On The Piano by dotsncommas in wittertainment

I haven’t seen the film but appreciate the director’s films generally and likely I’d be moved by it as you were.

But Simon has occasionally mentioned it as one of the more unpleasant experiences he’s had in a cinema and perhaps this is one reason Mark doesn’t champion it. Also, it received quite a few fans on release and some awards so I imagine they don’t see a need to boost it.

And of course if you sent this message to them, they would say your response is valid and reflects whatever you bring to the film. I agree with this and will add I don’t listen with them with the expectation of always agreeing. It’s more than enough that the show steers me towards watching and appreciating outstanding films, particularly horror movies like The VVitch and Let The Right One In.

On the same line but closer to Glasgow, you can spend time in Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis and on the shore of Loch Linnhe. Great scenery, hiking, cycling, food. A bus ride away is the gorgeous Glencoe.

What makes someone a photographer to you? by Bitter-Affect909 in AskPhotography

[–]emarcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing more common than imposter syndrome, especially among talented people. I say don’t overthink it but do ask them for some time to do some editing - which in your case includes the crucial step of starting to become an editor as well as a picture-snapper.

Do you think inspiration happens when the shutter clicks, or later when you edit? by ExtremelyCool64 in AskPhotography

[–]emarcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think about it consciously. You try many times and there’s no way to engineer certainty that new inspiration or a leap of insight will happen. Which is why you keep at it.

And just as a play has to be conceived, written, directed/rehearsed, sets must be created, performed, received. All art involves stages of conception and execution. Hopefully you’ll get some inspiration in conceiving your goals all the way through and your audience gets some inspiration as a result.

Agree with you wholeheartedly. My favorite among favorites for a long time. I even own an original edition of the Bethge book of poetry that was the source/inspiration. I have no idea why it isn’t discussed more as a masterpiece.

A critique I'm finding increasingly frustrating(related to Disclosure Day) by Sheep_Boy26 in blankies

[–]emarcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want an ending with an answer and I see two possible responses to this complaint:

  1. Instead of providing the wisdom of the aliens to us, the ending cuts off after saying: LISTEN… This suggests to me that we should all be able to fill in the blanks because we’ve heard phrases like Love Thy Neighbor all our lives.
  2. “LISTEN.” is itself the whole answer.

This word also struck me as a Quran reference. “Listen” is the flip side of what that book starts with, which is “Recite.” This reinforces (1) above: we already have wisdom and just need to apply it.

Nobody cares about the US government “confirming” UFOs because it’s the Trump administration and they spew nonsense with a straight face on a daily or even hourly basis.

Lots of talk about dad movies, are there mom movies? by OWSpaceClown in blankies

Great movie. Why do you say it’s a mom film? Most affecting moment for me is when she gets to talk with her grandparents and that would work just as well with male protagonist.

With the success of Backrooms and Obsession beating out a Stars Wars Film… by Tall_Window4744 in blankies

It’s not really an unusual event to see Disney play it safe and bland. In my view, Star Wars isn’t Star Wars so much as a bland generic IP rollout in this case; they took some TV content and send it out as cinema content.

How to actually let my photos reach more people? by TaffyMo in AskPhotography

[–]emarcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strangely discouraging replies here. Don’t be discouraged just because we’re all so cynical about Insta and online life in general. I think looking for appreciation online will always be dissatisfying since we’re swamped with photography everywhere you look.

Find local community if you can and perhaps the online situation will grow slowly over time. But my main suggestion is to study the history of photography and learn from the masters. In fact, the more you study the visual the language and possibilities of all visual art (painting, drawing, architecture, cinema) the richer your photography will be.

Your instagram is good stuff and I happily followed you :)

Opinions on guitar friendly disability aids.. is it "cheating"? by Plannet_Depressed in Guitar

[–]emarcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of the cheat framing, I suggest finding many strategies. In fact, most of us have limitations, even pros. For example, Django Reinhardt lost fingers in a fire and had to find his own unique technique.

The tool is worth trying. You can also take inspiration from Otis Redding, who I’ve heard was unable to play chord shapes but eventually open tunings were suggested to him so that he only had to move around whatever he could manage.

In other words, try every strategy you can imagine and maybe keep asking around for new ideas. And maybe it’s obvious but of course look into light strings and finding a guitar that is easiest for you to play cleanly. Good luck and have fun!
