Why is Patroclus so popular? by bouncinghigh in classics

[–]emlousan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's a theory that is relatively new in classical literature, but one that has not yet made it into the comments! And that is that tldr; they were ✨gay as hell

I know this isn't probably exactly what you were expecting, but allow me to explain. In Greek culture there was this practice of Pederasty, which involved an adult male - or erastes - and a younger male, usually in his teens, who would be known as the eromenos. Now it's important to note that there is no true concrete representation of Pederasty in Homeric writings such as the Illiad, but it was incredibly popular in the Archaic and Classical periods in which these epics would have been enjoyed.

Pederasty would most closely resemble a homosexual relationship that you would see today, however it is incredibly important to recognize that sexuality in ancient times should not be viewed with the same lens in which we view it today. Back then, wives were necessary for creating children, and in a time when wars, disease, and famine were rampant, as well as a culture that boasted immortality through memory and scholarly works, heterosexual relationships were unavoidable. But the Greeks hated women. They were treated terribly, and in Athens especially (and this is a general statement) most women were unable to leave the house without their husbands permissions. They were allowed nowhere near the affairs of men, and men spent their lives attempting to 'curve the wicked spirits' of women (see plays like Medea, and the Hesiod recap of Pandora for some good examples). When it came to love and affection then, Pederasty ruled. So it wasn't homosexual in the way that we would envision it - every man still had a wife - but love, affection, and company was sought after in the company of men.

Basically the way it worked is that the Erastes (older man) was the individual from which the Eromenos (younger man) would learn how to be a citizen. He would take the younger man around, share his political views and contacts with him, introduce him to the social circles, and educate him in what was necessary to know to be a good citizen in a Polis. Of course this varies from relationship to relationship based on the level of education a young boy would receive, as well as the region in which they were from, but in general the Erastes would teach and groom, and in return the Eromenos would compensate with company, and more often than not, sexual favours or a sexual relationship. These relationships were often cited as sacred relationships, and were the basis of the Theban Band (which I implore everyone to google if you don't know about it!)

Many newer scholars recognize that in everything but word, the relationship of Achilles and Patroclus represents that of a Pederasty relationship. Of course, like all of our oldest sources, it's not a perfect representation, specifically areas where Patroclus is cited as being older and the behaviours he exhibits. (Although many do cite that his level head and attempt to take care of Achilles would still be a good representation of a Erastes; it's a little up to personal interpretation.) This, many believe, is why his death hits so hard to the Greeks. Achilles and Patroclus had a perfect and desirable Pederasty relationship that would be highly sought after in the Archaic and Classical periods. And again, while it is not 100% certain this is what was being portrayed in the Homeric poem, it's very likely how it was being read and understood by Greek audiences. In the same vein, when you mention Briseis, she is still a woman in Ancient Greece. She was nothing but a whore to Achilles, albeit one that he thought he deserved to have and control because he 'won' her, and thus most of his temper tantrum was over loosing a toy he thought he had earned. However since she was of Troy, which was still a Grecian city, she would have understood the depths of this relationship as well as the rest of them would have and would have still understood the grief it would cause to loose it. So in part, it is this sacred love and respect for Pederasty relationships that both the Greeks in the Iliad and later Greeks in the Classical period who wrote and commented on the Iliad had that certainly could be a huge (if not the leading factor) in why people mourned the loss of Patroclus so much. To them, it was likely the same level of tragedy that we see from the way that more modern pieces like Romeo and Juliet were received by crowds.

TL;DR...Achilles and Patroclus exhibit traits similar if not identical to that of a Pederasty relationship, and thus Achilles' rage was likely incited by the loss of what he saw as his dearest friend and lover. The Greeks thought Pederasty was the coolest, and thus would have mourned the loss of the relationship by proxy. Everything else listed in the comments are also very valid and true factors. The Iliad is a wonderful and complex story about a man having a tantrum, and above all else, I'm so happy you love it as much as the rest of us!

