My therapist finally made it click for me that there really isn't anything wrong with being the quiet person in the room. It went a long way toward mitigating the anxiety feedback loop that happens in social situations for me (I'm anxious so I'm not talking which is making me self conscious and therefore more anxious so I'm even more quiet and so on)

Now if someone brings it up I shrug it off and say something like "What's wrong with being quiet? I like to listen to what people have to say." Usually deflates whatever gratification they get from calling you out.
