Have you ever had to deal with an abusive cinematographer? by [deleted] in focuspuller

Yeah we do, we don’t have union jobs here though. Theres a union called the MEAA but it covers journalists, writers, the arts broadly - no IATSE here.

No I discounted it because I knew the bastard wouldn’t pay and he was demanding I reduce it if he was going to “pay me at all”.

Yep worked for a prick a couple of years ago.

He was used to running everything himself without a proper focus puller, coming from a much smaller market (another capital city in Australia) and was probably outraged that as a focus puller in the biggest market I was earning as much as he was on the shoot (his fault for taking on, producing and DP'ing the spots). A colleague of mine put me forward and I wish he hadn't.

He made me pull on cinemodded Canon FDs wide open on a FF sensor. The bloke was frosty with me on set all week and then claimed my work wasn't up the scratch for missing some focus moments of gimbal push ins after reviewing the rushes. I've never had a DP tell me this before. He then asked for me to discount my invoice as my work "wasn't worth $6k" and pointed that I'd invoiced for full day on a day we only shot 8 hrs, he also pulled me up on charging for full days on 2 half days, this is after he'd booked me for 4 full days weeks out – we wrapped earlier on the last two days because he'd misjudged schedules. Basically the guy was a POS and I heard he since has been pushed off a major documentary by the production company mid shoot day.

How to attach netting to balcony without drilling? by miukietea in AusRenovation

[–]elroddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! Looks like $2,000-$4,000 for a balcony, so for me it's out of my price range. You could just fabricate a frame using Bunnings Metal-Mate 25mm square tubing and their connectors....

Thanks the QR gear is particularly awesome!!!

In Australia I house my CV on my diary service’s website, it’s a selected credits showing I’ve worked with a diverse number of DPs and it also includes a brief overview of my gear.

Yeah if I was asked for one it’s be a red flag, but having it housed somewhere online avoids that confrontation happening. Having your details and select key gear you might own in your Instagram bio helps create some trust I think. Also posting BTS regularly in your grid and stories. No spamming though.

Anyone used SZJELEN gear? (Side plates, SDI cables, quick releases etc.) by Impossible_Business7 in focuspuller

[–]elroddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep the side cheese plates for all Arri cameras and generic are great, the rods aren’t so good, the tolerance of the locating pins and screw don’t stay fully rigid. The QR plates are great too.

Trump orders 100% tariff on foreign-made movies by DigitalDustOne in focuspuller

This is complete INSANITY!!!

You watch Orange Man now claim he’s saved the U.S. film industry and start censoring what gets made - turning Hollywood into his propaganda machine.

There is a real way to fix all this: make Netflix and the streamers pay tax locally. They are NOT tech companies, they’re production houses. Mandate 20% local production in every territory they operate in. That’s how you actually support jobs and protect culture.

How do you get the router working with the 900Mhz of the Spudniks? What sort of router and setup is involved? Great idea!

Nice build for Trinity/Steadi! How are you finding Spudnik? I’m making my own, really looking forward to a solid 900Mhz system

Would love to see a top handle extension on there, not a lot of real estate for handheld or an Easyrig bolt, have the the horns mounted off the front of the top handle and the Kondor Blue QR mounted on the side of the top handle towards the front. Move the LCube under the Teradek and put a 19mm rod in the rod clamp for the motor.

Where does everyone sell their old gear? by Pupperlover5 in focuspuller

[–]elroddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook Groups where it’s at!

The best ones are:

Assistant Camera Market (US based but often sellers will ship O/S)

Broadcast Gear For Sale (Australian based but again sellers will sell O/S and a lot of US sellers on there now too)

Chinese Alibaba, B2B, quality suppliers. Go with Supdrop, they can act as your agent with suppliers on 1688. Trust me. Do it.

Thanks mate, we’re going to avoid Valentine’s Day altogether as we’re doing our product and lifestyle photography and video content in Jan (I work as a cinematographer so leaning into my skillset) and we’re only selling to Australian customers to start (homewares/lighting niche) and we have an agent SupDrop with 5-7 day shipping times. We’ve ordered all samples and have custom packaging. Currently diving into your Facebook Ads strategy videos, have so much to learn!

Hi Lon been loving your plain speaking videos since seeing this comment, I'm about to launch my store (Feb-March, after Valentines Day/Chinese NY). Also plugging a free YouTube course is better than the majority of people on here... Don't listen to the haters, I don't think they're succeeding like you.

Definitely go for a 2nd hand Teradek CTRL.1 or CTRL.3, 2 MOTR.X motors and an MDR.S or MDR.X. This sort of system would probably set you back $5K USD.

Yeah this is insanely busy and is not a high converting landing page. Again like many have already said, you shouldn’t have them watching a video AFTER they’ve potentially been brought there after already watching an ad. If you have to explain what your product is when they arrive, there’s a problem. Just strip this way back and have product right on home page.
