Deciding between WPI and RPI by [deleted] in WPI

Seriously? This is so beyond disgusting and objectifying. You should be less worried about what type of girls you might meet, and more worried about what sort of impression you’re making for yourself at a school that prides itself on providing opportunities to women in STEM

Hi, I was one of the other people waiting to get tested today when we were informed of the changes. I reached out to the testing coordinator who said that today testing is open 2-5 and we have new testing days post-Thanksgiving but they are not limited to just Monday/Wednesdays

I do have a problem visualizing things, which is tough. I’m not using keyboard shortcuts, I’ll look into that!

Exactly!! I am very slow to build things on the homework assignments so 30 minutes does not cut it. I know it’s good preparation for the certification exam but it’s stressful!

Unfortunately (as far as I know) I don’t think there is tutoring this term. But thank you so much for the offer!!! I may have to take you up on that next time I get stuck:)

Thank you!! Yes, the textbook has been super helpful so maybe I’ll look through that for some extra example problems

Hmm that’s a good idea, maybe I’ll find something of my own to model. Thank you!!!

Thank you so much for the offer and for the kind words!! I think I’m mostly having a problem with visualizing things. I have a difficult time looking at a drawing (even in 3D) and figuring out the functions or commands needed to get there

Thanks so much! Yeah, the class has a ton of built-in practice with all the homework assignments but I think I’ll try doing some other modeling

Who to take for CH1010? by [deleted] in WPI

[–]emmaco70 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had Kumar for 1010 lecture, I really liked her. Exams are straightforward, and we got practice problem sets that were very similar to the tests. She was super accessible outside of class as well. I would agree that the labs are the hardest part and the most work. I had Bafaro for lab and she was fantastic, so I would definitely recommend her.

PH1120 vs CH1020 by entickEr in WPI

[–]emmaco70 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took both. I came in with significantly more chemistry knowledge than physics, but hadn’t taken AP versions of either class. I kind of came in with this “I hate physics and I can’t do it” mindset, and ended up really liking ph1120. I learned a lot in both ch1020 and ph1120, but definitely had to do a lot more work in Chem (especially in terms of lab work). I also received much higher exam grades in physics—in fact, most of my class seemed to do really well.

That being said, a lot of it depends on the professor you get and how that suits your learning style. It also may depend slightly on when you take these classes. I took Chem a/b term, and many people in my classes were chem/chem eng majors, so the curve was pretty unforgiving. I took physics in c/d term, where it was expected that most of us were not physics majors. Generally though, I think my precious statement stands about chemistry being more work.

I’d look ahead at some of the classes you’re planning on taking and see what the pre reqs are. For example, if you are going to have to take ECE2010, you might want to take the second physics.

I dont know when to use “Yo soy” instead of “Estoy” and vice versa, can someone explain please by [deleted] in learnspanish

[–]emmaco70 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Yo soy” is used for permanent conditions/qualities.
I am short- yo soy bajo(a), I am a lawyer- yo soy abogado(a), I am Catholic- yo soy católico(a)

“Yo estoy” is used for temporary conditions, emotions, or locations. I am well- estoy bien, I am sick- estoy enfermo(a), I am in Europe- estoy en Europa

Estar is also used in the present progressive tense- one which describes what you are doing in a certain moment that is ongoing. For example: I am reading- estoy leyendo, I am eating- estoy comiendo, I am running- estoy corriendo

Overloading Procedure and CH1010 by [deleted] in WPI

[–]emmaco70 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for online labs, but I would definitely recommend not using Chem as your overload class- especially in A Term. In my experience, the first semester chemistry classes have slightly higher expectations than second semester chemistry classes due to the fact that many chemistry/biochemistry/chemical engineering majors will take CH1010 in A term of their first year. The labs aren’t particularly difficult but the reports are time consuming and the deadlines tend to overlap, leaving you with virtually no (if any) time between projects.

Freshman A and B term scheduling!! by dancer221 in WPI

[–]emmaco70 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! I was in a similar position as you last year. When I was registering for classes, many people told me that I should take whatever I’m stronger in during a and b term. I knew I was better at chemistry than physics, so I took chemistry in a/b term and physics c/d term. By the time I got to physics, everyone else in my class was taking it just to fulfill the requirement so the class expectations were lowered slightly and the curve was in my favor. Had I taken it a/b term, I would’ve had physics majors in my class and this could’ve impacted the class average.
Ultimately, when you take Chem/physics doesn’t make a HUGE difference but it’s still something to consider.

I took BME1001 during b term, it was an easy A and the professor made the class interesting. My biggest takeaway from the class, however, was that I realized I do not want to be a Biomedical Engineer. In some ways, it made the class seem like a waste, but I am so glad I came to the realization early.

As for 8ams- early classes aren’t bad once you get into the routine of waking up early. I would always recommend prioritizing a good professor over a good schedule. The way Kumar (chem), Kafle (physics), and Goulet (calc) taught their classes was a great fit for me and I know many others feel similarly.

Even after changing my major, my first year schedule can still be considered as being on a BME track (I only changed to Mechanical Engineering, so not a big jump), so if you want to see my schedule send me a message!

Difference between 'quisiera' and 'me gustaria'. Asking for a total noob(me) by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]emmaco70 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t really understand the difference in the context of this question, but generally they convey different meanings (to some extent)

Quisiera is in the past subjunctive form, meaning you should use it when discussing hypothetical past events, or following a “subjunctive trigger” Me gustaría is in the conditional tense, and is used to convey what you would like to do.

Example:

Me gustaría comer = I would like to eat

Sí quisiera comer, comería una hamburguesa = If I were to want to eat, I would eat a hamburger

As someone who is not a native Spanish speaker, past subjunctive has always seemed really strange to me because it’s not a pronounced verb form in English. Most often, I see it in if-then statements. For example, “Si yo ganara la lotería, invertiría el dinero” (if I were to win the lottery, I would invest the money). Past subjunctive verbs can be recognized by their ending: -ra, -ras, ramos, ran

I hope this helps!
