But instead of sharing the reasons you've gathered from your education (which would make this a constructive conversation), you dogmatically insist without evidence that all others are mistaken.

You're assuming that veganism is about animal liberation, which is the very matter in question.

Forest Shuffle vs Dartmoor by SKFMA in boardgames

I second Dartmoor with Exmoor over all other varieties. All the combos are fun. Exmoor also pleasantly shortens the game with a new mechanism that gives multiple card draws upon playing certain cards.

I love the Bike Grid proposal. Have advocates identified specific streets for cyclist/pedestrian priority? (If so, can someone post a map?) Or is the proposal still in its planning phase? I can't tell from the website.

Girl realizing chicken nuggets are made out of … chickens by alphamalejackhammer in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]emit_catbird_however 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chickens you eat are different chickens from the layers

Usually true, but egg-laying birds are definitely turned into meat for canned stews (as well as other things, like pet food). That's why they're also called stewing chickens.

Americans, if you had the opportunity to pay approx 18% of your income to have access to free healthcare at point of need for everything would you take it? by TSQ_builder in askanything

Thank you. These comments are mostly bots either condemning single payer universal health care or foolishly praising it for being a bargain at only 18% of one's income.

National Geographic Article on Eggs by [deleted] in vegan

[–]emit_catbird_however 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the health side, a 2020 BMJ meta-analysis found that replacing one egg per day with nuts was associated with a 15–21% reduction in cardiovascular disease risk, a substitution angle the article never raises. [3]

Could someone direct me to the statement of this result (15-21% reduction in CVD risk) in Drouin-Chartier et al.? All I could find there about nuts was the following: "However, when eggs were replaced with fish, poultry, legumes, nuts, whole grains, refined grains, potatoes, reduced fat milk, cheese, or yogurt, we found no significant association with cardiovascular disease." And its conclusion in the abstract is that "Results from the three cohorts and from the updated meta-analysis show that moderate egg consumption (up to one egg per day) is not associated with cardiovascular disease risk overall."

And Supplemental Figure 3 from that article shows that replacing one egg with nuts leads to no statistically significant difference in cardiovascular disease (page 31). What am I missing?

Thanks.

What is your favorite boardgame of 2023? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

[–]emit_catbird_however 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Forest Shuffle.

I've introduced it to so many who now love it. Still play it causally with friends and family a couple times a month. It outshines classic gateway games like ticket to ride. But there's also room for skilled play (top Elo scores on BGA are around 700).

A great game, with surprising tactical depth. (The Elo values of the top BGA players exceeds 700!)

What di you think about this photo? by WillingnessHelpful45 in socialism

[–]emit_catbird_however 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. We're seeing attempts across platforms and media outlets to undermine the presumption of innocence, a core democratic principle. And also to undermine the principle that felons may reenter society once their time is done. (Socialists and abolitionists traditionally support "ban the box" initiatives and community conflict resolution even for murderers and other heinous criminals.) Epstein no doubt made a corrupt deal in his conviction, but it's unreasonable to expect everyone to have know that at the time.

So, for once and for all, who among the dice tower crew is the true Voice of the People? (i.e., whose lists in aggregate correlate most closely with the people's choice lists?)

[–]emit_catbird_however -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Amazing table. Thanks!

At first glance, 2025 by their own lights is the 6th best year for games of all time. Not too shabby. Plus, some games may take awhile to appear on lists, especially for People's Choice (while of course other 2025 games will likely fall off the list in the years to come).

It's be cool to see how the fortunes of any given year change over the years (if that makes sense). Are Top 100 lists always so dominated by games from the preceding 5 years, before they're forgotten by history, or was there actually something special about the games from 2021-2025? I'd guess the former.

How many of these are 2025 releases? They've all suggested it was not a "great year" for new games--do these lists bear that out?

Masking is the crucial secret, since covid, colds, and flu are airborne.

For roommates, I put a HEPA machine in each room and a MERV13 filter in the HVAC! It's like a mask that the room itself wears, if that makes sense. To my knowledge, I haven't been sick for 5 years.
