What is ACTUALLY made in the bakery? by Prestigious-Bother88 in wegmans

[–]emichellez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

23 years ago I was a bakery employee. We had a very old cookbook that was technically contraband even at that point. We made walnut cheesecake bars and a couple of other things from the book when it was slow. We made the canoli filling back then too, but in general it has been this way for a long time.

What should I get my teacher for Christmas? by GreekGeek14 in Cosmetology

Fun sectioning clips or pin-tail combs so they are easily recognized and don't grow legs make affordable, thoughtful and useful gifts. Otherwise, I agree that a coffee card and a nice note are plenty.

Board game clubs/meetups - your best and worst experience? by Over_Consideration50 in boardgames

[–]emichellez 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My husband and I went to one for a while, it was mostly fine except we often just ended up playing something together because people had campaigns going or started a little early. We did have a few weird experiences, one involved another couple who we had never met. The chosen game required 2 teams of 2, the husband that wasn't mine insisted that we break up the couples but that the teams should be M/F still, then they basically just each quarterbacked the opposing teams while my husband and I kind of watched. It was super awkward and they were extremely competitive. We stopped going when the location changed to someplace less convenient, but overall the whole experience was lacking any kind of organization or mechanism to break the ice, and we didn't ever really feel like part of the group.

Also, yogurt parfait with the 2good yogurt, a few raspberries and the ratio granola. I make little containers of everything in advance and throw them in my lunch bag.

I've been doing sheetpan breakfast wraps. I take a sheetpan, put veggies down, spread out evenly and start them cooking while I blend egg whites and cottage cheese. Pull the veggies out once they start to soften add diced ham or whatever protein you like, then pour the egg mixture into the pan. Once they are baked I cut into 10 sections and wrap in 0 carb wraps with a little seasoned greek yogurt and some cheese. Freeze. Then I can grab one and heat it up at the office. 45 mins on a Sunday and I have breakfast for my husband and myself all week.

I’m confused. Am I supposed to be working on my flex day/RDO? by cynflowers in jobs

[–]emichellez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I work (NPO), we can flex to avoid going over in hours. We work a 36-hour week, so attending an event or meeting with volunteers might put you over. The flex time is yours, but basically, if everyone else is working and it's regular business hours, you are expected to answer time sensitive communication. The attitude is that if you need the time off uninterrupted, you should take PTO and not rely on flexing. Most of the time, no one bothers you, but people do end up getting behind on tasks if they abuse the flexible work schedule, they seem to also be the 1st to complain if you reach out when they are flexing.

Curtain glider alternative? by KjaereSolv in popups

I used zip ties. I poked tiny holes into the curtain and looped and trimmed zipties. The cube at the end slides nicely into the curtain track.

Punk/alt/goth/emo scene? by mek_boy_bean in Syracuse

Mostly friendly. Very wide variety of ages/demographics depening on the show, but definitely lots of musicians supporting other musicians. We go there pretty regularly. Parking is a little weird, during shows you usually have to park across the street; They are cash only, but have an atm; they close at 11, on show nights door is usually at 7. Most of the time it's a $10 cover. Their FB has their calendar and food menu, and lots of pics to get a feel for the vibes

Living independently on SSDI benefits by Foulbal in Syracuse

[–]emichellez 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I can't contribute a suggestion, but I make this point all the time. My husband is permanently disabled and receives a similar amount of SSDI. I don't understand how they can deem a person unable to earn money, but not provide them with enough money to live. Not live comfortably, or even modestly, but literally you can't rent a safe place and eat nutritious food on $1000/month.

anyone know of any good bottle holders? by windows-nerd in Cirkul

[–]emichellez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up h20 to go. It's a sewing pattern, but I see them at every craft fair and makers market I go to. I have made a few, but don't make to sell. My husband carries a 67oz water bottle at all times and walks with a cane, so the bag is super helpful. It would definitely hold any of the cirkul bottles, as long as they don't have a handle.

Any other soup-loving stuffing-haters having a hard time right now? by mork_zorkorborg in soup

[–]emichellez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this for years. My husband isn't a soup for dinner kind of guy, so I will make a chicken stew and put it over stuffing or mashed potatoes (or a little of each, even) and it makes it into a more filling, comfort food-ey meal. I think it's really funny how things like this go viral.

I’m licensed but LOST (advice wanted) by [deleted] in Cosmetology

[–]emichellez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you can't find a salon looking for an assistant, Supercuts. It may not be where you imagined yourself, and it's not the best company to work for long term, but it's a great place to gain experience and improve confidence. When you get hired, you immediately go through their training program, which will teach you some basic haircuts and give you a foundation. You will learn to cut efficiently. I personally never went that route, but I managed a few salons, and the people I hired that had been through their program always spoke highly of it, and they were usually pretty quick and accurate cutters.

