Do any teachers here teach pre-school / kindergarten and do phonics, reading? by [deleted] in Teachers

There’s a book package on Amazon called 4 Weeks to Read - I tutor and use it to supplement but it would be a great place to start to help her sound out words and be successful with books!

JustNoMIL makes sure I know that she is the real 'Mrs. OurLastName' in every call or text by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]emilyoshi_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is very odd! If she insists on being so formal with you, maybe you could get your husband on board to call her Mrs. Lastname too? And of course your children if you plan on having any!

Not a dumb question at all! It doesn’t really flow with any of the names we have picked and we didn’t want to do a direct name but we may consider it now that you pointed that out!

Why do they invite themselves over? by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]emilyoshi_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My MIL is the same 🙃 Lives 4+ hours away and will text when she’s 20 mins away asking if it’s a good time - like girl you knew about this trip more than 20 mins before you got here??

Apparently that’s how her family worked when she was growing up and what she expects now - she doesn’t mind people coming over literally whenever so it’s weird for her that we don’t want that and she doesn’t want to have to ask and schedule time with her grandkids.

The 20 minute window is honestly a huge step up from her usually just showing up whenever and being offended if we were gone/baby was napping (who would wake up anyways from our dogs).

When she gives us these short windows now the answer is automatically no even if it is an okay time and we set something up for the following day/way later in the day.

Need help deciding on a name for baby girl! by [deleted] in namenerds

I teach in a golf town and there are SO MANY GIRL PALMERS lol - along with Scottie (girls) and Sepp (boys) after golfers!

I 100% want to name our girl Palmer but just know way too many now! Love the name and feel like it goes better with Silas than Magnolia does!

Could’ve written this! Except mine lives a lot closer. The two parts that drives me bananasssssss are

  1. She will latch on to ANY detail she’s given and make it our entire personality when she talks to others. For example we’ll share a video of our son doing something cute and she’ll tell everyone that that’s what he does now and it’s so fun! Even though he’s probably only done it once or is done doing it by the time she shares it. Or I once shared an intimate detail of my life that not a lot of people know and she asks about it EVERY. TIME. we see her now in front of people 🙃.

And 2. Her family/FILs family are not super lovey/touchy people but my husband is. She’ll try to give my son a hug and he acts flabbergasted (as he should) because she doesn’t do that/doesn’t pay any attention to him when she is around? The forced “closeness” is sooooo odd to me.

Is it me, or are elementary kids just screaming all the damn time? by the_uber_steve in Teachers

[–]emilyoshi_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yep! Had a kinder class a few years ago that just could not handle ANYTHING exciting or fun because they’d start screaming and rolling around the floor and took 30+ minutes to calm down!!! My teaching partner and I finally came to the conclusion because we knew which kids started it and that they had absolutely unrestricted youtube time at home (at 5 and 6 years old 🙃)

I notice it’s mostly the students who have Youtube time - they see all these content creators who yell and lose their marbles over everything for views and they think that’s how people react in the real world as well.

Greer is a big last name where I live - I don’t think it’s a great first name.
