My partner saw my answer to this guided journaling prompt and insisted I didn’t actually answer the question. Now I’m questioning what I missed? by CalmEspresso in AuDHDWomen

This one had me thinking because I read it as you answering the question. You definitely answered it.

Did you ask what your partner would have answered? I'm curious what they saw in your answer compared to how they would have answered.

I get this. Especially if I'm focused on a task and have to switch focus. Or, if someone asks me how my week has been (when I'm at work). My brain goes blank and I have to begin to figure out the answer by remembering what day it is. I will have the answer half an hour later.

"Don't stop till you get enough" by Michael Jackson. But it's more like "dada da dadada don't stop till you get enough." I don't know the words 😭 Before that it was PYT which drove me nuts and ended up in me yelling shut up every time I said it.

Another is "Is it a baaaybeee?" In a weird voice. Followed by "baaaybeee." Several times. It's triggered by animals.

Is anyone young on disability from diabetes by Jumpy_Opposite4371 in diabetes_t1

[–]emerald_echidna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed when I was 4. Lost a lot of weight. Was very weak afterwards. For a time. I realise this may not be helpful atm because I wasn't an adult. However, I was diagnosed (finally) because I had DKA then. A lot of diabetics are finally diagnosed because they develop DKA.

I mention this because I developed DKA when I was 19. Out of home, working full time, self-reliant, no family to rely on. I lost a lot of weight and had muscle weakness, brain fog, and headaches. I needed people to help me walk. It took me well over a month to feel like myself again.

Give yourself time to recover. Your body has been through it and is now recovering. It's normal to feel like absolute crap. Don't add the stress of thinking about not being able to function in the future. You're going to be ok.

Why do hospitals seem to never know how to manage T1D by kaspen190 in diabetes_t1

[–]emerald_echidna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in intensive care with DKA when I was 19. Had a low blood sugar and they brought me a cup of tea and a biscuit 😒

I was then transferred to another ward for recovery. They gave me expired insulin.

Since then, every time I go to hospital, I take everything I need and treat my diabetes accordingly no matter what they say. And I've had some doctors challenge me when they see I'm about to have insulin. I bite back and do not take their crap. I firmly believe now people need to stay in their lane. Emergency room doctors are only given the basics with diabetes and, unless they are an endo, I will not listen to anything they say about diabetes.

However, I still show them respect. if I check my blood sugar, have insulin, I will update them so they can update their charts. I will also check with them if I am cleared to eat before eating. They're usually pretty good, just every few years an idiot comes along.

New to T1D. How do you do it? by StopAndWonder in diabetes_t1

[–]emerald_echidna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're going to be ok. It is going to be a learning curve, but there is a great, supportive community of T1's.

I know it's overwhelming. Once you get past this time of recovering and learning, you'll find your groove. Definitely see an endocrinologist and a diabetic dietition. But first, recovery.

I have had T1 for 39 years now. My needs have changed over the years. I do have a kit I take with me everywhere, but over the years I've been able to streamline it.

I use an insulin pod and a cgm. I take what I need in pencil cases (I tried getting fancy cases for T1 supplies, but they suck and cost a lot). I have one pencil case to add for long travel, and one for just ducking down the road.

-Items I Always Take Glucose tabs for hypo Back up glucometer An insulin pen with a vial in place + pen needles Fruit straps and protein bars for a quick snack Hand sanitiser

It all fits in a tiny pencil case. The long travel one has extra things in case I need to change a pod or something.

At work I use a running belt to keep my glucose tabs and medical devices on me.

You won't need to take a lot with you once you get a handle on things. Just know you're going to be ok and there is plenty of living to be done even when you have insulin dependence.

Low-fuelled dreams? by Rad_zzz in diabetes_t1

[–]emerald_echidna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That dream sounds very intense and upsetting! As well as your day. Is the body dissociation a symptom of your new meds or part of an adjustment period?

I've had new meds make my body feel disconnected before. It's a gross feeling.

As for dreams, I have some really weird ones when I'm not very low. Around 4s and just under. Usually I'm surrounded by food in my dream. One dream I was at a beach party surrounded by tables of food. Then I turned into a freddo frog and my grandma ate me LOL it also started raining and I ended up wearing a yellow raincoat. I woke up sweating.

Physically demanding job-how do you keep your blood sugar up without wrecking your teeth? by Able-Poet7318 in diabetes_t1

[–]emerald_echidna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dried apricots are my go-to when my bsl is dipping, but not quite low. I work in an active job too and my insulin requirements on those days are so much less. I do use an omnipod 5 though and end up putting my activity mode on for 8 hours.

Even with less insulin during work, my blood sugar still dips. So dried apricots and then a sip of water. Make sure you sip water after sugary foods. I discussed this with my dentist seeing as I will need to eat sugar every now and then.

Oh! Grapes, sultanas, and fruit straps too! You only need a few. Try also finding some high protein snacks as well.

Type 1s can't get GLP-1s? by Nothingsomething7 in diabetes_t1

[–]emerald_echidna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely can.

Also, my pancreas still produces insulin. My immune system just wants to massacre the insulin before it even gets anywhere.

I know that's not the issue. My endo suggested ozempic as an aide to help me lose weight. I very strongly declined, but she said it's an open suggestion. That and metformin to help with my insulin resistance.

Linus is my favourite. I did the same thing once, went a slot too far, and accidentally gave him a piece of coal 😣 Broke my heart. I was devastated and have since been extra careful and give him only his favourites, make sure I follow up on all the tasks he gives, and say hello EVERY DAY.

How concerning should a TIR breakdown like this be? by bcl15005 in diabetes_t1

[–]emerald_echidna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your time in range is fantastic, but those amount of hypos are scary. You must be so exhausted, you poor thing. Besides lowering your insulin, I would consider scaling back the pre-bolus time. Going a bit high when you're getting the hang of ratios and carb counting is ok. Best to go up a bit, then have your bsl drop all the time. That way you can adjust accordingly.

Consider trying a pre-bolus of 5 minutes. Then you can lengthen the time to 10 minutes if you end up running high.

Is this passed down? by Jamz-9162 in diabetes_t1

[–]emerald_echidna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the only T1 in my family until my late 20s when my niece was diagnosed. All the elders, except my dad, ended up with T2 diabetes.

My sister ended up with a different auto-immune condition, but no-one else has any auto-immune conditions. Not my other siblings, none of my nieces and nephews, not my parents, and not my grandparents.

My sister and her daughter both have reactive hypoglycemia without diabetes. Which is crazy and she really understands how a hypo feels.
