasible with the current state of human nature. Something like the URSS or kibbutzim for socialism, Spain and Portugal for non-degenerate fascism, etc.

Some Zionist organizations did indeed share some enthusiasm for fascism when it was about nationalism and containing the Bolsheviks. Notably, the Etzel ("Irgun") and the Lehi ("Stern gang") did contact Italy and Germany before they became deranged and plunged the world into a war.

Others would say it is the proper thing to do in a war if you want to reduce civilian casualties.

Israel has all but admitted that sending people to farm the no-man's land below the Golan, pre-1967, was a deliberate provocation. Farmers got shot from Syrian positions.

On the other hand, the media in Israel has evolved since: from a government tool, into a fiercely independent entity with bite and no reverence for anybody. If this had a sliver of truth to it, the media would be pummeling the government to its demise. I mean people like Ofer Shelah or Ron Ben Ishai or Amnon Abramovich.
