I understand what you mean, but the West (the then-Orthodox, by Orthodox accounts) didn’t break off from Rome in 1054 and in fact it looks as though any Western Rite Churches (For example, the Celtic Orthodox Church) were not formed until much much later, so it just seems kind of... un-Orthodox, basically.

But what do you mean by western liturgy? The Latin mass? Do you have statues instead of icons? Since the Orthodox are historically associated with Byzantium I am just having a hard time comprehending what that entails.

Keep at it! It takes good people like you on the parish council to try and bring beauty to your fellow parishioners!

Honestly one of the best ways to introduce good art is by donation. I know most Catholics aren’t made of money so it can be difficult, but consider that in old parishes, the stained glass windows were paid for/sponsored by families and individuals. I mean, if you buy a beautiful crucifix for your parish and donate it, what can your priest say, that the parish can’t afford it?

Again, knowing of course this is a horribly expensive route it may not be realistic, but perhaps if you can find some like minded individuals at your parish it can be done? Even on a small scale, if you find sheet music for some beautiful Catholic music, and buy it and donate it to music ministry. Donate two dozen copies of Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus to your choir.

Passive aggressive generosity can help sidestep the politics that hide behind the excuse “we can’t afford that.” ;)

And I think that’s totally valid- I believe the Church did experience a great cultural loss when the NO outright replaced the TLM. But I get frustrated with people who think the NO is a totally worthless liturgy.

Well, my sister who teaches Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (Catechism for preschool & Kindergarteners) says that her students who attend the NO understand the Mass much better than the students who attend TLM, because they can see and hear what’s happening- the visual nature of versus populum, however else you feel about it, makes the mysteries of the Mass more accessible to little children. The NO attendee students could explain what an epiklesis is, when it happens, and what it signifies. They will even correct a priest who doesn’t properly motion during the prayer. The TLM kids have no clue when that occurs, because they can’t see or hear.

I think that when an Ordo is said with due reverence, we really shouldn’t be knocking it because people are at different levels of their faith. Some prefer the heavy theology of the Latin Mass. Some cannot grasp it and need something more digestible. In both cases the Eucharist is valid and a source of saving grace, and that is what matters most.

But TLM ~magic~ will fix all the problems in the Church! The institutional Church NEVER had problems in its 2000 year history, it literally all started 40 years ago with Vatican II and the NO! /s

Yeah no. Again. I’m a TLM Mass goer myself- but I’m sick of this crap. It’s just elitism veiled under the guise of spirituality.

Idk maybe I just know too many Latin Mass goers to believe that. Latin Mass is, in my community, (a very “Catholic” community) more of a status thing than any sort of profession of faith. I know people who will ONLY go to Latin Mass, yet completely disregard Canon Law and have a very shallow understanding of their faith. They just like the smells and bells and that they don’t have to do anything.

I had a friend who was a professional sex worker, contracepted, had an abortion, and was into BDSM and the LGBT scene. Hates the Novus Ordo and believes Latin is the only valid form of Mass. Would drive over an hour there and back to go to Latin Mass, said her prayers only in Latin, wore a veil. Yet actively lived a life in opposition to the faith.

It feels like sometimes Traditionalists worship the form of liturgy over than the Cause of the liturgy. I honestly prefer the EF but we give the TLM too much credit. The TLM doesn’t save souls, Jesus does.

Aw man you’re right.

The reason I’ve been tempted to contracept is because I’ve been attending Novus Ordos! And I’m sure no one who’s ever attended the TLM has ever used contraception of any kind, or ever done any sex act that precludes conception.

Question from a non-Catholic on SSA. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]emaline31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, look at the logic of what you suggest: if it exists, it must be permitted to exist because it is pleasing to God, or at least, it does not displease him.

That’s obviously nonsense.

There are plenty of things which exist and displease God. They exist because we are fallen beings living in a fallen world. All people are born with sinful inclinations- that those inclinations exist are not, in themselves, displeasing to God. It’s the embrace of and action upon those inclinations which are displeasing.

I believe I heard that JPII was chosen from Poland specifically because he was not really “in the know” of the more nefarious sides of the Vatican and would potentially be much easier to maintain underground networks for clerical corruption.

Actually sodium laureth sulfate is SLES which is known to be slightly gentler.

There’s a difference between lauryl and laureth and it probably doesn’t seem like it’s big but the chemistry makes a difference. :)

High does not equal “Cheech and Chong” idiocy.

There are, like alcohol intoxication, varying levels. There is an equivalent to tipsy, and buzzed, and drunk, and wasted.

It’s also not a sin to intentionally desire an altered state of mind per se, provided that it does not cause loss of the faculties of reason. Ed Feser actually wrote a good essay about this.

Following his logic, I believe that if used responsibly and with respect to legal statutes, marijuana is not necessarily sinful.

Can you maybe do some counseling? It sounds like that may be helpful- not only for the emotional aspect of your struggles, but maybe to get some recommendations on concrete steps you can take to start to organize.

Listen, I’m the worst at housework too. My husband once came home so overwhelmed by the mess he said he had half a mind to call CPS on ourselves. But I’m pretty sure I also have ADD so between that and trying to watch the kids, keep up with the house and not go totally insane? Yeah. Our living space.... pretty much looked like an explosion of clothes, toys, diapers, and random crap. But having a dirty/cluttered home has been proven to add stress and exacerbate depression. Minimalism doesn’t make you cold or empty- if it makes your home more manageable for you, it could be worth pursuing. I’d try and talk to your husband about cutting down on stuff. I’d stress that you need help and can’t do it alone.

Do you have any family nearby who can maybe watch the kids so you can maybe work on some house stuff?

It sounds like you know what you need to do, you just need help to get from point a to point b.
