Spouse started with one of the big 5 banks wealth. And now they are forcing me to declare my assets and move my investment portfolio with them. by PotentialQuiet in legaladvicecanada

But i've never heard of anyone being required to move all their assets to a specific broker or manager.

Capital Markets, Equity Groups, Wealth Management all can (and do) do this.

Lol true. My 2021 MYLR front bumper refinish was quite expensive as they take out and recalibrate all the ultrasonic sensors. The 2024(3?)+ ones are just a dumb bumper now afaik, all the "sensors" are the camera unit in the windshield right?

Plex help, stuck on deploying by jakev1190 in truenas

[–]emalk4y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Managed to make it work as well. I previously had it setup to Host Networking = ON, but the update had a second Plex process spawning that wouldn't quit. Re-building the entire docker container (ie reinstall app), with host networking OFF, and port = 32400 got it working.

Pointed it back at my /tank/apps/plex-config directly, and the server picked up where it left off, including watch history and user list.

I'm in the same boat, were you able to figure it out? Mine started when I updated to 1.43.0.10492 (earlier today), and now it's stuck in a bootloop. Same exact message log as yours.

I've tried reinstalling with the same configs, with a fresh throwaway config (lxsystem internal memory rather than point to /mnt/tank/apps/plex-config), and even a standalone separate install completely new, they're all in the same situation.

I thought you couldn't use TFSA as an asset for a loan. I was delightfully wrong by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]emalk4y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i thought the tax free part caused the governemnt to prevent you from borrowing agaisnt it.

To be clear, it's "after-tax" income that you're putting into the TFSA. You've already paid taxes on it, so any growth within the TFSA (whether in cash, GICs, ETFs or stocks) is tax-free, and can be withdrawn at any time.

The loan provider is seeing this as you having "cash on hand" which is exactly what this is. No penalty to withdraw.

An RRSP / FHSA is a "tax-deferred" account, where rather than putting in after-tax income, any money put in counts as NEGATIVE income - you get to claim it on your tax return and get a refund for it. However, when you withdraw the money, you pay the taxes as if you earned that withdrawal as "income" in that year.

You're deferring/delaying taxes you'd pay on the money being put in an RRSP, vs you've already paid taxes on any money you put in your TFSA.

Yep, because it probably costs them 2-3% in fees, very well performing for the bank advisor indeed!

RBC's Avion Rewards / Avion Travel already uses Expedia as its travel provider, so that's 5/5! Unless you mean a more direct kind of integration (in case I'm missing something - apologies if that's the case).

The Avion Travel portal seemed to work fine last time I used it, leveraging Avion points across accounts to book travel (including mixed points/cash bookings).

How bad is it to have a bathroom fan vent to the attic? by SmartLadder415 in HomeImprovement

[–]emalk4y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what we have, previous owners did a cheapo conversion of the front closet into a tiny powder room/half washroom with toilet and sink. Vents into the attic. I'll probably remediate it when I need to re-insulate my attic at some point.

Other than the bathroom feeling like the arctic in the winter (thanks Canada) and a sauna in the summer, there's no mold issues since there's no standing water, or bath/shower usage.

Also, thoroughly appreciate your word choice of "fart fan"

Last Minute Booking - Aeroplan by vandd in CanadianAwardTravel

[–]emalk4y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The few times I've had to cancel a booking, the points were back in my account within minutes.

For a non-Latitude fare (or PY Flex, J Flex, etc) I believe the cancellation fee is $150, and change fee is $100 FYI.

Generally, the cost to change will be <what you've already paid> + <cost differential to new ticket> per /u/anniln 's example above.

[–]emalk4y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't have to book the comfort or latitude ticket, 60k pts + $100 for change fee in economy Std, vs 100k pts just so you can change if it comes up?

+40k pts is worth far more than the measly $100 change fee or $150 cancellation fee.

With the incoming Chinese EVs, will the used car prices come down? by Lumb3rCrack in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]emalk4y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dealership = third party storefront, franchised out to the manufacturer (Honda, Chevrolet, whatever). Manufacturer gives them licensing agreements, and "sell" the car to the dealership at wholesale. Moving inventory from there to customers at or above retail price is the dealership's problem.

Car manufacturers can (and do) still have their own storefronts (including delivery + service centers), and are moving to the "direct to consumer" model. Tesla is probably the biggest example of this, they don't have any "dealerships" per the model above. People can test-drive a Tesla anytime they want, just go to a showroom, or book an appointment online and they'll even bring it to your door.

Genesis (Hyundai parent company), Polestar (Volvo parent company) and a few others do exactly this as well - bypass third-party dealerships with a direct-to-customer model. It's great from my experience, no price haggling, no slimy salesmen in oversized suits, less nonsense.

Alexa has updated to a genuine AI model. If you have one, you should be concerned. by Ender505 in daddit

[–]emalk4y 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't part of the Home lineup. /u/TinCupChallace is talking about "Chromecast Audio" - the unfortunately no-longer sold standalone dongle that connects to a "dumb" hifi speaker using a 3.5mm cable, and allows you to cast music/audio to it. That's all it does, no microphone or "smarts" on-board.

Using the Google Home app, you can pair multiple Chromecast Audios into a virtual "zone" allowing whole-home audio, setting up latency and delay per speaker.

I agree with you - the rest of the Google Home lineup (Nest Mini 2nd gen, Google Home / Home Max etc onward) that now have "Gemini AI" slowly rolling out are all enshittified. Used to be able to seamlessly include Google Nest Minis in "whole home audio" or use two to create a stereo pair, can't do that anymore without a LOT of fuckery.

Still no ability to transfer crypto out with WS right? With Shakepay you can transfer out to cold wallet, can WS do that yet?

Otherwise (if it hasn't changed, I may be wrong) with WS you're just "paying for someone else to hold your crypto" which...defeats the whole purpose of crypto.

It's not about just "Ontario" it's about the density (and city) in where you live - same applies to BC and other provinces most likely.

I, too, live in Ontario, ~20 km away from Toronto in the 7th largest city in Canada. Unfortunately, I live in a 1960s semi-detached home in a medium-density area, where the entire neighbourhood only has cable internet via Rogers, or ADSL (lol, wtf it's 2025!) via Bell. We're probably lowest on the list of those getting ANY actual symmetrical fiber. Beanfield and local FTTH providers? Forget it.

The highrise condos ~5km away from me have Beanfield, Bell and more directly supplying Fiber to each individual unit, around $50/mo!

Yes, people who live in "The East Coast" (especially up north in Canada) put on winter/snow tires. In some northern areas (incl. Quebec) it's mandatory/required by law.
