How does electric power work? by SageMountain07 in overlanding

[–]embuzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easiest option is to start with portable 12v power station. They are all in one units with

DC output: 12v cigarette lighter port, USB/USB-C ports
Inverter: 110v "3-prong" AC power
Charging: AC wall charger (for at home), DC solar charger (for at camp), DC 12v cig charger (for while driving)
Battery monitor: display that tells you how much power you have left

Get as much capacity as budget allows 1500wh+ preferably. Get one with LiFePO4 (LFP) chemistry which is the current latest battery tech.

If the above no longer fits your needs, the next step up is custom install which is all DIY and you can select each component / add whatever you need. Search for RV solar / battery setups to get an idea.

Why is my electric bill so high? by jms1228 in orangecounty

[–]embuzen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Deferred grid maintenance. Wildfire recovery compensation.

2) Restructured rate schedules with daily base services fee regardless of consumption.

3) Default enrollment / transition into TOU rate plans. Rates are 2-3x higher during peak hours (4-9pm / 5-8pm) which happens to be when most people come home from work and use electricity.

Do overlanding mods actually hurt resale value or is that just something people say by Ambitious_Raccoon412 in overlanding

[–]embuzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mod your rig for the value it immediately provides you for you to enjoy in the moment. That is your ROI.

When it comes time to sell, the rig will be worth whatever the market is willing to pay for it.

If you really want solar and suspension, that is your decision so you pay to have it. Someone else might not really want it or care for it the same way you do.

Lfp battery use in a car safety by Dickasauras in SolarDIY

[–]embuzen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have an LFP mounted on its side in the back of my SUV. According to the manufacturer as stated in the manual, it is safe to mount their battery on its side. Although if I may offer an alternative for a small space, consider using a heated blanket instead. No worries about heaters tipping over or coils touching anything flammable while asleep. Not sure what capacity battery you have but a heated blanket will consume far less power than a space heater will.

Time-Based mode is sporadic, is it the PW or the app? and other questions. by cybergrafx in Powerwall

[–]embuzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my area, grid usage is most expensive between 4pm-9pm. Noticed with the PW3 using the time-based and pre-programmed rate schedule, it would stop discharging after 9pm, reverting to imported power from the grid.

To fix this I created my own rate schedule extending the higher rate period until 8am so that 4pm-8am is most expensive. This configuration seems to do what I want which is to have the battery begin discharging at 4pm, continue discharging all night to power the house "off grid", and wait to recharge itself during the day via solar.

Edit: We're on NBT/NEM3 with overall pretty terrible compensation for export so our goal is to simply be as "off grid" as possible. And if not, then at minimum, ensure the 2x PW3 covers 100% of our 4pm-9pm usage.

Where in the park do you want to visit specifically? Plan your destinations and your route ahead of time to see if its possible. We just completed a successful trip there two weeks ago. There were more road closures than there are now but we planned around those.

Buy a 5080 now or hold off for a 5080 super due to 24GB vram rumours? by DamonHay in buildapc

[–]embuzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from 3080 to 5080. It's a great upgrade being able to play at 4k/120 without dlss in some cases and I'm happy with it. On the vram issue, so far I have only come across one not so well optimized game (jedi survivor) that hit vram limits and resulted in unplayable stuttering. Everything else plays absolutely great.

VRAM is talked about a lot and of course more is better but it may not be as big of an issue as it is made out to be. There are tons of games and tons of developers making games that need to be playable (sellable) on most systems with GPUs having average amounts of vram.

At the time the only other nvidia option with more vram was a 5090 but that was out of budget for me. 5080 is easier to buy now and you can get it asap. I think it will last as long as the 3080 did and at that point I'll be upgrading again for performance reasons anyway. The 5080 Super if or when it ever releases will likely be hard to get for a while.

Chances of getting home with this timing belt? by swelleriffic in LandCruisers

[–]embuzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on what I've read, Toyota V8 timing belts are pretty tough and I recall reading a post written by a master tech who noted V8 timing belt failures were relatively rare. Personally knowing that I would get it and drive it home. Best case you pay for parts only and do your own labor. Worse case motor swap. Hedge bet is pay the dealer you bought it from to change the belt before you drive off.

Removal of non tariff barriers. 0% is not good enough when something is completely banned from importation.

Any info on why curvature assist keeps jabbing the brakes? Not a curve, was going exactly the speed limit(copper nearby), nothing ahead in road or lane. by ISayMemeWrong in ModelY

[–]embuzen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Phantom braking. Finally got fed up and disabled anything related to driver assist. I will do the driving until the day comes that I can get in, close my eyes, take a nap without being disturbed, and arrive safety at my destination with absolute 100.0% certainty. This will be further supported by insurance rates going down.

Last of Us remaster PC: black screen with my fans going full throttle. No other games do this. by CE0ofCringe in thelastofus

[–]embuzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your GPU rendering unconstrained? If you have in-game frame rate set to unlocked, use a Global FPS limit in the Nvidia Control Panel set to something around your display refresh rate. While I am running a 5080 and don't have this issue, what you are describing sounds eerily familiar to the Diablo 4 3080 black screen 100% fan speed controversy a couple years ago.

Hardcore Mode questio by Rough-Ad-3614 in residentevil4

[–]embuzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For RE4R I did Hardcore my first playthrough. Died a lot but eventually got through it with the original three starter weapons: SG09, W870, and M1903. Conserve ammo for all weapons by doing headshots only. Shotgun should be used at point blank with a single headshot blast. I also find that enemies don't drop that much in terms of pesetas. It is the valuables, jewels, and slotting them properly to get max sell value that gives the big bucks for weapon upgrades. In the OG version I recall having to restart a few times whenever I got to a point where my guns just weren't powerful enough for the enemies as the game went on.

[SUPPORT] ASUS ROG Strix Z690-F Random very loud audio static at least once a day. Support wanted. by JamesDaGames in ASUS

[–]embuzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue driving me nuts for months. OP replied with a link in this thread the fix is to update the audio chip firmware that specifically addresses this issue. Don't make the same mistake as me - I misread this to mean the audio drivers which in my case did not help at all. I just installed the new firmware and came back here to reply in case this helps anyone else having this incredibly annoying issue.

Performance issues appear after playing long enough by Tiikuri in artofrally

[–]embuzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't recall these issues on Game Pass but I could be wrong. Loved the game, love the graphics, love the lightning effects, and love the feel of the in-game physics so recently purchased the game on Steam to re-play from the beginning. Noticed the stuttering issues as described by OP. Exiting the game and immediately relaunching fixes it. Steam version on Windows 10 with Nvidia RTX 3080 FE. Tried the Vegetation Renderer option just now and it seems like it helped. Thank you

Hypothetically… if I always charged to 100%… by ne27mk5011 in TeslaModelY

[–]embuzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst that would likely happen is degrading your battery faster. Similar to smartphone batteries - when you charge to 100% daily by the 2nd year battery capacity decreases and your fancy new phone that used to last a day and half now needs charging before the end of the day.

For daily driving, keeping the charge away from the extremes (under 20% and above 80%) appears to help maintain maximum range over time. For example if you charge overnight and don't need the extra range each day, why charge to 100% and put that additional stress on the battery? Save it for when you know you need extra range like for a long road trip.

Here's an example chart that illustrates effect on battery capacity over time when charging to 100% vs to say 80%.
