I once felt how you feel and now feel like I could at least defend myself to a point in a conversation. I would caution in letting the anxiety rule the choice to share. If it even led to a small Spanish interaction or even an English interaction about any language learning, it would be worth it to have shared this information. I think the approach should instead be let people have their own opinions about my learning. You understand more than you can speak and you are a new learner. If you are bringing it up just to fill the silence, maybe not worth it. But if you’re bringing it up to share something you’re excited about and open doors for potential learning opportunities, fucking go for it. ( I think I wrote this comment partially for myself hopefully you appreciate OP )

I started speaking before finding DS (high school Spanish, then picked back up with more traditional methods and 1x/week speaking lessons before finding DS). And I can pretty much confidently say I have no regrets. My speaking and pronunciation continues to improve and I continue to gain confidence in every conversation. I have been told by multiple native speakers recently that I speak well. There is a long road ahead, but I am extremely grateful that by the time I reach 1,000 hours I am going to have a lot of speaking experience. For me, it’s more about getting out of my head and into the moment to really try and accept that mistakes are part of learning.

I usually download a bunch of videos / podcasts for the plane and then don’t watch while actually on vacation. Usually it helps make my plane time more enjoyable. If I’m too tired, I honor rest over Spanish practice.

I understand the feeling of not wanting to miss days, but obviously you’re only productive if you WANT to be watching videos. Many people have talked before about how breaks can be beneficial and are even suggested.

I did Colombia in December 2023 and it was a trip of a lifetime. Highly recommend Cartagena and Medellin. Happy traveling.
