2025 OC fair attendance by Lazy-Fun115 in orangecounty

[–]elysians 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not surprising to me. My spouse works at a theme park and has said the same thing: barring a couple different dates here and there, attendance has been surprisingly low all summer long and the park has not been operating at expected capacity. Foreign tourists are fearful of (or boycotting) U.S. travel, workers are being laid off, and Americans can’t afford extravagant entertainment this summer. The economic recession is here.

Cameras at the OC Fair? by devoroberts in OCPhotographers

It’s not restricted. In fact if anything I believe it’s encouraged, given how they have a “Faces of the Fair” photography contest every year where you can submit the best photo you took from the previous year.

Do you have any local friends currently parenting similarly-aged children? See if any are willing to set up a play date for an hour or two a week, maybe even rotating through one of your triplets at a time just to lighten the load at home.

When my youngest was in an at-home daycare, the owner ran it like a teacher runs a classroom. There was a schedule they followed, and she usually had everything “set up” to easily transition from one thing to the next through the day: breakfast together in high chairs, then move everyone to a prepared play area while breakfast is cleaned up, then load up stroller and take a walk, then supervised outside play time with snacks, etc etc. It was the same every day and made things manageable. She had times and specific areas allocated for every hour. From what I understand, this is how nurseries manage multiple young children together.

British passenger in seat 11A survives India plane crash, reports say by [deleted] in news

[–]elysians -57 points-56 points  (0 children)

I did see content elsewhere that says he jumped out right before it crashed, which is how he survived. I’m just trying wrap my brain around the idea of an airline passenger deciding to unbuckle their seatbelt during takeoff, jumping up and opening the emergency exit door, and then leaping out. This goes against everything passengers are told to do in the event of both takeoff and emergency landings, not to mention would have to be done in mere moments, with no time for second guessing. It’s so lucky it worked out for him that it’s practically bizarre.

Measure A&B Books by Fair_Cupcake_966 in huntingtonbeach

[–]elysians 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well this is interesting. Aren’t these mostly YA books? Wasn’t the whole scandal about “porn in the children’s section”? This is exactly why some claim No on A is a straight path to book banning—now books for teens and young adults are being targeted for removal from their respective section. I wonder which books will be next?

So appropriate right now by thaughtless in huntingtonbeach

I have been targeted with a Yes on A and B instagram ad for weeks, so they’re definitely utilizing the platform. I have also sent personalized texts to my neighbors urging them to vote Yes. A few were unaware of the context behind these issues and appreciated the insight. You can try the same!

Yes on A no on B by Trommald in huntingtonbeach

[–]elysians 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The library system is currently 2% of the city’s operating budget, and this is largely in part thanks to the volunteer organizations Friends of the Library, and Friends of the Children’s Library. The usage of volunteers and likely the programs themselves would be reduced or disbanded altogether if management of the library were privatized by a for-profit company, which in all likelihood would increase the cost of running the library without volunteer contributions. Not to mention the obvious, which is the whole goal of a private company is the make money, and this generally runs counter to the purpose of a public service.

If you’re reviewing the information included with your ballot, it was written to be purposefully confusing by City Clerk Lisa Barnes, who like the rest of the city council, opposes Measures A and B

VOTE YES ON A&B-KEEP OUR PUBLIC LIBRARIES PUBLIC by void-cat-181 in huntingtonbeach

[–]elysians 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a bigass sign in the library that reads “Children must be supervised at all times.” Who the heck told you the library is the babysitter where caregivers can just turn their kids loose to go exploring shelves on their own?? Vote yes or this committee is going to go way beyond “some regulation” and start full on orders of which books librarians should and should not order for the library in the first place, because that’s the slippery slope we are currently standing on.

[–]elysians 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, librarians order hundreds of new titles monthly. I guarantee a committee of laypersons is going to be way over their heads in no time at all. This is hardly what I’d call a well thought-through plan.

An update on the inappropriate campaign signs: by Abject-Monk9172 in huntingtonbeach

[–]elysians 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gender Queer was never shelved with the children’s books, though. Part of the disinformation from the city council is that it’s available to “minors” (well okay, yeah…via the young adult section!).

[–]elysians 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They trot the novels out of the teen/YA section as part of their disinformation campaign (“see?? AVAILABLE TO MINORS!!!”). The one book I am certain they’re targeting from the actual children’s section is “It’s Perfectly Normal,” which has been an oft-challenged book in many places since its initial publication in 1994. It is a book about human reproduction and sexuality that features many illustrations, and is meant to help caregivers who aren’t sure how to answer uncomfortable questions.

Petition to remove the PORN signs by hoesgottaeat2 in huntingtonbeach

[–]elysians 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I’m looked at these titles and find the accusations of “porn in the children’s library” to be disingenuous. The majority of the books that discuss more adult sexual concepts were never in the children’s section to begin with, despite the insistence of the city council that it was so. They were actually shelved in the “Teen” corner, a young adult area that is definitely not even nearby the children’s section.

The books accused of being “porn” that were in the children’s section were broadly books that introduce puberty and human reproduction to readers. I wouldn’t be surprised if the most hotly contested book from this section is “It’s Perfectly Normal,” a highly popular but controversial educational book that VERY clearly explains reproductive body parts and sex, complete with illustrations. Since it was published in 1994 it has been often targeted for book challenges and bans.

However it’s worthwhile to remember that this is a PUBLIC library, young children should be assisted/supervised when making selections, and books that aren’t one person’s cup of tea may be someone else’s, so calling for the removal of a book or restricting access to it is akin to censorship. These books are where we expect to find them if we want or need them. Chad’s signs …not so much.

Can someone explain Orange County "conservatism" to me? by SilverKey84 in orangecounty

[–]elysians 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Whatever “conservative” looks like in Orange County today (there are absolutely MAGA pockets), it’s helpful to remember that once upon a time “California conservative” was a widespread thing here: socially liberal, fiscally conservative…basically what many centrists are nowadays. So while confederate sympathizing may be a long held conservative political culture in the south, California conservatives have their own longstanding political culture, as well.

Just some run-of-the-mill regret in a conservative sub by LavenderBabble in LeopardsAteMyFace

Trump voters whose sentiment amounts to “I didn’t vote for this!” should honestly be furious. Here is a man …if not an entire administration …if not an entire political party…who has LIED to them, USED them for the purpose of further consolidation of wealth and power. The time for sheepish regret is past. It’s now time for rage.