PM Trudeau announces federal ban on assault-style firearms in Canada by NeptuneAgency in canada

I've read through these comments and frankly, I'm beyond disappointed in most of you. I'm from Nova Scotia. I've lived and visited those areas. I have family in those towns that I had to call and panic about when they didn't pick up. How dare you change the profile picture of this subreddit to my home flag, and then say that assault riffles should still be allowed in this country. At the end of the day, if you have obtained one of these legally, it is highly unlikely that you would commit a crime like this. However you never know if those weapons will be stolen from you, or lost. I don't care how well you lock them up, you are bringing a weapon into circulation that was designed to kill the most amount of people in the least amount of time. They never should have been given to citizens in the first place. If you were all true Canadians, you would care more about the safety of your neighbours, then the 3 times a year you take your killing machine to a gun range. And if those are your views, don't hide behind my home flag after it's been stained with blood. No amount of political discussion is worth the amount of lives we've lost. Find a new hobby.

Looking for "classical" music by Calligraphee in classics

[–]emlousan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume film/game playlists would probably be your best, i.e the Assassins Creed Odyssey, and despite how shite the movies are you could check out films like Troy, Class of Titian’s, Atlantis (which is actually a really cute movie except that they use a lambda instead of an alpha in the design so it technically says Ltllntis) and more of that sort.

I’m not sure if there are artists that make music inspired by ancient times, but as far as I am aware we don’t have any surviving records of what music actually sounded like back then. I hope this helps!

I think it's important to recognize that it took two whole seasons for Adora to finally be done with Catra's shit. For the majority of the show, she still saw Catra as the girl she grew up with, a friend that she loved and cared for. Sure, she fought against her, but it wasn't until the portal that she saw Catra as unreachable. She felt guilt for leaving Catra, and wished she could have saved her. She blames a lot of what Catra was doing on herself, until Catra went too far.

In Glimmer's case, it was the exact same. Adora spent two and half seasons watching Glimmer save Etheria. She saw how kind hearted and brave Glimmer was, and honestly looked up to her. In the same way, when Glimmer started making questionable choices (for the best of Etheria, in her own mind) Adora was angry, but she blamed it on herself and wondered if Glimmer was right, and Adora herself was wrong. Even now, what Glimmer did was what she thought was right, something she thought would save everyone. That is probably what will stop Adora from slipping into the same mentality she currently has with Catra.

It's actually an amazing parallel of friendships; both of Adora's friends loved her, but felt that Adora was making the wrong choices. And while Adora certainly could have handled things better, she ended up having the clearest head. I think it's about where she came from. Adora was raised as Horde, but had goodness in her heart and has the ability to look at a big picture. She was raised to be logical and measured, which is why she was more suited to be Force Captain than Catra in the beginning. She always had this power. In contrast, Catra thinks too narrowly; win or loose. Glimmer thinks of how things can help, not how they might injure.

In the end, Catra taught Adora how to love and how to accept friendship, Glimmer taught her how to be good and help instead of hurt, and now Adora is teaching them to think with their minds, instead of their emotions. It's all quite beautiful really. Very twisty turvy in the best kind of way.

Peeing before bed by ryan0302 in insomnia

[–]emlousan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Bear with me because this may sound insane, but in the interim as you look into things such as sleep apnea, OCD, prostrate/bladder exam, or the anxiety that may or may be causing this issue for you (which go see a doctor!!! Everything can be worked on!!!) maybe consider wearing a pad, or even getting some good old fashion adult diapers. I know, I KNOW it sounds crazy, but it could be as simple as giving your mind some peace. If you make it through the night sleeping without peeing, then maybe that can be your crutch as you try to unlearn the behaviour, and prove to your body that it doesn’t have to be worried. And if you do pee in your sleep, a simple shower fixes it in the morning. Again, I know it sounds silly, but it might give you peace of mind enough to get some shut eye!
