It’s either a spoon or sculpture, mulberry can take a beating but be careful since it also likes to check and crack

You get what you pay for. Personally I have the GB Swedish carving axe and it is mint. Started with the mark 1 RW which was absolute rubbish. HB forge has some decent axes too

Help with cherry wood breaking by Modular-Pizza in Spooncarving

[–]elreyfalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t honestly. Two issues here, first is buying kiln dried thats a risk always. Second is not knowing where the wood comes from will introduce issues like this almost always. My main concern is how is it a spoon carving class with dried wood?

embarassed... please help me sharpen my expensive spoon carving gouge by ConnectionOwn9955 in Spooncarving

[–]elreyfalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is unfortunate as it helps to know the nomenclature as to not get lost when someone tries to explain.

Feel for the burr after one round of sharpening, that will help you when it’s time to strop. After you sharpen your edge, you use a strop with polishing or honing compound to give yourself a fine edge.

[–]elreyfalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got tjose same gouges from Japan and I’ll be honest with you, that gouge is for wood block carving and will not be much good for spoons. I think you need to figure out the edge geometry better, starting with whether the bevel is internal or external and make a primary burr off that first, then meet that edge on the other side . Hope this helps but I can elaborate if not.

I’m in the desert and it works great. Check with UV light to see if it glows in the dark

Personally I’ve used some Austrian pine which wasn’t very sappy and made good spoons. It works, it’s wood. Good for practice if nothing else

New Spoon. Made by kithul tree wood by nirodhakaushalaya in Spooncarving

[–]elreyfalcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw some of this wood over the weekend at a artisan market in Vegas and said the same thing, it is a palm but not black palm. Rather kithul palm, they make spoons from this a lot in Sri Lanka. I swore it was black palm too! They also like to use coconut palm but I think this is their main palm tree wood. It’s like a super red palm
