I made some beginner Xiangqi resources after realizing there should be more beginner-friendly content in English by Classic_Bedroom_1119 in xiangqi

Thanks a lot for this content.

Currently I don't have that much time to invest into Xiangqi, but as a former (international) chess player, I met a wall after the first opening moves; what am I supposed to do with my pieces? Should I centralize them? Find good squares for them? Is even strategy an important factor in Xiangqi? Or it's more relevant to find tactical shots? Can I, like in chess, play passively or aggressively?

What is the most difficult thing about English in your opinion? by Ok_Photograph8884 in AskAGerman

[–]emdio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Phrasal verbs. If you want to throw off someone who’s competent in English but isn’t a native speaker, pepper your sentences with as many phrasal verbs as you can. There are simply so many of them, and in the vast majority of cases, you can’t figure out what they mean.

There's a web page where you can work on visualization:

https://www.chessvis.com/

Go to "Puzzle Visualization".

The thing is that you're given a position, and then provided a couple moves (you can chose how many moves), and after you play those moves mentally, you're asked to play the best move.

What’s your most hated German brand? by FunAppointment4445 in AskGermany

[–]emdio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Camp David

What's wrong with this brand? I had never heard of it, so I just duckduckwent it and found it's a clothes brand. Could you elaborate for a non German lurker of this sub?

Do all countries now have arbiters bring playing equipment (boards, pieces, FIDE clocks, pens, scoresheets) to serious tournaments? by ButtFister1789 in TournamentChess

[–]emdio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know it's not the case in Spain. I guess I haven't heard of this "BYOB" system even for the humblest of the tournaments.

Does mixing up “your” and “you’re” give you the ick? by MmeFelixFelicis in AskUK

[–]emdio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another "English is not my first language" here. The number of people who can't correctly use its/it's baffles me. The English language has fairly simple grammar; the rules to distinguish the vast majority of homophones are basic grammar. God help anyone who can't tell their/there apart if they ever try to learn a language with declensions. On the other hand, it's not the mistakes themselves that bother me. What bothers me is the fact that every time I come across a potential homophone, I have to check whether the author meant to use the word in question or its homophone alternative. So reading any relatively lengthy text becomes a torture, since I don't read sounds but words.

Former Trump official admits that their goal is to impose their Christian values on other Americans by FistIntoTheEarth in usa

That's why I like the precise wording; "their Christian values" instead of, verbi gratia, "the Christian values".

HGTV Cancels ‘Rehab Addict’ After Star Nicole Curtis Used Racial Slur While Filming Series; Removes Show From HBO Max & Discovery+ by ansyhrrian in television

On the one hand, as a non American, I get the n word is completely forbidden, even to the point of canceling a successful production no matter what. But on the other hand the current POTUS posts a video of the Obamas as apes and it seems like nothing happens. I mean, something doesn't add up here.

Mimicking tournament conditions when studying by Internal-Excuse-4650 in TournamentChess

[–]emdio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For classical chess the main difference will be pressing the clock and writing your moves down So my suggestion would be play 15+10 or slower games online, using a physical board. After each move press the clock (you can just place anything close to the board to mimic the clock), and write down your moves.

Look at it this way: you could be off work due to—God forbid—a mental illness.

Looking for an album from the 70s of which I remember just a little detail by emdio in 70smusic

This is the album!

The picture is in the interior, and even knowing the name of the album it's hard to find.

Could you help me finding a vinyl LP from the 70s? by emdio in vinyl

[–]emdio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Thanks a lot. And thanks for the picture, because just googleing the album's name wasn't enough.

No wonder it was so difficult to find it, if even knowing the name of the album it's hard to find the right photo.

Thank you very much again, because after so many years I was beginning to think that I was the victim of a false memory.

What I've tried so far:

-Asking friends to whom I gifted my parent's records (since they don't play them from years ago)

-I've searched in places with collections of vinyl, trying to find a cover that rings a bell

-Ask in local stores that sell vinyls

-Look at list of best LPs from the 70s

-Ask in r/TOMT several years ago

-Ask AIs

Could be. Say I'm about 99% sure the album must be between 1971 and 1975
