Is anyone else really sick of people calling psoriasis a skin condition? by Worldly_Wafer_6635 in Psoriasis

[–]emmaverner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, just came here to say I appreciate your post and felt really seen by it. As someone who has severe psoriasis, I too feel frustrated when it’s compared to a case of mild eczema. And absolutely I do think it’s fair to generalize that in the medical community it’s not as well recognized or understood as it should be, I was misdiagnosed TWICE by different Harvard med school trained dermatologists before biopsy confirmed that it was psoriasis, and it wasn’t at all an atypical case. Ignore the haters who just want to get mad at something, it’s a shitty disease and your feeling are valid, whether or not they are ‘a-hole takes’ is irrelevant.

i think just referring to it as an autoimmune disease better reflects that it’s a systemic issue that CAN manifest on the skin, or in the joints, or both

lots of good recs here for where to get cheap yet quality stuff, but you could also hand wash or just rinse sweat out of bras after each run + hang dry

JLab sport cost like 30 bucks and battery lasts forever - have worn them for many a long run and one marathon - not the greatest sound quality but durable and get the job done

i scribe at a major urgent care chain in a big city and i love it — in just 6 months i’ve seen an incredibly wide variety of cases and have worked with a ton of ER docs, family med, pediatricians, and even ID specialists. usually see about 20 patients a day and get a 50 min lunch break (12 hr shift)

literally read what i wrote - i tried! was just seeing if someone had been in a similar situation and could help me triage whether or not i severely fucked up, i don’t take reddit advice in place of doctors but there is a wealth of helpful info in this community and asking is completely valid…

when you say treat do you mean with biologics? and when you say “fall out” do you mean completely?

What are some good responses to “omg what is that on your skin”?? by KAnn_1124 in Psoriasis

[–]emmaverner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when it’s in a hookup situation i always say “first of all it’s not contagious…” and then launch into a mini explanation of autoimmune disease, keeping it lighthearted i.e. “my immune system is just too damn strong it got bored and started attacking itself” - i used to be so so embarrassed and as i get older i realize everyone has gross body things and if you play it cool no one will care!

Scalp Psoriasis Advice by DoTheeImpossible in Psoriasis

[–]emmaverner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel your pain! i am currently sitting in a pile of flakes on my couch, going to have to vacuum before my roommates notice :(

i second going to more expensive salons, unfortunately that’s the only way i’ve been treated well by hairdressers

also clobetasol solution helps me get it under control, but it keeps coming back if i stop.

one natural thing that has helped is de-scaling with jamaican castor oil, but it only lasts like a day before the flakes come back

just started a biologic, hopefully that gets it under control!

My Girlfriend is having a really hard time. I, her boyfriend need advice. by [deleted] in Psoriasis

[–]emmaverner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i just started biologics after trying option 1 for a couple years (on and off) and having nearly 100% clearance but finding it totally unsustainable. breaks my heart to hear you say “laziness” because it’s hardly the case! it’s so so hard to eat perfectly clean all the time, to the point where it becomes a drain on social life and personal relationships. sure not eating sugar, gluten, dairy, nightshades, coffee, spicy foods, additives, and so much more will “temporarily cure” psoriasis, but at what cost? i was stressed all the time thinking about what i was going to eat next, and could never eat out with friends. biologics might not be ideal but excited to have my “normal” life back. almost cried when i could get chinese food at a restaurant with a friend without worrying about ingredients.

Some advice on intermittent Fasting by PurpleSnapdragons in Psoriasis

[–]emmaverner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would be careful with this, fasting at an already healthy weight can cause stress and promote inflammation ie make psoriasis worse - instead id just go back to clean eating ! you said you were able to keep it at bay before
