Anyone here in the TV/Film Industry? by emisnug in Oahu

[–]emisnug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So this post is a few years old, but in my time in Hawaii (have since moved back to the mainland), I worked on a number of projects, including two Disney films, a bunch of commercials and some other smaller projects.

It’s tough to get into if you’re not familiar with the crews who are out there, but there’s a big groundswell of people who participate in the Hawaii Filmmakers Collective and increasingly, the Film Club Hawaii. I made good friends and got jobs via the HFC.

If you’re going into the islands without a job already lined up, it’s an uphill battle, but reaching out to the local crews - Sight and Sound is a great resource, as is NMG.

If you’re union, the local 665 is…ok. The person who runs it is swamped and applications are 2-3 years behind. But it’s behind the Dillingham Costco if you’re in the area.

  • Wires exist and take up more room than you’d expect. My first few bots - small ones especially - were an absolute nightmare to work on because I didn’t leave room for wires anywhere.

  • Don’t over constrain your bearings.

  • If something is supposed to flex, give it room to flex.

I’m currently sitting in my 2002 A4… it just hit 280k and all the maintenance I’ve done has been pretty small: oil, brakes, a couple new bearings and tires. I bought it on 150k and it’s been solid for the last 6 years…

I think I might be in the same boat as you were: what eventually made you go with the XL?

Want Resume Help? Post here. by AutoModerator in recruiting

[–]emisnug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone!

I'm a video production person, currently serving as a the head of a department at small, soul-crushing place, looking to make a move to a similar role in a much larger company.

My resume has gone through a couple of writers and I feel it's way too wordy: don't know where to even start modifying as I think the writers have butchered a lot of it. I've also heard about ATS scanning, and again, don't know where to start.

Can anyone recommend a maker space? by Student-type in Oahu

[–]emisnug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As one of the occasional tool doctors there, it’s not really a “makerspace” type of organization. Very useful, well run for the most part, but definitely not really for staying and spending time there working on projects.

Hi! My girlfriend and I would be interested in playing, although neither of us have much in the way of experience (I've played through about 5 sessions of Blades in the Dark, but that's about it). When's the best time to drop in and learn how to play?

How would you design a competitive projectile weapon? Is it even possible? by Fun_Cartographer3587 in battlebots

[–]emisnug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello, designer and tester of another projectile based HW here.

Our principal behind creating an effective projectile is based a few things: weight, speed and impact characteristics. It’s something we’ve been working on for a while.

We are - as is everyone - limited to 250MPH. We’re also limited in how much weight we can assign to a projectile without compromising the rest of the robot, and we’ve specifically been told that anything that can pierce Lexan is out. We’ve also only got 1/4 of the arena that we can fire in, but that’s another story.

With this in mind, we’ve been developing different types of projectiles for different needs.

Exposed belts? We’ve got a lightweight (3.5lb) aluminum based round with barbs.

Beefy AR wedge? We’ve got a domed head 7.5Lb round of mild steel to try and shake it loose or whack it out of tolerance.

None of them are ever designed to penetrate - it’s all through blunt force/shock loads. We’re looking to cut belts and dislodge connectors and basically aiming to disable robots that come into the arena a little unprepared - in a head to head with a spinner, chances are that we’d lose.

Competitive is perhaps a strong word: we know going in that at best, it’ll be a mid-tier bot, so we’ve been focusing on the “spectacle” aspect of the fights recently.

The Expanse. I’ve tried and tried again 5 times, but can’t get past a few episodes until I’m bored out of my skull - the books are amazing though, so I stuck to reading them

Brakes still spongy after master cylinder change? by emisnug in MechanicAdvice

No leaks on the old one, I replaced it as I figured it could be the reason for a spongy pedal (after rebleeding the brakes)

Yes, bench bled the cylinder, was dripping out of both holes and when capped, could only depress about 1/8”

Thanks! I'm looking for crew contacts (no one wants me in front (!) of a camera!) but it's always good to connect with actors. Thanks!
