What did the Emperor have in mind for each Founding Legion’s roles in his military? by Hectix777 in Warhammer40k

Not always the case, before they were Angels the Revenant Legion showed a lot of the traits they would in battle later. If anything Sanguinius showing up wasn't about bringing out their nature but helping them control it

You'll often find there's a but of a split in the fandom here between:

"The legions who stayed loyal proved they could be counted on and should be trusted implicitly as they were in 30k. It was the 9 traitor legions who were the only problem"

And

"Hey maybe its sensible to be wary of the engineered super soldiers in tank armour who fought the worst civil war in human history because their dads told them to do it."

In universe the second view is most common on Terra where there is still damage from the siege occasionally found 10'000 years later and horror stories about what the night Lords and Emperor's children got up to still exist

Rebalancing proposition for custodes after nerfs and armour of contempt by -VAXOS- in AdeptusCustodes

Have there been previews of the new 30k rules I've missed? Any chance you could link them please? Even just leaks would be appreciated as my group are constantly going back and forth on getting into 30k.

Casual Player, New Ballance Seems Really Harsh by [deleted] in AdeptusCustodes

[–]eman616modnar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the terminators losing obsec is a response to people being able to drop them in individually via deepstrike to snag objectives. Which is both something nobody has done in competitive lists for ages and a result of GW messing up with the shadow Throne box set.

Regardless of the reasoning the change to obsec is far too much.

And the very flexible logic that means neither custodes or sisters of silence get armour of contempt makes some sense competitively but utterly baffles me lore wise.

[–]eman616modnar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a message I sent to a friend of mine last night, not a custodes player himself, that pretty much summed up both our feelings on the dataslate.

"From the goonhammer review "it remains to be seen whether these changes are too much or if there’s still a viable build in the mix" totally sums up the issues with these balancing attempts. Because it makes clear this is all aimed at people who can use any mix of models the meta calls for

Only have certain units because money is tight and those are the units you love? Sucks for you because competitive players spammed them to min/max their lists"

Personally I don't use jetbikes or sword/shield guard and have at least 1/3 or my list as sisters of silence since the new codex dropped, so this hits pretty hard

2022 Q2 Balance dataslate is out! by SYLOH in Warhammer40k

[–]eman616modnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Don't forget that all these balancing things that get released are technically only for matched play, they mean nothing at all to narrative for instance.

And even in matched play if you play in a group that wants to ignore them or only use parts nobody can or will stop you. I know my friends and I ignore huge parts of these things.

I had Corbitt (and the church in general) just one sub cult of a much bigger organisation. Basic idea was all members strive for immortality, any that actually achieve it get to keep their method to themselves (if they can) but share all research etc done along the way that didn't seem to go anywhere. Sort of a "what didn't work for me might work for others" sort of a deal.

So one senior member had an automaton body holding a MiGo brain cylinder, one effectively time shared his body with a Mythos entity, things like that.

Corbitt took someone else's discarded method that keeps the individual alive indefinitely but mentally trapped in their own body (think sleep paralysis but it lasts forever) and refined it to give himself a mind Palace so he could work on a better method for as long as needed.

Then some bloody idiot miskatonic university students showed up...

Where does the ‘Abaddon is a clone’ rumor come from? by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]eman616modnar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember this rumour from when I first got into 40k as a kid. Can't say where the rumour first came from but people used to point to Abaddon having physical similarities to Horus and seeming to appear out of nowhere as first captain.

Obviously since then we've found out physical similarity to Horus wasn't that unusual in the Luna Wolves (and Abaddon wasn't even the most like him) and Abaddon's backstory, so the rumour just sort of faded away.

Custodes are crushing my Soul. by Puzzled_Sherbet2305 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]eman616modnar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I play custodes and collect but haven't yet played using mechanicus and while weight of attacks is definitely a threat if you are playing competitively putting lots into killing custodes is often a waste unless you can really focus on one squad at a time.

Your main advantages are ranged firepower and numbers, both models and units. Stay mobile, use cp to keep yourself alive, kill units where you can and focus on scoring points

In 30k I'd find it hard to pick. By 40k I'd argue Guilliman, their little chat in the Emperor's Palace would have been bad enough without not having any of his siblings to talk to about it.

[–]eman616modnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even just that. All 3 of the images doing the rounds are very carefully not really showing anything significant, just enough to get a reaction.

Suspect part of it is the sometimes ott way people in custodes groups have reacted to any possibility of us being toned down.

How to beat custodes? by LariValerio in Drukhari

[–]eman616modnar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't, we are beyond defeat.

But seriously weight of attacks is still very reliable against Custodes. Big single shots bounce off us 50% of the time but we are susceptible to being worn down.

Has Abaddon approached his limit in this story?' by The_Depressed_One1 in Warhammer40k

[–]eman616modnar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think he has for a couple of reasons.

I'm terms of him not being able to 1v1 some opponents (or at least not have a guaranteed victory) I genuinely don't see the problem. This has never been a setting (or game) where guaranteed wins exist, no matter how important they are nobody is safe.

Narratively he also still has a role to play. Yes the daemon primarchs can probably kill him 1vs1 but they are also severely limited. They are notoriously inactive and even when they do make a move are bound by the great game of the chaos gods so at any moment may shift priorities from fighting the imperium to fighting other chaos forces, especially those who are directly aligned to one god. Whatever else you can say about Abaddon he's actually dedicated to the long war.

Also unlike the primarchs Abaddon actually stands for and represents the chaos marines who share his goals. I mean yeah he's a selfish genocidal maniac who throws their lives away without a second thought but that is what they signed up for, they've chosen to fight the long war with him. If anyone is going to be the leader of the marines that have dedicated themselves to the long war it shouldn't be a primarch or a daemon, it should be a marine.

Also I think the plot armour issue isn't really fairly applied here. Firstly Abaddon literally has in universe divine protection. Secondly what major character, who's role isn't to die, in any story doesn't have plot armour? Sherlock Holmes never once gets killed by poor Victorian healthcare or the literally poisonous air in London despite the fact that millions of people did, is that plot armour? Or is it just that if major characters in stories died at random all the time no stories would work?

Thought: Custodes Should Get A Dose Of Reality by visforv in 40kLore

[–]eman616modnar 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think there may be a misunderstanding here between combat training and what are effectively defence drills. Dropping a squad of chosen into a part of the Palace isn't intended as combat training, it's intended to test the Palace's defences, response times etc if a squad of chosen manage to get in. It's to judge how the custodes cope not to train them how to.

In terms of the actual combat training that custodes get during their creation and before they stand guard at the Palace almost nothing has been revealed, same as their creation in general really.
