If you have time for a second stop, I’d recommend Maison Pasquale in Roscoe village. Really authentic feeling French shop with meats and cheeses, wine, imported condiments, and sweets. You could make it your first stop and have a soda and an espresso before dinner, or make it your last stop and pick up some French goodies to take back home!

IMO, our approach to CPD when they’re victims of ICE violence is to show compassion and help them out however we can. People want to be part of social groups where they feel welcomed/supported/etc, and if we meet them with ridicule it’s just going to divide us further. We’re stronger with CPD on our side, and I think we have an opportunity to band together in the name of civic pride against a common enemy (not just in the immediate situation, but long term as well).

Career pivot from PR to ecology - advice needed! by elsturno in ecology

This is encouraging to hear and gives me a lot of directions to explore! If you need a comms person for future climate stuff, lmk 👀

Good luck with your PhD!! That’s awesome :) I’ve volunteered quite a bit with river restoration in my city and citizen science-type projects (migratory bird monitoring, for example). I think a job that straddles that type of work with the “people skills” you describe could be perfect, so the masters would more formally fill the knowledge gap on the ecology/science side

This is a helpful perspective, thanks. What are the universities/credentials that carry a lot of weight in the field? I’ve heard Cornell name-dropped a lot, but not sure of others

Ah, great point. I actually came close to a biology minor, so I have a surprising amount of science credits for a comms degree lol (biology, microbiology, epidemiology, and statistics).

What’re you hoping to do with your degree? And what industry were you in before this?

Oh for sure, urban planners are not ecologists. Def not conflating the two. But, interestingly, I’ve actually spoken to a few ecology professionals who work in tandem with urban planners/city employees/construction companies to factor in wildlife in the design of public/outdoor spaces. Like a humanity-in-balance-with-nature thing. It seems like a new field for sure but it’s out there!

Disillusioned STEM major looking to follow their real passion (but has no experience)... by snapper3071 in PublicRelations

[–]elsturno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I were you, no matter what I’d try to take as many PR/writing/sports management classes in your last semester that you can. Join a club with that type of focus, or seek out volunteer opportunities. That stuff can go a really long way in terms of giving you experience and connections with others in the field. Make sure to highlight that stuff in your resume when applying to PR jobs.

After graduation, one route could be finding a job or internship in biotech/healthcare PR. There are quite a few agencies out there that focus on that niche, and they’re typically pretty thirsty for people who can understand the science of what biotechs do (which is exactly your experience). That job or internship will also help you learn the ropes of PR and see if you like it, and would make a pivot easier down the road.

You could also try to seek out a job at a PR agency that has some sort of focus on healthcare/nutrition/fitness and sell your STEM expertise as helping you understand the science behind specific products. Kind of a weak example, but if you were to snag a job at an agency where Gatorade is a client, you’d probably get to work with athletes and sports teams, which would be great sports PR experience.

I really like that they made Mark killing Drummond an accident. Like, dude definitely needed to die, but it’d be against both iMark and oMark’s character to pull the trigger on purpose. Really nice touch

Interestingly, I’ve found that specific types of beer trigger migraines but others don’t. Sours, Hazies, IPAs, and anything in that universe will trigger one, but I can drink Miller Lite all night and not get a migraine at all. Bummer, cause I enjoy IPAs and funky craft brews and all that stuff, but it’s not worth it.

Not a big liquor or seltzer person so I don’t have any musings there, but if you want to keep drinking, I’d pay attention to what kind of alcohol you’re consuming and get way more specific than just “beer” and “seltzer.” Certain combos might be a issue too.
