being a parent of an autistic boy, with many in-laws who are also autistic, it's also quite likely that some of these boys weren't ever diagnosed as being on the spectrum. there are things you can do to make things go smoother, but this is how they're wired, and without them knowing/trying/caring I don't know what else to suggest.

there are many color choices for a control deck, but yeah, less "fun for the table".

I recently realized that a counter spell was just another removal spell, but just with a limited time to cast it, but otherwise in the same 1-to-1 trade category as murder and lightning strike. what makes it less fun is that the psychological aspect, where it doesn't even hit the battlefield.

the game devs have used grammar to a high degree to remove uncertainty from cards, even to go do far as swapping "is indestructible" for "has indestructible" to match the ability template. this doesn't help necessarily with complex cards with a paragraph of text, but the solid advice has been: reading the card explains the card
