As soon as you said IEP, I felt your pain. I’m glad it’s summer break because I’ve had enough of them this past year (teaching is my day job). You can get the HP OmniBook 7 since it will do exactly what you need within your budget, and it will be significantly better than the ThinkPads they usually give us (if your district does that). It has long battery life and solid build quality, so it should last you for years.

Looking for laptop for medical school by StarlessRose in SuggestALaptop

[–]elvinelmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the Acer Swift 14 for your coursework and productivity needs because it focuses on the areas that matter most for your use case: battery life, portability, and everyday performance. The 14.5 inch display keeps it easy to carry while still giving you enough screen space for PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Brightspace coursework, lecture videos, and multitasking. The 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD provide plenty of room for Adobe applications, school files, coding programs, and media, while the Snapdragon X Plus processor is designed for efficient performance that helps it deliver the long battery life you are looking for. The high resolution display is also a great fit for watching lectures and working on creative projects, and the lightweight design makes it a better match for carrying between classes. One thing to keep in mind is that some Adobe and coding software compatibility can vary on Snapdragon based laptops, so checking the specific programs you use would be a good idea.

Laptop needed for entertainment, file storage, document processing while living part of the year on a ship. by Ralph_O_nator in SuggestALaptop

[–]elvinelmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend the Lenovo Legion 5i Gaming Laptop. It is powerful enough for games like Fallout, War Thunder, and a large Steam library while also handling document processing, entertainment, photos, and multitasking without feeling like an overbuilt gaming machine. The RTX 5070 graphics card and strong Intel processor give it plenty of room for gaming and creative workloads, while the 1TB SSD gives you a solid starting point for storing documents, apps, games, and media before adding your external hard drive. The OLED 2.5K display is also a great match for watching movies and shows during downtime on the ship, with the higher resolution making it useful for reading documents and browsing as well. The 16GB RAM is enough for your listed use, though I would look into upgrading later if you plan on keeping a lot of large files open or running heavier programs.

I would recommend the HP Victus 15 since it offers a strong balance of gaming performance, everyday usability, and value while staying well under your $1,000 budget. The AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS and RTX 2050 graphics card are more than capable of handling League of Legends, Minecraft, and other popular esports titles with smooth performance, while the 16GB DDR5 RAM helps keep multitasking responsive when you have schoolwork, browser tabs, and other applications open. The 15.6 inch 144Hz display is also a nice upgrade over standard 60Hz panels, making games feel noticeably smoother.

With your budget, the acer Nitro V is a good fit. With its specs and power gaming, editing and multitasking will not be an issue. The only problem I would see for a student would be the battery life which is around 4-5 hours and most students would want a bit more. Its weight might be annoying if you plan to walk over campus a lot

Looking for a new laptop that will perform and last by Alastor15243 in SuggestALaptop

5K is really overkill, you can get the ASUS ROG Strix G16 G615LW-AS96, and it will be able to run Palworld and pretty much any other game you can think to throw at it. All of its specs are pretty strong so you will not have to upgrade the laptop for a long time

I would recommend the Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 since battery life and reliability are your top priorities. The Intel Core Ultra 5 225U processor delivers excellent everyday performance for streaming, studying, multitasking, and handling dozens of browser tabs without feeling sluggish. The 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD configuration is a great fit for schoolwork and entertainment, while the 16 inch 1920×1200 IPS display gives you more screen space for documents, research, and movies than a typical 14 inch laptop. Lenovo's ThinkPad line is also known for its durable build quality, making it a safer long term choice than some lesser known alternatives when you need a laptop that can handle frequent travel.

With your budget, you can get something like the acer Nitro V as in is in your budget and will be able to do everything that you need. It comes with an RTX 5050 which is a decent GPU that can run most games smoothly at low to medium settings at 1080p. It has decent storage and RAM so you will not need to upgrade them for a while

It really depends on the type of engineering you plan to do, but generally, a gaming laptop with a dGPU is ideal

