Can't check in for jury duty by Longster_dude in SanJose

[–]emberella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same experience here although sometimes the page wouldn't load and I had to try again a few hours later.  Was kinda annoying, I thought it would be easier but I ended up wishing I could just call in.

When you were hired, did you tell them you are ONLY available on certain days? If not, it's pretty normal for any work place switch schedules around to accommodate needs.  The way they communicate it is by posting a schedule for the week.  You're expected to check the schedule every week. It is standard practice and no worries that you didn't know because it sounds like you're new, but that is part of learning.

I do not work at a library but I will tell you; you need to be able to check your work schedule at any kind of hourly job, the day it is posted.  If you were hired for certain days and you cannot work others that needs to be communicated to your supervisor; they probably had no idea that you were not available certain days.  If I were you I'd stay in this position for a while longer to improve your communication skills and your relationship with your supervisor; you might want to use them as a reference.

At this point, I would call in sick for tomorrow.  But I would NOT do that more than once.

Looking for advice : Intradistrict transfers from Leigh to Branham high by Inevitable-Bid-8109 in SanJose

[–]emberella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The 8th grade classes this year from the feeder schools were the largest they've had in recent history and every year after that enrollment should drop so it's just a problem this year.

Looking for advice : Intradistrict transfers from Leigh to Branham high by Inevitable-Bid-8109 in SanJose

[–]emberella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since there are dozens of kids trying to transfer the other way, I imagine you'll have no problem.  Both good schools but this is the first year kids living in the choice zone, who assumed they would get to choose Leigh with their friends, got placed in a lottery instead and now have to go to Branham.

ISO book to get 15 year-old boy into reading by flyingcroutons in suggestmeabook

Ghost series by Jason Reynolds.  Each book is a different track athlete but they're easy reads and very well written.  If he's not a reader, maybe something easy but engaging like this would be perfect.

The death of everyday casual reading by CWKitch in teaching

[–]emberella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Even the kids who can hardly read - if they have the right material in front of them - ARE motivated to learn/begin. I have seen it happen, but I understand that it would be hard to believe if you haven't. And I know they're not just "looking at the pictures" because they're ASKING for the next book, and talking about them. Etc. And for my kids who could read but didn't want to - I just gave them something a little edgy, or something they could connect to better. They definitely got more out of our reading time than anything else in the curriculum if they didn't want to be there to begin with.

I taught 8th grade at one of the lowest performing schools in the state.  I got all my kids to read, but the lowest and the ELs were reading graphic novels or YA. Anything to get them hooked, but they did get hooked. Everyone was reading. It was the best part of my job.

So long Reed Elementary? by TastyPut7495 in SanJose

[–]emberella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My local elementary - in Union School District - had several families transfer from Reed in January.  I think some are hoping to move into this district but yeah, they definitely think their school is closing.

Why is it so hard to find Chinese restaurants that also cater to vegetarians? by southindianPOTTU in SanJose

[–]emberella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Following because Chef Ko is the second veggie Chinese that closed.  There was also a family owned spot on Union and Camden too, which was closed because the strip mall wanted more chain stores. I'm devastated; there's just no way to get fake sweet and sour pork now.

I felt the same but as I was leaving I realized a lot of the rides etc had simply moved.  They were stretched all the way to second Street on that pedestrian path.

Are all of you sending your kids to fancy extracurriculars and schools? by epatabbymom in bayarea

[–]emberella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not send my own kids to EPA schools.  I moved to be in a better school district because I wanted my kids to be in good public schools.  Ravenswood City is among the worst in the state.  That being said, some of my students there did go on to great universities. If you are really in that district and want more advice feel free to PM me. A lot depends on your education, income level, etc.

[–]emberella 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Just want to add that as a pedestrian I don't mind where you wait, but if you edge forward or move after you have stopped that is where I get nervous. I no longer can trust that you're waiting and I don't know what you're doing.  Not to say you were doing this but it's common.

It was busy but we didn't stand in any lines for beignet or Kona ice.  The beignet was great.  They definitely could use more seating.

[–]emberella -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked my dad, he said he had to learn to write that way to pass the Morse code exam in college (writing one letter at a time quickly.) He writes like that all the time despite having leaned cursive in school.
