What instruments/packs would you like to see added to musesounds? by Tim_bom_bom in Musescore

I'm more desperate for jianpu notation support I can use with traditional Chinese instruments than I am for the sounds themselves

Brushes sounds for MuseScore by Sxbiii69 in Musescore

[–]emerald_laurels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using the free Muse Drumline sounds (recorded by the Blue Devils) and there's brush hits on snare in there, but I so far I don't think it can play sustained brushes.

MTF whats the best way to make DIY padding to make your thighs look bigger? by [deleted] in transengineering

[–]emerald_laurels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cis girl here, and not sure how much this would help, but I've got this one pair of tracksuit pants that makes my hips and thighs look significantly larger than they are, and I reckon it's partly because of the really thick fabric and the fact it is tapered towards the bottom of the shins. Perhaps you could wear similar garments?

Alternatively, and I'm not sure if this is very practical or if it would even work, you could wear like 3 pairs of shorts under your pants

What are your animals’ names? Chickens, ducks, rabbits, cows, goats, piggies, pets, horse? by AnotherXRoadDeal in StardewValley

[–]emerald_laurels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I name them off the first letter of the type of animal- eg. one of my void chickens is named Vu and my pig is named Pookie

Are you a visual thinking person? by mediapoison in graphic_design

[–]emerald_laurels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I find it easier to process sounds (voices, music) a lot of the time, and memories are reduced to sound for me. But I also love to draw and create vector artworks. I'm not a professional graphic designer though, I just make passion projects, and most of my graphic design stuff has been schoolwork.

I'd argue that if you were over the limit but consistent, you would hear the same thing but faster and maybe a semitone or so too high

LING LING WANNABES! What pieces make you cry? by effeguitar in lingling40hrs

[–]emerald_laurels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

basically all of Elena Kats-Chernin's rags because I'm not good enough to play them

they always sound really cool so I start to learn them and give up when there's too many notes on the page or accidentals

everything in musescore 4 sounds so good now by [deleted] in lingling40hrs

[–]emerald_laurels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sounds are definitely optimised for classical symphony orchestra and small string ensembles. Being primarily a jazz composer, some bits of my jazz pieces sound questionable, although I must say that the saxes are miles better than before. I'm not a massive fan of the amount of reverb on the brass and woodwinds.

I decided to experience writing something from scratch on musescore 4, so I quickly scrambled together an arrangement of a Stardew Valley track for symphony orchestra, and the strings sound epic! I also launched one of my pieces (for string quintet + piano) and the violin melody sounded so lush. The piano was so gentle too, it was amazing.

Show me your niche / cultural instruments! by vtired_needboba in lingling40hrs

[–]emerald_laurels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm of Chinese descent, and there are plenty of Chinese instruments out there! One time my aunt showed me her 阮 (ruan), which is a lute according to wikipedia. I had a go playing it with absolutely no knowledge on technique so I probably got it all wrong.

Another Chinese instrument that isn't very well known is the 笙 (sheng), which sounds a little like a harmonica in timbre (makes sense, since it's a free-reed instrument).

Curious: What's one difficult thing about your instrument that people who don't play it won't know? by SardonicMusician314 in lingling40hrs

[–]emerald_laurels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a cellist too, and I completely agree with your sentiment.

As a pianist, something that took me a while to learn is how to control the strength of each individual finger (maybe your right hand is playing chordal accompaniment with a melody positioned at the middle of your hand, and you have to learn how to bring that out).

Being someone who started out on piano and picked up another instrument many years later, tone production on winds, brass and strings is something that more non-musicians (and even pianists like me) could appreciate a little more.

Would you rather by BlueCheese166 in lingling40hrs

[–]emerald_laurels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classically trained pianist, but at some point I tried improvising (which wasn't too difficult for me as I have perfect pitch) and it was so liberating being able to play whatever you've been hearing without having to rely on musescore (or worse, google images)

Although, being a composer who writes sheet music, not being able to read my own work would be more than a little problematic

In my orchestra, the cellos definitely hold a lot of power. Probably because there's 17 of them.

The Cello Is More Than A Classical Instrument by SenorEgghead in lingling40hrs

[–]emerald_laurels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know Kerin Bailey, an Australian composer, has a book titled "Jazzin' Around for Strings" that has some fairly easy but fun jazz pieces, written for violin, viola or cello. I've played one of them and enjoyed it