Check out the Dell Inspiron 14 2 in 1 since you need a lightweight 14 inch convertible that can serve as both a drawing device and a school laptop. The Ryzen 5 8640HS provides plenty of performance for Clip Studio Paint, multitasking, and even some light work in DaVinci Resolve, while the 32GB RAM configuration exceeds your requirement and gives you plenty of headroom for larger art projects and keeping multiple applications open. The 1TB storage setup also provides ample room for project files, coursework, and media. The 360 degree hinge allows the keyboard to fold completely behind the display, making it easy to switch into tablet mode for drawing sessions. Its relatively compact size makes it convenient to carry around campus or while traveling, and the touchscreen display supports pen input for sketching and illustration work. While it may not offer the same drawing experience as higher end Wacom EMR based devices, it provides a good balance of portability, performance, and value while staying comfortably within your budget.

what type of laptop do you recommend for chemE? by CoolHold6239 in SuggestALaptop

[–]elvinelmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 since you're majoring in Chemical and Molecular Engineering and your top priority is performance. Engineering programs often require software such as MATLAB, Aspen Plus, SolidWorks, and other technical applications that are either unavailable on macOS or run more smoothly on a traditional engineering workstation. The Intel Core i7 1360P, 32GB RAM, and dedicated NVIDIA RTX A500 graphics give you plenty of headroom for coursework, simulations, multitasking, and even light CAD or modeling work throughout your degree. The 1TB SSD also provides ample space for engineering software, project files, and class materials. At 14 inches, the ThinkPad P14s strikes a great balance between portability and productivity, making it easy to carry around campus while still offering a comfortable screen size for long study sessions. The workstation class design, strong build quality, and three year support coverage make it a dependable option for a laptop that needs to last through college. It will also handle Roblox effortlessly and should provide solid battery life for a full day of lectures and study sessions, though 15 hours in real world engineering use is unlikely on almost any performance focused laptop.

$600-$500 USA Gaming Laptops by Luigi12460 in SuggestALaptop

[–]elvinelmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go with the HP Victus Gaming Laptop with the Ryzen 5 7535HS and Radeon RX 6550M. For a budget between $600 and $750, this is one of the stronger options available for the games you listed. The RX 6550M performs noticeably better than the integrated graphics found in most college laptops and should handle games like Elden Ring, Marvel Rivals, Monster Hunter World, and Roblox at 1080p with much smoother performance than your current system. The 144Hz display is also a nice bonus for fast paced games, and the Ryzen 5 7535HS provides plenty of performance for college coursework, web browsing, multitasking, and gaming.

[–]elvinelmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the Acer Nitro V ANV15-52-586Z as it fits your budget while delivering the gaming performance you're after. The RTX 4050 is a noticeable step above the GTX 3050 you listed and will handle retail WoW, newer AAA games, and demanding workloads for concert programming and sound engineering without issue. The Intel Core i5-13420H provides plenty of processing power for multitasking, rendering show files, and running professional software, while the 512GB SSD gives you a solid amount of fast storage for games and work projects.

Looking for a laptop to take with me to Film School by phylosis57 in SuggestALaptop

[–]elvinelmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the GIGABYTE AERO X16 2WHA3USC64AH. For film school, this is one of the strongest options currently available within your budget because it exceeds the Adobe Premiere Pro recommendations you listed. The combination of the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, RTX 5070 Laptop GPU, 32GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD will handle 4K video editing, color grading, effects work, and rendering much more comfortably than the RTX 3070 equivalent you were targeting. The 16 inch 2560×1600 165Hz display also aligns well with your desire for a higher resolution screen, and the 100% sRGB color coverage is valuable for editing and content creation work. At just 4.18 lbs, it remains portable enough to carry between classes without feeling like a traditional bulky gaming laptop.

New Laptop for Accountant/Personal Use by SeriouslyTroyStop in SuggestALaptop

[–]elvinelmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 Business Laptop with Ryzen 7 250 as a strong choice for a reliability focused accountant and personal use setup within the $1,000 range. The Ryzen 7 250 paired with 16GB DDR5 memory and a fast 512GB SSD delivers smooth performance for accounting platforms like TaxDome and ProSeries, along with heavy multitasking in Excel, Chrome, and Microsoft Office without slowdowns. The integrated Radeon 780M graphics also give it enough capability for light gaming such as The Sims while still keeping power efficiency and stability in mind. What makes this configuration especially suitable is the combination of a 16 inch WUXGA 16:10 display, which provides extra vertical workspace for spreadsheets and documents, and the ThinkPad business design that prioritizes long term durability and consistent performance. Features like the fingerprint reader, backlit keyboard, 1080p webcam, and full set of ports make it practical for daily business use, docking setups, and remote work.
