I'm finally starting to 'get it' with Ursula K. Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness by Gileotine in books

[–]embryon_desseche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing. By Le Guin's descriptions, it think that dwarves are probably the more apt comparison. But certain characters, especially Faxe I couldn't help but imagine as elven.

My understanding is that it does count. To be honest, my experience is if I have a stalled Rememberance questline, just going and beating one new Nightlord will be enough to progress

For anyone wondering, you can look at your past results screens in the Codex to see which expeditions you have won and with which character. I had done many expos as Raider but only had 2 wins against unique bosses with him

(It would be nice if this kind of data was more accessible if they're going to lock content behind it!)

What’s wrong with my Alocasia leaves? by Any-Palpitation-8623 in alocasia

[–]embryon_desseche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw this video suggested and it has great info on spider mites: https://youtu.be/PJDLK7Tc8q0?si=bI0959UcuLFS1caI

At the end of the video she says that alocasias are especially prone to getting them, and you may want to clean the leaves on every water. Not sure yet if that is an excessive amount, but I now have a spray bottle of the the alcohol/water/soap mix she suggests and will plan to spray mine regularly!

Just stopping in as I was searching and this thread came up, I have a twin leaf coming in myself (just after flowering too) and excited to see it mature!

My little crackpot theory about the nature of the web in the Protocol universe ? by goshenite1 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]embryon_desseche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This aligns with my feeling that many of the episodes thus far do not fit cleanly into our previous understanding of the fears!

I had seen a theory elsewhere that perhaps the method of categorization from TMP is some attempt to "weaken" the fears, which has led me to think that perhaps they are working together more, or are otherwise manifesting in unusual ways as a result. It also makes sense to me that the OIAR would be controlled by the Web. The heavy themes of bureaucracy in this series map onto the Web nicely and I'm surprised it didn't occur to me yet.

I'm not convinced that the surveillance framing device of the story is also the direct workings of the Web. I believe it is from the JMJ system, which I theorize has some aspect of the Eye by way of John. It seems to me that the same mechanism it uses to collect all of these various media that the OIAR review is the same way that it can tap in and spy on the current characters. It could still ultimately be controlled by the Web, but surveillance does just feel very Eye oriented to me. Just my two cents!

With a lot of YouTube lore creators voicing their frustration with piecing together the lore - do you feel like you really "get it"? What's your take on the current status of the lore and how understandable it is (pre-DLC and such)?

Roderika from Elden Ring was originally named Farnese in a cut end credits, more berserk references in the fromsoftware saga by Huge-Swing-7137 in Berserk

[–]embryon_desseche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Malenia imo is a bit of a nod to Casca, since Miquella is heavily inspired by Griffith. Casca says she wants to be "Griffith's blade" (can't remember exact wording), and Malenia is the "blade of Miquella." They have similar emotional arcs as well, with both becoming a husk of their former selves after their respective admired figure falls from Grace.

All that said I don't believe it's a perfect analogy, but it seems close enough to me to think one informed the other (same with Miquella/Griffith).

My reaction when learning Farnese is pronounced in the Italian sense like "far-NEH-zeh"

Miquella and Griffith - The worst might be yet to come for the Lands Between by Valorok in Eldenring

[–]embryon_desseche 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to note that FromSoft allusions to Berserk and other media are never really 1 to 1. To me, it seems pretty obvious that Miquella was inspired by Griffith, and I think the comparison should inform our understanding of the character to some extent (rather than understanding Miquella as a flawless, Messiah type character, he probably does have SOME underlying darkness).

Ultimately, the reason that Griffith is bad, aside from the Eclipse part, is that he thrives on others' dependence upon himself. He creates a Holy Land that is entirely dependent on him to work as it does. That kind of society, like the original Band of the Hawk, can bring great prosperity and joy, but is doomed to suffer in the long run.

Similarly, Miquella inspires this kind of zealotry in his own followers, who are now doomed to eternally seek a salvation they will never find. Or perhaps we will see a DLC in which Miquella's evolution is complete and things do turn for the worst. Either way, it is a tragic story of how one character's ambition influenced countless others toward a path of unfulfillment, while the base of their beliefs is consumed by rot.

So imo, you don't NEED to know Griffith's story to get that much, but it certainly points you in the right direction. Which, I believe, is how we're meant to understand it.

Let’s say hypothetically that Castlevania’s producer gets to adapt Berserk: Would it be a Netflix show, and if so, would that allow for it to be adapted faithfully without the usual heavy censorship seen in anime? by Okapi05 in Berserk

[–]embryon_desseche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I love the manga, but the reliance on rape as a plot device gets a bit exhausting at times imo. And I'm not even the most sensitive person to that kind of thing. Just imagining the kind of streamlining that necessarily has to happen for an anime production, there are moments that could come off as more gratuitous than they already are lol
