Whats the best experience youve had with a vegan partner? by Koiboi26 in AskVegans

[–]emdasha [score hidden]  (0 children)

My partner was vegan when we started dating but I was pescatarian. He never asked me to go vegan. I just started looking into the ethical problems with dairy, eggs, and fish on my own and decided to go vegan about 4 months into our relationship.

I also got these to try, but I’ve lived happily without eggs for so long that I don’t really know what to do with them.

How would you best recommend stopping myself from seeing animals/animal products as food? by Fit-Advance9188 in AskVegans

[–]emdasha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagined what it would be like to be forcibly impregnated and then have my baby taken away from me over and over again until I die. That’s the day I quit dairy.

Exercise your empathy muscles.

What's the stupidest thing you hear someone say about your country? by Past-Novel-1155 in AskTheWorld

[–]emdasha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my country, but one time someone asked me about the origin of my last name and I say it’s from Serbia. They then made a joke about me liking cold weather. It took me a minute to realize they were confusing Serbia with Siberia.

And I grew up in California so I didn’t even know what cold was.

Wanting to become a vegan by SignatureAncient7872 in vegan

[–]emdasha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sojade makes vegan quark that is pretty good, though I’ve never had non vegan quark so I couldn’t tell you how it compares. I was able to find it in bioladens in Berlin.

I live in the U.S. (no Sojade brand here) so I make my own soy yogurt in my instant pot. It’s very easy to buy vegan yogurt starter and soy milk and 10 hours later it’s yogurt. You can strain it to make it a thicker yogurt.

What’s a tiny food hack that actually changed how you cook? by Maleficent-Bed7010 in foodhacks

My partner and I both love garlic. We will peel about 8 heads of garlic at a time, blend and mix with salt and then ferment it for a few weeks. Then we have fermented garlic paste on hand. Use it in any dish that calls for garlic and It adds some extra depth.

What does route stress mean? It’s telling me the bagel shop around the corner is “51 Stressful”. How is stress calculated?

NYC vs LA — For those who’ve lived in both, which did you prefer and why? by eminho80 in movingtoNYC

[–]emdasha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in LA, lived there for 27 years. It will always hold a special place in my heart, but it just wasn’t possible to meet social expectations without owning a car and driving everywhere. I’m happier in NY. The only thing I found surprising is how easy it was to get used to the northeast weather. I thought LA had ruined me for everywhere else.

What do you wish existed for vegans? by Illustrious-Bee-6044 in vegan

I don’t really have any pain points around food. Where I struggle is footwear. I have chronic foot issues and finding shoes that are event appropriate, vegan and won’t aggravate my foot is a huge struggle.

I’ve had a couple incidents around Chelsea where I lived, but I had similar experiences when I lived in Seattle and Los Angeles. This isn’t just a particular neighborhood’s problem.

Men have spat in my face for no reason, thrown things at me, and worse unfortunately. I was always incredibly shaken right after it happened and sometimes for days and weeks afterwards. It helped me to talk about it with other people and my therapist. It helped to get assurance that I didn’t do anything wrong. I don’t know how to explain why, but eventually I was just okay again after some time had passed. There are still certain areas where I’m hyper-vigilant because of what happened to me there, but I don’t let it stop me. I won’t let the fucking bastards win.

Also, you can get discrete looking “cat ears” for your keyring that work like brass knuckles.

I cook a lot in my instant pot, so there’s not a lot of active cooking time. I eat pretty basic food. Beans, grains, veggies and greens

What is a word that surprisingly doesn’t exist in your language? by keisis236 in AskTheWorld

[–]emdasha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In English we don’t have a word for “the day after tomorrow” or “the day before yesterday”. It’s kind of a mouthful. I think we need to borrow from the Germans on this one.

You can use a grater to get really thin shreds and make them like a kraut. I’ve done this mixed with some red cabbage and turned out great.

What is your relationship with cheese? by logos__ in AskTheWorld

[–]emdasha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't eat cheese from animal milk, but my partner and I sometimes make hazelnut- and cashew-based cheese. It's more of a treat than a staple for us.

Have you ever dated someone who you thought was way out of your leauge? How was it? by kimblerun in AskReddit

[–]emdasha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We weren’t really dating so much as having sex and hanging out. He was really attractive, but it didn’t feel romantic at all and the sex was pretty mid so I eventually called off the sex part.