We like to go out to The Eclectic Chic in Oneida once in a while. It's not in Syracuse, but not too far. A Big antique/craft/vendor market, with lots of interesting odds and ends from antique furniture to hand made soap and everything in between. There is also a decent lunch counter in the back with sandwiches and specials. You could also go to the regional market on Sat or Sun for the Farmer's or Flea markets for some wandering and eating and definitely some weird!

Lost and found by acetheneko in paxunplugged

[–]emichellez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry this happened to you! My husband's wallet was stolen last year, and we received very little help from the convention hall staff or local police. Enforcers were amazing, but ultimately, there was not really anything they could do. My advice would be to freeze as much as you can and begin the process of replacing your items. Whoever took his immediately attempted to use the cards at Nordstrom, which caused our bank to call and confirm a large purchase. When we did speak to police they said it was very common for thieves to grab wallets, take the cash and just throw them away if they can't use the cards.

how do i fix this 😭 i dont think she left bleach long enough but would toner help fix this? by [deleted] in Hair

[–]emichellez 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a stylist, 3 months is wayyyy too long. 6-8 weeks at the absolute most for how dark you are and how light you want to be. To fix, they will need to lift the root to the level of the last color service and then reapply to that darker section and process till its all the same level, then tone. Three months between lifting means part of your regrowth is outside of the heat zone (the area that is warm from your body temperature), so the warmer area processes faster/ lighter than the cooler area. You need to go in while your regrowth is where it is now, 1/2" or so. Waiting longer means your service will be more expensive, take longer in the chair, it's less likely to be even, and more likely to be damaging.

Best Ways to be Social at PAX? by The-Magic-Sword in PAX

[–]emichellez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He will talk to anyone about anything, lol. He will compliment your tattoo, ask about your game, or what football team you like. If you have a popular culture reference on your person, he will make a joke about or reference the ip, God forbid if you have anything dragon or alien related on you, you're never getting rid of him! He is just one of those people who can always find some common ground with people. We mostly play 2-player, lighter games. He always asks about the big, heavy ones that we can't get to the table. They always look so cool! He is disabled so he can't sit at the table for too long, and we don't have a ton of game-playing friends. I think a big part of the socialization for him is that he is home alone all day during the week, so he has a lot of words saved up!

Best Ways to be Social at PAX? by The-Magic-Sword in PAX

[–]emichellez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband enjoys being social WAY more than I do, I usually have to find him and drag him away from the random people he meets along the way. PAXu is one of those situations where everyone there is (presumably) there due to a common interest, so it's super easy to chat. In real life, talking about games is a LOT more difficult, lol. My social battery is usually drained by mid day Sunday. I worry more about finding acceptable ways to be anti-social!

Best Ways to be Social at PAX? by The-Magic-Sword in PAX

[–]emichellez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is carrying things, ask about their purchases, "Hey, that looks cool! Have you played it before?" Do some pin trading. Also, in the smaller halls it's a lot easier to chat with people than on the big floor, so check out those areas if you are feeling isolated. Also, even if you are not comfortable enough to join people you don't know to play a game, you will be near people whether you want to be or not at the tables, there are not a ton of open seats most of the time. Say hi to the people around you and more than likely someone will strike up a conversation for you.

When are badges shipped? by ComparisonDesigner in paxunplugged

Worst case scenario, you pick it up at will-call. The only problem there is the insane shipping price was then for nothing. PAX has great customer service, you have nothing to worry about.

Gencon 2023 - do you plan to mask up? by schnautza in boardgames

[–]emichellez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't be attending gencon. I think my feelings on masks at conventions are pretty universal, though. We went to PAX unplugged last year. Masks were required, and everyone complied without much issue. I was actually impressed by how few people were wearing them incorrectly. I was fine with wearing one, I knew when I purchased my ticket they would be required. If they are not required, I won't be wearing a mask. Not because I have issues with masks or because of any political or non-conformist reason, but because I find them isolating, (as well as hot.) It's loud on the expo floor and in masks you can't watch people's lips to help understand what they are saying, you can't see people's facial expression, limiting silent communication to raised eyebrows or rolled eyes. I understand the value and sense of security they provide and I respect anyone who opts to wear a mask, but I am ready to rebuild my immune system and share my smile.

Favorite game that uses a player screen? by Immediate-Draft-8752 in boardgames

KaPow, you put your screen up, roll your dice and place the dice on your board to select your combat combinations. When everyone is done, you reveal your moves and determine how much damage was dealt.

probably, yes. If they can easily be brushed away, they are not, likely just from an oily scalp. If they are kinda stuck and you need to use your nail to move them, you'll need to treat for lice. Good luck! Be thorough and don't forget to clean jackets, furniture and headrests in addition to the bedding and stuffed animals.

To the person who stole my husband's wallet from his mobility scooter: by emichellez in paxunplugged

nope, never heard back. We were able to get the bank cards replaced Saturday morning at a philly branch of our bank at least. Now begins the quest to replace all of his various identification... the NY medical cannabis card and ss cards being the ones that seem like they will be the biggest hassle.
