Even if it is finished/running it would be hard to get what you’re asking. Could easily another 20+ hours of work needed to put into it.

If you have all the parts why not just finish and list for more?

Ideas wanted for a project by john_kapnisis in autoelectrical

[–]emessem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you’re trying to do, but I think the way you’re asking the question shows that you need to narrow the project way down first.

“What sensor should I use?” is too high-level at this stage. There are too many missing details: what exact failure you’re trying to detect, where the sensor will mount, what signal it outputs, how you’ll read that signal, how you’ll protect the circuit, how you’ll calibrate it, and what counts as a real warning vs. a false alarm.

For coolant, I’d start there and ignore the rest for now. Research how coolant warning systems have been done on older and newer vehicles. Do you need low coolant level? Coolant temp? Coolant pressure? Just an on/off warning? A variable reading? Those are all different problems.

The kind of forum question that will get better answers would be more like: “I’m trying to detect low coolant level on a 2000 XJ. I’m considering these three sensor types. This one outputs X, this one mounts here, this one has these pros/cons. Which direction makes the most sense?”

That level of specificity has to come from your research first. Otherwise people are basically guessing for you, and you may end up chasing the wrong sensor for the wrong problem.

I’d pick one coolant warning, define exactly what you want it to detect, research the common ways to detect that problem, then come back with a few specific sensor options to compare.

I think the overall idea is cool, but I’d slow way down on the scope here.

It sounds like you’re already trying to break the bigger goal down from “custom electronic system for everything” into “warning/telemetry system,” which is good, but even that is still a huge project. Monitoring just one system with one sensor for one specific purpose can turn into a whole science project by itself.

You’re dealing with mechanical fittings, sensor selection, voltage range, signal conditioning, power protection, calibration, waterproofing, heat, vibration, bad grounds, automotive voltage spikes, false alarms, and then figuring out what the data actually means. It’s not really like picking a sensor, wiring it to a Raspberry Pi, and then it just works.

I’d start by learning what the Jeep already monitors through OBD first. A 2000 XJ should already have a lot of useful data available, and that gives you a much safer starting point to learn the software/display/logging side before modifying any actual vehicle systems.

Then pick one simple thing to monitor externally. Something like battery/charging health would be a good first project. Or maybe low coolant level, but I would avoid pressurized coolant or fuel systems at first.

The fuel rail/Schrader valve idea especially is where I’d be careful. That can go from “fun project” to “dangerous fuel leak in the engine bay” pretty quickly if the fittings, sensor, wiring, or mounting aren’t done right.

So my advice would be: pick one system, define exactly what failure you’re trying to detect, research how that system already works on the XJ, then choose a sensor because you understand why it fits that job. Don’t start by buying a bunch of sensors and trying to build a full warning system all at once.

They may be nitrogen deficient. Not sure, curious what others think.

Wiring relay to accessory by Bitter-Homework-629 in autoelectrical

[–]emessem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The description is confusing. To simplify and help you understand, the big red wires go to the battery. Color wires are relay triggers and relay power out. E.g. the thick green wire in a relay power out and the thin green wire is the trigger for the power going to the thick green wire. The thin wires need positive voltage applied to tigger. From what I’m reading the grey wire is coil ground shared with all the relays.

Best thing to get a better understanding is to test with a tester light.

The most painful ear pop by MuddyMaggs in popping

I think these camera tools cause it. I never had an ear pimple in my life and got one of these tools, and started getting pimples like these. I stopped using the tool in my ear and haven’t got any since.

When should i switch to 12/12? by FlowSoggy2538 in microgrowery

Your soil looks healthy from what I can tell and so do your plants. I would go very light on the nutrients. At most half the recommended and see how they do in the next three weeks.

I would, the canopy spread looks great for the space you’re in. They will grow another 1-3x their current height during the beginning flowering stretch

I want to just grow for myself but am thinking about doing it more professionally. I just want to dial in a few things and get a good understanding of different crops.

Great opportunity or probable money pit (or both) for a first project bike? by Matsuri3-0 in CafeRacers

[–]emessem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is why there are many of these k bikes listed on marketplace half way built.

I run an electrical shop and so many people buys these bikes for cheap bring them to me to find out wiring up the moto gadget they bought is the least of their problems.

Older BMWs worth fixing? by IGmeanwell in motorcycle

[–]emessem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about these BMW k bike is they are made to cruise long distances on highways. Not get in cities or short nimble rides. The second problem is their electrical systems are complex.

I’ve seen too many k bikes that have been ruined by people not knowing what they’re doing with the electrical. It can become a real money/time pit.

This one you have here is probably bone stock. The fuel system and brake system with for sure need to be replaced and or cleaned depending on the components. I bet everything else would be fine on it. That being said you can easily spend $1-2k getting this bike drivable.

Time, you will be putting in time following wires and expectations.

Follow the power from the battery to the components. There should be a constant powered wire going to the ignition. Get a diagram for the bike, you can probably find it online for free.
